Forsyth took over as the starter in the spring of 2020 and hasn't looked back. He makes the protection calls up front for a group that allowed 11 sacks over seven games, which ranked 29th nationally. Considering Oregon's entire line was new starters, tha t's an impressive debut albeit in a shortened season. However, there is room for improvement for the group. The Ducks didn't face three of the top five teams in the Pac-12 in sacks last season and their run protection is an area of emphasis this offseaso n. "We always say five men, one mind," Forsyth said. "You got to be on the same page. Whether I'm making the call the tackle has got to know why is he making that call versus what front. Everybody's got to know the holistic picture of everything if we wa nt to be five minds as one. I think that's a big thing we're trying to emphasize this spring, five guys got to play as one. The quarterback position has been a revolving door for the Roadrunners in recent years, and it remains under scrutiny after Harris and Adkins split first-team snaps during UTSA's spring game. Harris, the faster and more athletic option behind center, wil l likely have the inside track to the starting job as the more experienced option and one of the Roadrunners' emotional leaders. But Adkins is expected to push Harris through fall camp, potentially offering a more accurate passing option.Injuries have been the story of Harris' career. The former Clemens star missed 2017 and 2018 because of ACL tears, sat out the final eight games of 2019 due to a shoulder injury and pushed through nagging knee problems last year. He was productive in his opportun ities, throwing for 1,630 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions while running for 528 yards and nine scores, but questions of whether he was UTSA's best option lingered. - Express-News

UCF football continues to find talent in the transfer portal, this time getting a commitment from Kennesaw State linebacker Bryson Armstrong Thursday. Armstrong, who was the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, becomes the eighth pl ayer to join the Knights program since the hiring of Gus Malzahn back in February. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder registered 314 career tackles along with 40 tackles for loss and 18.5 sacks in 45 appearances for the Owls. That included 30 tackles, 5.5 tackle s for loss and 1.5 sacks in four games this spring as part of a truncated season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Armstrong was a three-time, first-team All-Big South selection from 2017-19, earning National Freshman of the Year honors in 2017. The way Truesdell went about his decision shouldn't come as a surprise, though. He isn't a flashy player, and he has always been a quieter presence on Auburn's defense. Still, his return was a significant one for the Tigers during an offseason that saw a coaching change and the departure of several key players on that side of the ball. "I think it's great that he came back," first-year defensive line coach Nick Eason said this spring. "…Having him here and having his leadership, he's kind of the silen t leader. He's not a vocal guy but he just shows up and works. That's one of the things that I admire about him." Truesdell heads into this season as Auburn's most experienced defensive player, having appeared in 44 games over the last four years while m aking 19 starts at tackle. During that time, he has totaled 67 tackles, including nine for a loss and three sacks, while also recovering a pair of fumbles.The numbers haven't been gaudy, but they rarely are for a 6-foot-2, 335-pound interior defen sive lineman. Still, Truesdell has been a key piece to the puzzle for Auburn up front during his career, often tasked with doing the dirty work inside to try to open things up for those around him - whether it was Bryant, Newkirk, Colby Wooden or Derick Hall last season, or the likes of Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson in 2019. After a bizarre season at the quarterback spot, redshirt junior JT Daniels could be a source of stability for a program entering the fall with national championship aspirations. Daniels passed for 401 yards and four touchdowns in his Georgia debut agains t Mississippi State after he was cleared from knee surgery. Georgia went 4-0 with Daniels at the helm. He passed for 1,243 yards with 10 touchdowns and 2 interceptions while completing 67.2% of his passes. Georgia averaged 8.3 more points per game (37.3) and 103.2 more yards per game (486) behind Daniels than it did under Stetson Bennett and D'Wan Mathis. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Cade Otton's importance can't be overstated. In his first four games as a full-time starter, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end from Tumwater led the Huskies in catches (18), receiving yards (258) and touchdown receptions (3) - establishing himself as Dyl an Morris' go-to target. And, besides his soft hands, route-running and penchant for carrying undersized, overmatched opponents for extra yards, he separated himself as a run-blocker as well. Still, Otton's value transcends his considerable on-field cont ributions. "We're really fortunate to have him back," Cato said. "Obviously the big part is as a player, he's a game-changer. It was another banner year for Alabama in the NFL draft, but one former Crimson Tide star did not hear his name called by a pro team last weekend. Dylan Moses, a former 5-star recruit and a first-team All-SEC pick in 2020, went undrafted and later signed a free-agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Moses battled injuries during his Alabama career, including a knee ligament injury that forced him to miss all of 2019 and a torn meniscus that he played with throughout this past season. Speaking to reporters Thursday night in Mobile, Saban said Moses going undrafted was not only unexpected, but perhaps a little unfair. He added that Moses should have been credited for playing hurt the entire 2020 season, in which he helped Alabama win the national championship."It had nothing to do with what kind of football player he is," Saban said prior to his speaking engagement at a fundraiser for Team Focus, a youth mentoring organization founded by former college football coach and television broadca ster Mike Gottfried. "It was all based on medical grades by the teams, which, frankly, was a little surprising to me. My time in the league, when guys came back and played, that usually got (them) out of that '5' medical grade, which is 'undraftable.' It might have been a '4' medical grade, which means a guy does have an injury that could be a problem in the future, but he's come back and played with it, so we have to give him an opportunity. "I certainly think that's where Dylan Moses should have falle n for sure, and should have gotten an opportunity, because he played all season long for us. Clemson will be getting a key member of its defensive line back next season. The school announced Justin Foster will be back for his senior year. Foster announced in February that he would step away from football because of complications related to asthm a and COVID-19. He missed the entire 2020 season. "It's not often you get a call from a great player that you think is gone and he says he's coming back," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "He's a great leader with great experience and a really talented f ootball player.Foster informed the coaches of his decision early this week. "For me, the decision came when I went to Duke a couple weeks ago and the doctor was positive on me recovering in the near future," Foster said in a school release. "In th e next month or two, she thought I'd recover enough to compete at the college level, and she motivated me and said that if I wanted to play again, she'd encourage me to and support me and she would do the best she could to get me back healthy. She believ ed that I will be healthy and, for me, that was a big stepping stone." Foster was a key member of the Tigers' defensive line in 2019 with 35 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks. For his career, he has 66 career tackles (17.5 for loss) and seven sacks. - The State

When Williams committed to Alabama Monday morning, the Missouri native and former top-100 recruit was just five days removed from entering the NCAA transfer portal at Ohio State. Tide wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins, a former college teammate of Greg ory at New Mexico, made contact after Williams went into the portal and helped the Crimson Tide beat out Georgia, Texas A&M and others to land the commitment. "It was one of them things: If I go in the portal, I want to entertain A, B, C and Alabama was one of the A, B, Cs," Gregory said. "... He's going to play for somebody that his high school coach knows. Dad originally wanted him to go to 'Bama. And then, on top of Ohio State being No. 1, Alabama was kind of 1A, 1B. So two years later to still have that opportunity… He was listening to some of the other schools too, but I kind of knew in my heart that it was going to be Alabama."Before Monday, the Tide only had two wide receivers who recorded more than three catches last year. Now, Alabama has another receiver with starting experience, a whole bunch more speed for its new quarterback Bryce Young and - as DeVonta Smith can attest to - someone who's capable of contributing on special teams if need be as well. Virginia Tech safety Devon Hunter accepted a plea agreement on Tuesday with the Montgomery Circuit Court. Under the plea agreement, both charges were amended to assault and battery misdemeanors (Class 1 misdemeanors). Hunter was facing charges of felony strangulation to cause wound or injury and misdemeanor assault against a family member. He was sentenced to 24 months jail time, but the jail time was suspended to one day on each charge, and two years probation under New River Community Corrections. If he violates his probation or faces other charges during that time, that suspended sentence could be revoked. - Richmond Times-Dispatch

Michigan's football team closed spring practice with three starters determined along its offensive line. The Wolverines now enter the summer looking for two more - as competition brews to figure out who will protect the quarterback this fall. At least, t hat's the word from head coach Jim Harbaugh, who appeared on the "In the Trenches" podcast last week. "There's just a battle going on to get to the five best," Harbaugh told host Jon Jansen. "And that's going to continue post-spring. It's going on now, i t's going to continue through the summer and also into fall camp." Here's what Michigan knows: Fifth-year senior Andrew Stueber, junior Ryan Hayes and sophomore Zak Zinter have all showed enough (and have the experience) to lock down starting roles Hayes at tackle, Harbaugh says, while Zinter and Stueber are flexible."Very good players," Harbaugh said to describe all three. "They put an exclamation mark on that in spring. I'd call them three solid starters in the top five." Stueber spent most of the spring lining up at right tackle, a position he's familiar with having played it before. The 6-foot-6, 339-pound Connecticut native can also line up at guard. Meanwhile, Harbaugh feels that the 6-foot-6, 334-pound Zinter can fill in at either guard o r center. Zinter started four games at right guard in 2020, suggesting that might be his preferred spot. Jameson Williams is leaving one 2020 national championship game participant for the other. The former Ohio State receiver announced Monday morning on Twitter that he will transfer to Alabama. Williams, who played two seasons for the Buckeyes, entered the portal about a week ago. Due to new NCAA transfer rules, Williams can play for Alabama this fall. Previously, undergraduate transfers had to sit out one year unless they received a waiver.Williams started for Ohio State last season, but it became clear this spring that would no longer be the case in 2021. Garrett Wilson shifted back outside along with Chris Olave to make room for Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the slot. That would have left Williams to contend for second-string snaps with redshirt freshm an Julian Fleming and true freshman Marvin Harrison Jr., who had an impressive spring. Alabama lost two receivers to the first round of the NFL Draft: Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. It returns John Metchie and Slade Bolden, who st arted when Waddle was out most of the season with injury. The Tuscaloosa gateway to the transfer portal has been more of an on-ramp - more of an exporter than an importer. That changed, at least for the moment, Monday when Jameson Williams took the T-town exit after leaving Ohio State. It was a move that made s ense for both sides, especially given the transfer rule recently passed by the NCAA. For Alabama, its receivers room lost its two most talented and experienced stars in DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. Slade Bolden was the lone receiver with serious expe rience who played on A-Day as he returns for a fourth fall at Alabama. John Metchie will be back this fall after missing the spring with an injury and there's certainly some young talent flashing potential.Williams, once the top-rated recruit in M issouri and No. 13 receiver nationally, brings two years of Big Ten experience to Alabama. He's known as a speed burner and that should come as no surprise to the Crimson Tide coaching staff. Though he caught just one pass for 14 yards in the CFP title g ame, Williams lit up DeVonta Smith right as he hauled in the first punt of the night. He also brings impressive height at 6-foot-2 and 188 pounds. It would also be fair to say he's leaving a more crowded depth chart in Columbus to transfer south. The ret urn of Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, former five-star Jaxon Smith Njigba and the emergence of freshman Marvin Harrison Jr. (you don't have to google it) this spring probably meant he'd be facing more seasoned competition at Ohio State than Alabama. - B irmingham News
