08/01/21 - QB Grayson McCall, rSr/2025, North Carolina State + More +   Coastal Carolina redshirt sophomore quarterback Grayson McCall has been named one of 35 "players to watch" for its 2021 Player of the Year award, The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Friday. The award is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. There are 25 offensive players (13 quarterbacks, eight running backs, and four receivers/tight ends) on the preseason watch list along with 10 from the defensive side of the ball. In all, 29 schools and 11 conferences (including independents) are represented on the list with Iowa State having four players on the list. Defending national champion Alabama has two players on the watch list, along with Notre Dame and Clemson. 08/01/21 - WR Justyn Ross, rSr/2022, Clemson + More +   Ross sat out of the 2020 season after having surgery due to a congenital spine fusion. In 2019, the last time he was on the field competitively, he started every game and totaled 865 yards and eight scores on a team-best 66 receptions. As a freshman, the Phenix City, Alabama native also reached 1,000 receiving yards, making him one of only four Tigers wide receivers to achieve the feat in the past five years. Ross was eager to get reps during the spring, but Grisham, going into his second season as the Tigers' full-time wide receivers coach, adhered to the rules of waiting for medical clearance. "He was like, 'Coach, man, let me compete in the spring, "Grisham said of Ross, who has built back up a good portion of muscle that he lost last year. "I'm like, 'I will lose my job if I let you get a rep of one-on-ones and I love my job and my family too much to do that." The fifth-year junior, who was named first team preseason all-Pac-12 and is on the watch lists for the Rimington and Outland trophies, intends to return to Oregon for his sixth season of college football in 2022. "I already told (offensive line) coach (Alex) Mirabal I plan to come back for a sixth year just because I haven't played a whole lot," Forsyth said. "I just started seven games so far and whatever happens this year. I love college football and it's my dream to play here so I'm going to focus on right now playing for them." 07/31/21 - RB Tyrell Robinson, rSr/2025, Army + More +   After showcasing his talents on the field in his freshman season, Army West Point football's Tyrell Robinson has been named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List. Robinson is one of only 57 players in the nation to earn a spot on the 2021 list. The Paul Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in college football by the Louisville Sports Commission in the memory of the late football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner in March of 2021. Robinson played a crucial role for Army a season ago as a running back and punt returner. 07/30/21 - QB Graham Mertz, rSr/2025, Florida + More +   Graham Mertz posted All-American numbers in his first college start. Leading Wisconsin against Illinois in the 2020 opener, Mertz completed his first 17 passes before a drop by tailback Garrett Groshek ended his streak, and he went on to finish 20 of 21 for 248 yards and five touchdowns. His completion rate of 95.2% was a program record and he tied the mark for most touchdown passes in a game. Mertz's numbers over the final six games were less than stellar as he completed 98 of 172 attempts (57.0%) for an average of 165.0 yards per game, with four touchdowns and five interceptions. There were mitigating circumstances to help explain the dramatic difference in the numbers. Mertz tested positive for COVID-19 the day after the opener, wide receivers Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor were both sidelined by injuries and the running game without Jonathan Taylor was plodding. Mertz volunteered in April that a shoulder injury he suffered required weekly cortisone shots during the season. Yet all that matters as Mertz prepares for camp as the No. 1 quarterback is that he must play better than he did last season when UW finished 3-3 in the Big Ten and 4-3 overall. 07/29/21 - TE James Mitchell, rSr/2022, Virginia Tech + More +   Virginia Tech senior tight end James Mitchell and junior defensive end Amare Barno and Virginia junior linebacker Nick Jackson were all named to the ACC's preseason all-conference football team, the league announced Tuesday. The 6-foot-3, 242-pound Mitchell, who is on the Mackey Award watch list as one of the nation's top tight ends, has 47 career receptions for 796 yards in 36 games for the Hokies. UW received 189 points and a total of two first-place votes, with the Ducks garnering the other 38. Oregon (238 points) was also chosen to top South Division champ USC (27 first-place votes, 227 points) in a rematch of the 2020 Pac-12 title game. The vote was completed by 40 media members who cover the league. 07/28/21 - WR Danny Davis III, rSr/2022, Wisconsin + More +   Alvis Whitted's second season at Wisconsin is on track to be much better than his rookie campaign. Consider that barely more than a week after Whitted was hired to coach UW's wide receivers in March 2020, the NCAA shut down its winter and spring sports because of COVID-19. That meant no spring practice for UW and no in-person coaching for Whitted until preseason camp. Then, after Big Ten teams finally got up and running in October, concussions limited UW's Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis to a combined five games and 11 receptions. "We missed the experience of guys that know game situations, that know how to make plays in those tough situations," Whitted explained. "We missed those down-the-field throws because they can take the top off of the coverage. "When those guys are out there, they're different and they add a different dimension to our passing game." Whitted should have a deeper and more experienced unit when UW opens camp Aug. 6. Davis and Pryor both opted to return for their final seasons. Davis has 15 starts and 39 games played at UW. He has 99 catches for 1,164 yards and 12 touchdowns. Pryor has 24 starts and 40 games played at UW. Uiagalelei is a 2021 Heisman Trophy candidate because of performances in two strong starts when veteran star Trevor Lawrence was out with COVID-19 in 2020. That was evident at the ACC Football Kickoff on July 22 when Uiagalelei was asked about his new Name, Image and Likeness deal with Bojangles. 07/25/21 - QB JT Daniels, rSr/2024, Rice + More +   A few days after the name, image and likeness law came into effect in the state of Georgia on July 1, J.T. Daniels signed a deal with the Everett Sports Marketing agency to oversee any potential agreements that could come the star quarterback's way. An immediate thought might've been that Daniels would use the law to benefit himself as athletes are able to profit from their likeness with events such as autograph signings, TV commercial appearances and more. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, according to head coach Nick Saban, said his new starting signal caller has had around $1 million in agreements since July 1. Daniels decided to alter his approach to the NIL opportunities. He announced plans Wednesday to help those around him, especially in the Athens community. Daniels will partner with Extra Special People Inc. to support those in an inclusive environment for people with physical and developmental disabilities from youth to adulthood. This marks Daniels' second known deal since the NIL law came into effect. He agreed to an autograph and memorabilia partnership with SportsCollectibles.com out of Tampa, Florida on July 15. Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei waited. Instead, he first signed an agent, VaynerSports. Less than a month later, Bojangles welcomed Uiagalelei to its team. Both he and North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell signed deals with the chicken franchise, announced on Wednesday. "College football is a huge passion point for Bojangles and our fans, so we are excited to be able to work with the athletes that make this sport so great," said Jackie Woodward, chief brand and marketing officer for Bojangles, via a press release. "These local stars have enjoyed our delicious food to fuel their athletic careers, and we're thrilled to officially be part of their journey." Uiagalelei confirmed the news with a 25-second Instagram video that featured Tigers offensive linemen Ryan Linthicum and Walker Parkers. The three are seated at a table sharing a meal with Parks feasting on what appears to be a chicken sandwich while Uiagalelei is pouring himself a cup of sweet tea. Before taking a sip, the sophomore quarterback compliments the company's consistency in the quality of food. "I'm excited to be one of the first college athletes to say 'It's Bo Time!'"
