Louisville defensive end AJ Green recovered a fourth-quarter fumble in the James Madison end zone and the Cardinals rallied to beat the Dukes 28-14 on Friday night. Green gave Louisville a 21-14 lead when Alonza Barnett III fumbled while being sacked. Th e Cardinals (2-0) trailed 14-6 early in the second half. On a night when both offenses struggled, it was the Cardinals defensive front that made the difference.Louisville's Miller Moss threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Chris Bell in the third quar ter and then ran for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14 with 8:37 left. The Cardinals sacked Barnett in the end zone two minutes into the final period on a third-and-10 play at the Dukes' 8-yard line. That was one of six sacks recorded by Lou isville. Barnett completed 15 of 25 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. WEEK 1 BIG SKY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rex Connors, UC Davis (DB, Sr., Pleasant Grove, Utah),...Big Sky Preseason MVP Rex Connors officially opened his season with another big performance, as he led UC Davis to a 31-24 comeback win over Utah Tech. The senior racked up 15 tackles, with eight being solos, and one pass breakup. Connors called all the defensive plays on the night, as he aided in stopping the Utah Tech offense in five consecutive drives to close out the comeback win. The weekly honor i s the first for Connors since winning it twice in 2022. With the 15 tackles, Connors now sits 12 tackles away from hitting a mark of 291 career tackles which will set the career program record for total tackles. The White, Ga., native completed 31-of-46 passes for three touchdowns—with no interceptions—and added 25 rushing yards in the ground game. Indiana's secondary depth took two hits in Saturday's season-opening 27-14 victory over Old Dominion, coach Curt Cignetti confirmed Monday. Cignetti said defensive back Bryson Bonds suffered a season-ending right knee injury and defensive back Byron Bald win Jr. also got hurt though his undisclosed injury is "more day to day." Bonds did not win a starting job in his sixth college season but was expected to play a key role again this season for No. 20 Indiana. He had appeared in 37 of 38 games since retur ning from another season-ending injury early in the 2021 season. He played high school football in Fort Worth, Texas. Bonds was injured late in the first half of Indiana's ninth straight home win, 27-14, under Cignetti. A Florida State linebacker is in critical but stable condition after being shot while visiting family, the Seminoles said Monday. Ethan Pritchard, a 6-foot-2, 224-pound freshman from Sanford, was in intensive care at a Tallahassee-area hospital. He was s hot Sunday evening while inside a vehicle outside apartments in Havana, according to the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office. "The Pritchard family is thankful for the support from so many people, as well as the care from first responders and medical profess ionals, and asks that their privacy be respected at this time," FSU said in a statement. Nico Iamaleava made a bigger splash in the transfer portal than he did in his debut for UCLA. The highly touted quarterback who left Tennessee after taking the Volunteers to the College Football Playoff last season struggled in a 43-10 loss to Utah at th e Rose Bowl on Saturday night. Iamaleava was sacked four times for 28 yards lost. He was 11 of 22 for 136 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception. Iamaleava was the Bruins' leading rusher with 13 carries for 47 yards, the most by a UCLA qua rterback since Ethan Garbers had 56 at Nebraska last season. Iamaleava was outshone by Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, a New Mexico transfer who was 21 of 25 for 206 yards and two TDs. Sam Leavitt accounted for 330 yards and four touchdowns, Jordyn Tyson caught two touchdown passes and No. 11 Arizona State overcame a slew of mistakes to beat Northern Arizona 38-19 on Saturday night. The Sun Devils reached the College Football Playoff f or the first time last season despite being picked last in the Big 12, sparking an interest that led to a school-record 14,280 students among the sold-out crowd. Arizona State fed off the energy by jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead against the Football Ch ampionship Subdivision Lumberjacks, but bumbled through the rest of the first half.Leavitt picked the Sun Devils back up, scoring on runs of 52 and 18 yards in the third quarter. He later hit Tyson on an acrobatic 16-yard TD that put Arizona State up 38-13. Leavitt threw for 257 yards and three TDs on 25-of-39 passing with an interception, adding 73 yards and a TD on the ground. Justice Haynes ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns and Bryce Underwood threw a touchdown pass, leading No. 14 Michigan to a season-opening 34-17 win over New Mexico on Saturday night. The Wolverines built an early cushion after Haynes scored on 56-and 5-yard touchdown runs in the first quarter. The transfer from Alabama had a 59-yard run that set up his 1-yard score to give Michigan a 17-point lead early in the fourth. Underwood, the fourth freshman to start at quarterback in program history, was 21 of 31 for 251 yards with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Marlin Kelin late in the first half to restore a two-touchdown lead.The Lobos converted a fourth down and scored a touchdown on a trick play, sending a direct snap to running back D.J. McKinney to set up a 9-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Thomas. They recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and kicked a field goal to move within 17-10 late in the first half. New Mexico pulled within 10 points late in the third quarter when Jack Layne lobbed a 3-yard pass to Thomas. The Lobos had a shot a shot to get closer early in the fourth, but Layne threw a pass up for grabs over the deep middle of the field and Brandyn Hillman intercepted it. Nicholas Singleton ran for two touchdowns, Penn State forced three turnovers and the No. 2 Nittany Lions pulled away to beat Nevada 46-11 on Saturday in the opener for both teams. Singleton capped Penn State's opening possession with a 1-yard run then sc ored on another short plunge early in the third quarter. Kayton Allen cut around the defense for a 13-yard score in the second. Nevada had already self-destructed by then. Penn State cornerback AJ Harris recovered Ky Woods' fumble to spoil the Wolf Pack' s opening drive. Their next possession ended when defensive tackle Zane Durant intercepted Chubba Purdy's pass deep in his own end.Ryan Barker kicked four field goals for the Nittany Lions, who led 27-3 at halftime after Kyron Hudson hauled in a 3 1-yard touchdown pass from Drew Allar with 23 seconds left in the second quarter. Hudson caught six passes for 89 yards, and Trebor Peña added seven for 74. Penn State outgained Nevada 436-203 and held the Wolf Pack to 78 rushing yards. Isaac Brown and the rest of his Louisville teammates made short work of visiting Eastern Kentucky on Saturday as the Cardinals rolled to a 51-17 victory in both teams' season opener. Brown, a sophomore running back, ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns o n only six carries. The second-team preseason All-American's day ended after his 68-yard scoring jaunt made it 28-0 less than four minutes into the second quarter. The Cardinals outgained the Colonels, 543-150, with 373 coming in the first half as they b uilt a 41-7 lead. That total did not include Caullin Lacy's 93-yard punt return for a score midway through the first quarter.The Colonels scored two touchdowns off of Louisville's three turnovers. EKU's Myles Burkett was sacked four times and comp leted just five of his 14 passes for 76 yards. Miller Moss played well in his debut with the Cardinals. The former Southern Cal quarterback exited after the first half in which he completed 17 of 25 passes for 223 yards and ran eight yards for a touchdow n.
