2022 ALL-BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM: DL - Brevin Allen, R-Sr., Campbell,...Allen became a four-time All-Big South honoree, despite being limited to just eight games in 2022. The redshirt senior totaled 22 tackles with 7.5 stops for loss, including 4.5 sacks, to go along with an interception, still ranking among the conference's leaders in tackles for loss and sacks. The defensive end from Greensboro, who earned All-America honors in 2021, was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week after posting three sacks and an interception in the first half of Campbell's win over Robert Morris, also earning honorable mention FCS defensive player of the week accolades. Allen has also been named to the Buck Buchanan watch list for FCS defensive player of the year, as well as the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000. - Campbell Football

2022 WALTER PAYTON AWARD WINNER: When people say "numbers never lie," they might be referencing UIW quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr., who this season posted some of the biggest passing statistics in FCS history. Scott helped UIW reach the national semifinals for the first time. Although his team fell one win shy of playing in the national championship game, the redshirt senior made the trip to Frisco, Texas, where Saturday night he received the 2022 Stats Perform Walter Payton Award, which honors the offensive player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision. Fordham fifth-year senior quarterback Tim DeMorat, who slightly outgained Scott for the FCS high in passing yards, finished second in the voting, while Monmouth sophomore running back Jaden Shirden, the national rushing leader, was third.

A 54-member panel selected the 36th annual award, which is named for legendary running back Walter Payton, who starred at Jackson State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Scott, 24, from Zachary, Louisiana, and a graduate transfer from Nicholls, was named the Southland Conference player of the year, helping coach G.J. Kinne's Cardinals to a 12-2 season. The 5-foot-11, 212-pounder completed 322 of 454 pass attempts (70.9 percent) for 4,686 yards and an FCS-record 60 touchdowns with just eight interceptions, posting an FCS-high 197.7 passing efficiency. He rushed for 712 yards and 11 touchdowns, lifting his total TDs (pass and run) to 71, also a single-season record. Among his many marks, Scott became the third player in FCS history to pass for seven touchdowns in one half of a game against Lamar, then did it a second time against Houston Christian. - STATS FCS Football

The USF football program's rebuilding job got harder Friday when standout running back/returner Brian Battie announced his intention to enter the NCAA's transfer portal. Battie, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound Sarasota native, has been one of the Bulls' best players over the past two seasons. He was a consensus All-American in 2021 after returning three kickoffs for a touchdown. Last year, he developed into a more complete offensive player, too. His 1,186 rushing yards are the sixth-most in USF single-season history.

Battie also broke a program record with 1,936 all-purpose yards and tied a USF record with five consecutive 100-yard rushing games. The news is somewhat surprising, given what Battie has previously said. Immediately after the season-ending loss to UCF, Battie said he was not considering the transfer portal. "I like to finish where I start at," he said then. Instead, he will likely finish elsewhere. - Tampa Tribune

When healthy, Miyan Williams formed half of an effective Ohio State football running back duo in 2022. Williams didn't explicitly announce he will be back with the Buckeyes for a fourth season in 2023. But posts on Twitter and Instagram both said "Unfinished business," hinting that the Cincinnati native will remain at OSU rather than pursue early entry into the NFL Draft. Williams then confirmed to the Columbus Dispatch that those posts did mean he will be back in Columbus this fall.

Williams' Instagram post also included the hashtag #ForGranny. That is presumably a reference to Tryphena Williams, his grandmother who died in early September. Williams attended her funeral on the Thursday prior to the Big Ten opener against Wisconsin, then rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. He posted an even bigger performance a week later, totaling 189 yards and five touchdowns on 21 carries in a rout of Rutgers. Williams also topped 100 yards in victories over Northwestern and Indiana. Yet he battled through a season-long series of injuries to his hand, ankle and knee. He also came down with a stomach bug prior to the Peach Bowl playoff semifinal against Georgia, which limited his playing time. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

South Carolina has lost another high-profile player to the NCAA transfer portal. Edge rusher Jordan Burch, one of the most highly ranked recruits in program history and one who had flashes of brilliance during his three-year career, entered the portal on Thursday, USC confirmed. He was third on the team with 60 tackles this year and first with 14 quarterback hurries. A Columbia native who played under USC alum Erik Kimrey at The Hammond School, Burch was second only to national No. 1 recruit Jadeveon Clowney in terms of the highest-rated prospects to ever pick USC. He only started one game in his first two seasons as he was behind entrenched edge rushers, but started every game in 2022.

Burch recorded 3.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss this season with one recovered fumble. He was many times a hair away from completing a sack or affecting the quarterback and USC also used him in other ways, such as an offensive lineman and receiver in the Gator Bowl. He finishes his USC career with 4.5 sacks and scored on a 61-yard interception return for a touchdown in the 2021 season-opener. - The Post and Courier

Another key member of Syracuse football's defense will return for 2023. Linebacker Marlowe Wax announced Tuesday night in conjunction with the program that he's staying at SU another year. He's the second player to share that decision in the past week, as defensive lineman Caleb Okechukwu said he'd be sticking around Saturday. Wax led Syracuse in tackles this year with 91, pulling ahead of teammate Mikel Jones after he was injured in the second-to-last game of the season. This was his third season with the team. An All-ACC honorable mention by the conference this year, Wax also had 4.5 sacks, seven quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. - The Post-Standard

Syracuse football will return some key experience and size on its defensive line next season. Caleb Okechukwu announced Saturday that he'll return for a sixth season, posting a parody of Michael Jordan's famous "I'm back" fax sent to reporters when he announced his return to the NBA in 1995.

Okechukwu became a full-time starter this season as SU lost all of its D-line starters from 2021. He had appeared in every game for the past two seasons, though. The defensive end finished with 48 total tackles, 10 of which were for loss, seven sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception he turned into a pick-6 in the Orange's narrow 32-29 win over Purdue. He more than doubled his tackle numbers from each of the past two seasons and had never had more than one sack in a year. - The Post-Standard

Graduate offensive lineman Brendan Bordner has declared for the 2023 NFL Draft after one season with the Owls via Twitter. With his announcement, Bordner became the first Owl to officially declare for the 2023 NFL Draft, with multiple expected to follow suit. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Columbus, Ohio native arrived at FAU in January 2022 as a graduate transfer following four seasons at Rutgers University. Bordner began his career on the opposite side of the ball as a defensive lineman at Hilliard Bradley High School, where he was a consensus three-star recruit and ranked 35th as a prospect in the state of Ohio on Rivals. - University Press

Southern California All-America defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu will enter the NFL draft. Tuipulotu, who led the FBS with 13 1/2 sacks as a junior, announced his decision on social media Tuesday. The 6-foot-4, 290 pound edge rusher had two tackles and one sack in the eighth-ranked Trojans' 46-45 loss to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl on Monday. He finished his college career with 21 sacks and 32 tackles for loss in 32 games. The younger brother of USC and Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Marlon Tuipulotu, Tuli impressed as a freshman during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season by getting two sacks and 2 1/2 tackles for loss in six games.

His last season was his best, with Tuipulotu finishing second nationally in tackles for loss with 22. The defensive equivalent to Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams, Tuipulotu's disruptive play helped a flawed defense lacking talent and depth - USC allowed 29.2 points per game and 6.5 yards per play - produce timely negative plays and takeaways. Tuipulotu received the Morris Trophy as the best defensive lineman in the Pac-12, an award voted on by players. He was also a finalist for the Bednarik and Nagurski Awards presented to the top defender in college football and the Lombardi Award for the top offensive or defensive lineman. Led by Williams and Tuipulotu, USC finished 11-3 and played in the Pac-12 title game and a New Year's Six bowl in coach Lincoln Riley's first season. The Trojans were 4-8 in 2021 when Clay Helton was fired as coach after two games. - AP College Football

Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall is seemingly headed back to Conway, withdrawing from the transfer portal days after playing in the Birmingham Bowl, according to a 247Sports.com report and his own social media account. McCall, 21, is CCU's all-time touchdown leader with 78, racking up more than 8,000 passing yards and emerging as one of the nation's most dominant Group of Five players. The Indian Trail, N.C. native announced Dec. 12 he planned to depart CCU after playing in the Dec. 27 Birmingham Bowl against East Carolina. The Chants dropped that game, 53-29 and ended their season at 9-4.

McCall posted a message to his Instagram account late Jan. 1, writing "run that (expletive) back turbo" soon after 247Sports.com broke news of his apparent decision. The RealMcCall.com, a fan website that tracks his statistics and accomplishments, is attached to CCU football's home page. This past season, his 24 touchdown passes put him among the top 30 FBS quarterbacks in America. He completed 69.1% of his pass attempts this past season, ranking seventh nationally He's a three-time Sun Belt Conference player of the year. - Myrtle Beach Online

When Brant Kuithe tore his right ACL on Sept. 25 at Arizona State, the assumption was the three-time All-Pac-12 tight end's college career was over. After all, he is a fifth-year senior who has already flirted with leaving for the NFL twice, but the fact that Kuithe only played four games this season and has never used a redshirt in his career left the door open for a return in 2023. Kuithe is with the Utes this week at the Rose Bowl, and on Saturday morning at media day, the door for his return remained open. "I still have a little bit of time, no rush right now," Kuithe said with a smile.

Pressed on whether or not he has made a decision and just isn't ready to announce it publicly, the Katy, Texas, native indicated that was indeed the case. Kuithe, Cam Rising, Devaughn Vele, Micah Bernard, and Thomas Yassmin are among the key Utes whose decisions on their respective futures will help shape what the 2023 season could look like. If, at a minimum, Rising and Kuithe return, the Utes would likely be looked upon as a top-15 team to open the season and among the favorites to win the Pac-12 for a third consecutive season. College underclassmen have until Jan. 16 to file declaration papers with the NFL seeking special eligibility for the draft, which is scheduled for April 27-29. - Salt Lake Tribune

After missing the first 10 games of the year, running back Rasheen Ali had an immediate impact on the offense when he returned. Suddenly, the weight of the running game wasn't all on the shoulders of senior Khalan Laborn, who ran for over 1,500 yards in 13 games this year. Instead, he and Ali split carries over the final three games of the season. In each of those, Ali led the team in rushing. He and Laborn each ran for over 100 yards against Georgia State and Ali's 94 yards and first rushing touchdown of the year in a 28-14 win over UConn in the Myrtle Beach Bowl on Dec. 19 was enough to earn him MVP honors in that game. "Whether he played in every game or played in a few games, him helping his team become champions today was a big part of this year," head coach Charles Huff said. "Really proud of him, really happy that he was able to battle back. He hadn't been hurt since he was in Little League and he twisted his ankle and they put some ice on it."

It wasn't until after Ali's return to the lineup that Huff and others on the team hinted at and later confirmed that the diamond of the Herd's backfield was dealing with a knee injury suffered in fall camp. Before the start of the season, the team announced Ali would spend some time away from the team until he was physically, mentally and emotionally ready to return. Huff said he believed that announcement protected the Herd and forced teams to prepare as if Ali could return any time. All along, there was never an official timetable, but he would be allowed to return when he felt ready. - Charleston Gazette

Jordan Travis threw for 418 yards and two touchdowns and No. 13 Florida State beat Oklahoma 35-32 on Thursday night in the Cheez-It Bowl. Johnny Wilson made a one-handed grab for a 58-yard gain to set up Ryan Fitzgerald's 32-yard field goal with 55 seconds left. The Seminoles (10-3) held on, sacking quarterback Dillon Gabriel on the Sooners' comeback bid. Jovante Barnes tied it at 32 for Oklahoma (6-7) with 3:37 left on a 12-yard run. That was after Travis fired a 17-yard pass to tight end Markeston Douglas in the end zone to put the Seminoles up 32-25 midway through the fourth. The Seminoles had gotten the ball off an Oklahoma fumble. Treshaun Ward's 1-yard rushing touchdown late in the third quarter gave the Seminoles an 18-17 lead - their first advantage since leading 3-0 in the opening quarter. Travis converted two third downs to guide Florida's State 94 yards on the 15-play drive.

The Sooners went up 25-18 with 13:22 left on 25-yard run by freshman Gavin Sawchuk and a successful 2-point conversion. Florida State needed just two minutes to go 75 yards to tie it at 25, with Ward taking the ball 38 yards into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. Florida State won its first bowl since the 2017 season, and its first under coach Mike Norvell. Travis, who has already announced his intention to return to the team for the 2023 season, became the 11th player in program history to pass for 3,000-plus yards in a season. Treshaun Ward had 81 yards on 10 carries for Florida State, and Wilson had a season-high 202 yards on eight catches. The Seminoles won their final five games of the regular season, scoring at least 38 points in all of them. Florida State was 5-3 in conference play with its first winning season since 2017, which also was Jimbo Fisher's last year coaching the team before taking the head coaching job at Texas A&M. - Florida State/AP College Football

Much has been made about Alabama stars Bryce Young and Will Anderson choosing to play in the Sugar Bowl later this week against Kansas State when most other elite NFL Draft prospects are deciding to "opt out" of postseason games. But let's not forget that the Wildcats have some future NFL prospects on their roster, too. No one would have blamed Felix Anudike-Uzomah, in particular, for skipping this game and focusing on his future as a professional athlete. The junior K-State defensive end was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year after piling up 44 tackles and sacking opposing quarterbacks 8 1/2 times this season. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, he is one of the most difficult edge rushers to block in all of college football.

Anudike-Uzomah will hear his name called in the 2023 NFL Draft if he decides to declare early as a junior, or in 2024, if he chooses to return to college for one more year. For now, he is torn on when he should make the leap. "I haven't really decided that yet," Anudike-Uzomah said Wednesday. "I'm still talking with my parents about it, just to make sure I finalize things and make the right decision on what I'm going to do. "Right now, I really want to focus on this. If you ask me questions about it after the game I can probably give you a better answer. But I'm still not 100% sure on it." - The Kansas City Star
