Jalen Mayden took great satisfaction last year in quickly and successfully moving midseason from safety to starting quarterback for San Diego State. But what sticks with Mayden, and fuels him during offseason workouts, is the way the season concluded for the Aztecs. "Definitely the finish," Mayden said. "I feel like I didn't do my part." He guided SDSU to wins in five of six games after replacing Braxton Burmeister as the starting QB, but the Aztecs suffered a 13-3 loss to Air Force in the regular seaso n finale and a 25-23 loss to Middle Tennessee in the Hawaii Bowl.SDSU was averaging 65.6 passing yards a game and ranked 131st - last - in the FBS in passing when Mayden took over. Mayden (141-for-237, 2,030 yards, 12 TDs/10 INTs) completed 59.5 p ercent of his passes while averaging 253.8 yards a game, third in the Mountain West and 32nd in the nation. But he also had at least one interception in each of the last six games, including three picks in the bowl loss. "I really take that to heart," Ma yden said. Jalen Mayden threw two touchdown passes to Mekhi Shaw, Kenan Christon scored on a 49-yard run and San Diego State beat New Mexico 34-10 Friday night. Mayden finished 15-of-25 passing for 280 yards, Shaw had six receptions for 120 yards and Christon added 102 yards rushing on 10 carries. San Diego State (7-4, 5-2 Mountain West) has won three games in a row and five of its last six.Mayden hit Shaw for a 51-yard TD to open the scoring about 5 minutes in, Nate Jones ripped off a 51-yard run that set up a 6-yard scoring run by CJ Montes to make it 7-7 going into the second. Jaylon Armstead capped a nine-play, 91-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run early in the second quarter and Shaw added a 30-yard touchdown grab that made it 21-7 with 1:48 left in the first half. Jalen Mayden threw three touchdown passes, Jordan Byrd returned a kickoff 95 yards for a TD and San Diego State beat San Jose State 43-27 Saturday night to become bowl eligible. San Diego State (6-4, 4-2 Mountain West) has won nine of its last 10 against the Spartans. Chevan Cordeiro threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Cooks to cap an 11-play, 73-yard opening drive and, after Michael Dansby picked off a pass from Mayden, Cordeiro added a 3-yard touchdown run that gave San Jose State (6-3, 4-2) a 14- 0 lead with 4:58 left in the first quarter. Byrd caught the ensuing kickoff at the 5, started up the middle and then broke multiple tackles as he broke to the left and raced up the sideline for a touchdown to ignite a string of 38 consecutive points by t he Aztecs.Jack Browning kicked a 22-yard field goal early in the second quarter, Mayden hit Shavers for a 66-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown less than 3 minutes later and Mekhi Shaw caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Mayden with 6:15 left in the second quarter to give SDSU a 17-14 lead at halftime. Jalen Mayden threw two touchdown passes and San Diego State held off UNLV 14-10 on Saturday night. Mayden connected with Jesse Matthews for a 28-yard touchdown for the only score of the first half. San Diego State (5-4, 3-2 Mountain West Conference) stre tched its lead to 14-0 on its first possession of the second half when Mayden hit Mark Redman for a 24-yard score. UNLV (4-5, 2-3) closed to within 14-7 on Doug Brumfield's 70-yard scoring strike to Nick Williams with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter. Daniel Gutierrez kicked a 29-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. Mayden completed 19 of 31 passes for 216 yards with one interception for the Aztecs. The mid-season exodus continues at Mississippi State. After quarterback Garrett Shrader announced his intention to transfer last week, a source confirmed to The Dispatch that junior signal caller Jalen Mayden and redshirt freshman Nick Pendley have enter ed the transfer portal. Paul Jones of 247Sports first reported the news. Mayden's departure is the most high-profile of the most recent exports. A former four-star recruit in the class of 2018, he was rated the No. 361 recruit in the class and the No. 16 dual-threat quarterback according to the 247Sports Composite. "In Texas he's a great athlete," Mayden's high school coach Red Behrens told The Dispatch over the summer. "And I know y'all have a lot of athletes in Mississippi, but he was a very athletic kid for us and made some great plays with both his legs and his arm." - The Dispatch
