Jovesa Damuni scored on a 4-yard run with two minutes remaining and No. 12 BYU rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half for a 25-21 win over No. 24 Georgia Tech on Saturday in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Damuni's scoring run capped a nine-play, 70-yar d drive by the Cougars (12-2), who were led by freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier. Bachmeier passed for 57 yards in the drive. Bachmeier was 27 for 38 passing for 325 yards with a touchdown and an interception as the Cougars piled up 426 total yards. It was the freshman's third 300-yard passing game of the season.Georgia Tech (9-4) had a chance to tie the game when senior quarterback Haynes King found Eric Rivers down the sideline with a 66-yard pass on fourth-and-15 to the BYU 18-yard line with 35 seconds to play. Facing fourth down, King threw to the end zone for Jamal Haynes, but BYU's Evan Johnson intercepted the pass in the end zone to secure the victory. King was 23 for 41 passing for 254 yards, two touchdowns and the game-ending intercep tion. The Cougars fell 11 points behind due to a 10-second scoring binge by the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech took a 14-10 lead on a King pass to Rivers with 5:28 to play in the first half. Cody Hagen muffed the ensuing kickoff and the Yellow Jackets reco vered the fumble. Bear Bachmeier threw for 289 yards and a touchdown to help No. 11 BYU beat UCF 41-21 on Saturday. LJ Martin added 95 yards and three touchdowns on the ground for the Cougars (11-1, 8-1 Big 12, No. 11 CFP) who clinched a spot in the Big 12 championship ga me next Saturday. Parker Kingston added 181 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. Tayven Jackson threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns to lead UCF. The Knights (5-7, 2-7 Big 12) did not qualify for a bowl game for a second straight season after giving u p 31 unanswered points to the Cougars. Jackson picked apart BYU's secondary in the first quarter, throwing for 110 yards while completing 10 of his first 12 passes. He tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Wade to put the Knights on the board and follo wed with a 20-yard strike to Agyeman Addae, giving UCF a 14-0 lead.Both receivers were wide open on their respective scoring plays. BYU rallied before halftime after allowing UCF to gain only 16 total yards during the second quarter. The Cougars f orced an interception on a trick play and allowed only minus 4 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, Martin punched it into the end zone twice from a yard out to level the score. Will Ferrin then gave BYU its first lead at 17-14, connecting on a 26-yard field goal right before halftime. The Big 12 has five teams in the Top 25 for the first time this season, Vanderbilt earned its highest ranking in 88 years and LSU dropped out of The Associated Press college football poll Sunday following its third loss in four games. The top six was unc hanged, with Ohio State holding the No. 1 spot for a ninth straight week followed by Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia and Oregon. The idle Buckeyes received 53 first-place votes and the Hoosiers got 11, six more than last week. Texas A&M was No. 1 on one ballot. No. 7 Mississippi and No. 8 Georgia Tech swapped spots, as did No. 9 Vanderbilt and Miami, which is tied at No. 10 with BYU. The Big 12's five ranked teams are BYU, No. 13 Texas Tech, No. 17 Cincinnati, No. 22 Houston and No. 24 Utah. The Bi g 12 last had five Top 25 teams in the Sept. 22, 2024, poll.Houston, which knocked off then-No. 24 Arizona State 24-16 for its first road win against a ranked opponent since 2017, is in the Top 25 for the first time since the first two polls in 20 22. Vanderbilt's 17-10 win over then-No. 15 Missouri gave the Commodores a 7-1 start for the first time since 1941 and, at No. 9, its highest ranking since it was No. 7 for one week in 1937. Vandy has a program-record three regular-season wins over Top 2 5 opponents. LSU was ranked as high as No. 3 for three weeks in September and in the top 10 for the first five polls. Road losses to Mississippi and Vanderbilt and this weekened's 24-point home loss against Texas A&M put the Tigers on the outside looking in. BYU safety Faletau Satuala returned an interception for a touchdown to help 11th-ranked BYU pull away in the fourth quarter, and the Cougars stayed unbeaten with a 41-27 win over Iowa State on Saturday. Bear Bachmeier threw for 307 yards and two touchdow ns and ran for another, and Chase Roberts and Parker Kingston each had over 100 yards receiving for BYU. Iowa State's Rocco Becht threw three interceptions, the last one coming with 1:14 left and allowing BYU to run out the clock. BYU (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) d rove 79 yards in the third quarter to take its first lead, converting two fourth downs before Bachmeier dashed 9 yards up the middle for a touchdown.After Iowa State (5-3, 2-3) tied it 27-all, BYU looked as if it would go three and out on its ensu ing possession. As the Cougars were preparing to down the punt, the ball touched Iowa State's Eli Green and BYU recovered. Three plays later Bachmeier, under pressure, threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Kingston. It was 41-27 less than a minute later when safety Satuala, who made a game-high 10 tackles, pulled a short pass away from Gabe Burkle and ran it back 40 yards for a touchdown. Bear Bachmeier had 229 yards of offense while throwing for a touchdown and running for another score to rally No. 15 BYU to a 24-21 victory over No. 23 Utah on Saturday night. LJ Martin added 122 yards on the ground to help the Cougars (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) remain unbeaten and beat their Holy War rivals for a third straight time. BYU has won three straight in the rivalry series for the first time since winning four straight from 1989 to 1992. "I've been a part of all three of those wins," senior safety Tann er Wall said. "To be able to say, leaving this place, I never lost to Utah, I'll wear that with a lot of pride for the rest of my life." Devon Dampier threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns for Utah (5-2, 2-2). Daniel Bray added a career-high 121 yards a nd a touchdown on 10 carries. The Utes surrendered 14 straight points after taking their first lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter. "We're not happy," Dampier said. "We know what our team is capable of. We had aspirations to be undefeated after our first loss, so it hurts us right now." Freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier ran for a 7-yard touchdown in the second overtime, BYU's defense stopped Arizona on the ensuing drive and the 18th-ranked Cougars stayed undefeated with a 33-27 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night. Bachmeier's run up the middle gave BYU a 33-27 lead, but the 2-point conversion attempt was deflected and fell incomplete. Arizona had a chance to tie the game, but Noah Fifita's fourth-down pass bounced off the hands of Javin Whatley, who was trying to make a tough cat ch in the end zone. "There's no better feeling than winning, especially winning in double overtime on the road against a really good team," BYU receiver Parker Kingston said. "It was awesome." BYU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) has won its first six games for a secon d straight season and seventh time in program history.Arizona (4-2, 1-2) has dropped two of its past three games. BYU fought back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 24 with 19 seconds left in regulation when Bachmeier ran for a 2-yard touchdown. Kedrick Reescano gave Arizona a 24-14 lead with 11:14 left in the game after a powerful 36-yard touchdown run that went right through the middle of the BYU defense. Bear Bachmeier threw for a career-high 351 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 23 BYU to a 38-24 victory over West Virginia on Friday night. BYU (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) rolled up 517 total yards and had two takeaways. Bear Bachmeier threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead BYU to a 69-0 victory over Portland State in his collegiate debut on Saturday night. Bachmeier, a Stanford transfer, became the first true freshman to start at quarterback in a season opener for the Cougars. He totaled 129 yards on offense and completed 64% of his passes in one half of play. BYU (1-0) churned out 468 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. The Cougars averaged 9.8 yards per carry and 14 different players had at leas t one rush. LJ Martin led the way with 131 yards on eight carries. Portland State (0-2) has been outscored 111-0 in eight quarters this season. The Vikings mustered minus-nine total yards over the second and third quarters. CJ Jordan led Portland State w ith 58 yards on 8-of-14 passing.The Cougars scored touchdowns on all five of their second-quarter drives to stake out a 49-0 lead. Bachmeier threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for two more scores during that stretch. Cody Hagen also scored o n a 57-yard reverse – his first career carry.
