WEEK 11 NEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Trey Watkins, LIU, Defensive Back, Redshirt Junior, 6-0, 185 lbs., Rahway, NJ/St. Joseph Regional (Lafayette),...Week 11 Stats: 6 tackles (5 solo), 1 pick-6 (30 yards),...LIU's defense has been stifling as of lat e thanks in part to Watkins, who has snagged two of the last three NEC/Atlantic Tomorrow's Office Defensive Player of the Week awards. The Rahway, NJ native has been an integral part of a Sharks' defense that has limited NEC squads to just 12.0 points pe r game, the second-best average in the league, this year. In addition, LIU nearly shut down the conference's top two scoring teams during that stretch, as it held undefeated Central Connecticut to 10 points on Nov. 1 before it limited Duquesne to 11 poin ts on Saturday, a mark that is significantly lower than the Dukes' season average of 29.4 points per game in league play. At Duquesne, Watkins posted six tackles, including five solo stops. Most impressively, the defensive back produced a pivotal play in the third quarter when he returned an interception 30 yards to the end zone to extend LIU's advantage to 22-3 in the eventual 29-11 win. Watkins leads the NEC with five picks this season while his 0.5 interceptions per game are good for second in the FC S. - NEC Football

WEEK 9 NEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Trey Watkins, LIU, Defensive Back, Redshirt Junior, 6-0, 185 lbs., Rahway, NJ/St. Joseph Regional (Lafayette),...Week 9 Stats: 5 tackles (3 solo), 0.5 tackles-for-loss (3 yards), 1 forced fumble, 1 interception (7 yards)...A transfer from Lafayette, Watkins became the second LIU player this season to take home NEC/Atlantic Tomorrow's Office Defensive Player of the Week distinction. The redshirt junior defensive back joined linebacker Rafael Fasolino in earning th e award after he enjoyed a stat-sheet-stuffing outing against New Haven with five tackles, 0.5 tackles-for-loss, one forced fumble and an interception. Each of the Garden State native's two turnovers - the forced fumble with 2:12 left in the opening quar ter and the pick with 3:44 to go in the second quarter - resulted in Sharks' touchdowns. In addition, Watkins anchored a defense that held the Chargers to just 61 rushing yards in the 38-16 triumph. On the season, Watkins has recorded 33 tackles, 1.0 tac kles-for-loss and a team-leading three interceptions. - NEC Football
