Jax Leatherwood threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns, and Tennessee Tech beat Monmouth 38-14 in a season opener for both teams on Saturday night. Tennessee Tech entered the game ranked 14th in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll, and the Hawks 22nd. Ten nessee Tech took a 7-0 lead when Leatherwood threw a 2-yard pass to Gabe Nunez with just under 10 minutes left in the first. Five minutes later, Elijah Jennings ran it in from the 11 to even the score. A minute before the break, Leatherwood threw an 18-y ard touchdown to Qua Ashley to make it 14-7.Carter Brown kicked a 40-yard field goal with 18 seconds before halftime for a 10-point lead. MJ Flowers ran it in from the 6 to end a five-play, 75-yard drive that lasted a little over two minutes for a 24-7 lead with 12:41 left in the third. Leatherwood threw his passing touchdown on a 16-yarder to Maury Sullivan early in the fourth for a 31-7 advantage. His fourth came on a 23-yard pass to Ashley with 10:39 remaining. The transfer from San Diego Mesa College, completed 21-of-33 passes and threw touchdowns passes of 55 and 8 yards in the second half while rushing for a three-yarder in the first half. Through two games this season he has completed 68.1 percen t of his passes and thrown four touchdown passes with no interceptions. Jax Leatherwood threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns and Southeast Missouri scored 30 straight points in a 30-21 home-opening win over North Alabama on Saturday night. SEMO (1-1), which trailed 7-0 with 43 seconds left in the first quarter, answered by scoring the next 30 points and UNA never recovered. The Lions scored the game's first points on a fourth-down 1-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Ari Patu. Justin Keller kicked a 29-yard field goal to cut UNA's lead to 7-3 with 6:17 left in the secon d quarter.The Redhawks took their first lead of the night on a 3-yard run by Leatherwood. His first rushing touchdown of the season finished an eight-play, 78-yard drive putting SEMO ahead, 10-7, at the 2:12 mark. Keller connected once more, this time from 27 yards out as time expired to give SEMO a 13-7 advantage at the half. In the third, Keller kicked a 48-yard field goal for a 16-7 margin. Leatherwood threw a 55-yard touchdown to Cam Pedro to extend the lead to 23-7. Leatherwood threw an 8-ya rd touchdown to Andrew Civey with 5:33 remaining to make it 30-7.
