  11/29/25 - QB John MateerrJr/2027, Oklahoma, 6-1, 224 (DS#4 QB) + More +

The pressure on Oklahoma coach Brent Venables reached a critical level after the Sooners finished 6-7 last season. He never wavered in his belief that he could turn things around and now, he likely has the Sooners headed to the College Football Playoff. John Mateer threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Sategna with 4:16 left to overcome three interceptions, and No. 8 Oklahoma beat LSU 17-13 on Saturday night. The Sooners (10-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference, No. 8 CFP) are in position to host a first-round game after winning four straight. Mateer was 23 of 38 for 318 yards and two touchdowns, and Sategna caught nine passes for 121 yards. "There's not a whole lot to really write about on the stat sheet, other than that score," Venables said.

Oklahoma held the Tigers (7-5, 3-5) to 198 total yards and came up with a late stop to hold on. LSU converted on just two of 14 third downs. "I thought in spots, we played outstanding and gave ourselves a chance," LSU interim coach Frank Wilson III said. "Unfortunately, it was not enough and we fell short. LSU played through rumors about its coaching situation. Brian Kelly was fired earlier and Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has been rumored to be his replacement. Kiffin was expected to make an announcement on Saturday regarding where he would coach next season, but he had not done so before LSU's game ended. Michael Van Buren Jr. started at quarterback for LSU with Garrett Nussmeier still recovering from an abdominal injury. Van Buren passed for 96 yards and ran for 33. Oklahoma was on the move early in the third quarter when Mateer threw an interception to A.J. Haulcy, who returned it 42 yards to the Oklahoma 33. LSU scored in four plays. Van Buren connected with Zavion Thomas for a 1-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers up 10-3. Oklahoma tied it late in the third quarter when Deion Burks took a short pass 45 yards up the middle. LSU went up 13-10 before the long pass from Mateer to Sategna. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

John Mateer threw two touchdown passes, and No. 8 Oklahoma defeated No. 23 Missouri 17-6 on Saturday to inch closer to a College Football Playoff spot. Mateer went 14 for 30 passing for 173 yards and ran for 60 yards. Isaiah Sategna caught three passes for 109 yards for the Sooners (9-2, 5-2 SEC, No. 8 CFP), who likely will make the playoff field with a win at home against LSU next Saturday. Oklahoma held the Tigers (7-4, 3-4, No. 22 CFP) to 301 yards and shut them out in the second half. The Sooners, coming off road wins over Tennessee and Alabama, claimed their third straight victory over a ranked opponent and their fifth over a team that was ranked when they played. Missouri's Ahmad Hardy, who led FBS with 134.6 yards rushing per game and ran for 300 yards and three touchdowns against Mississippi State last week, finished with 57 yards on 17 carries. Kevin Coleman Jr. caught seven passes for 115 yards for the Tigers.

Missouri quarterback Beau Pribula, who dislocated his left ankle last month against Vanderbilt and missed three games, returned on Saturday. He went 20 for 36 passing for 231 yards with two interceptions. Missouri took a 3-0 lead and tried to extend the advantage to six before Oklahoma's Peyton Bowen blocked Robert Meyer's 35-yard field-goal attempt. On the second play after the Sooners gained possession, Sategna turned a short catch into an 87-yard touchdown that put the Sooners up 7-3. Mateer connected with Javonnie Gibson for an 8-yard score that made it 14-3, and Oklahoma's lead was 14-6 at halftime. With Oklahoma up 17-6 in the third quarter, Sooner defensive back Reggie Powers III was ejected for targeting on what would have been a critical third-down stop. His teammate, Jacobe Johnson, intercepted Pribula on the next play to maintain Oklahoma's momentum. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

John Mateer threw for 159 yards and ran for 80 yards and a clinching touchdown with less than two minutes to play to lead No. 18 Oklahoma to a 33-27 win over No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday night. The Sooners (7-2, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) capitalized on three turnovers by the Volunteers (6-3, 3-3) to score 13 points. "Our guys matched (Tennessee's) physicality, and then some," said Oklahoma coach Brent Venables. "The pile constantly went in our direction. All those piles that fall forward add up to a lot." R Thomas Mason returned a fumble 71 yards for a score and Tate Sandell hit two field goals after interceptions. Sandell had four field goals in the game - two from 55 yards and one from 51. Joey Aguilar threw for 393 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Braylon Staley, who caught five passes in all for 75 yards for the Volunteers.

Though Tennessee dominated the first-half offensive stats (255-99), the Vols' mistakes allowed Oklahoma to lead, 16-10. "We didn't handle (Oklahoma's defense) well enough," said Tennessee coach Josh Heupel. "We gave them 16 points in the first half." Oklahoma's defensive pressure was obvious. Aguilar was sacked four times and harassed several other times. The Sooners allowed just 63 rushing yards. "(The Sooners) try to disguised coverages, and they did well on that," said Aguilar. "They like to go after the quarterback." "Some of the pressures (Oklahoma) had were a little different (from past games)," Heupel said. "We got beat a couple times." - Oklahoma/AP College Football

  10/25/25 - QB John MateerrJr/2027, Oklahoma, 6-1, 224 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer hasn't been the same since having surgery on his right hand. The Washington State transfer got off to a hot start this season, creating buzz and being mentioned as a Heisman contender. He was injured against Auburn and played through it, even running for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of a victory that gave the Sooners a 4-0 start and vaulted them into the AP Top 10. Mateer had surgery on the throwing hand during Oklahoma's off week, then sat out the win over Kent State. He returned for the showdown against Texas on Oct. 11, but he had the worst game of his career and threw three interceptions in a loss. He limited mistakes in a win against South Carolina last week as the running game carried the load. Mateer had some good moments Saturday against No. 8 Mississippi, and the 13th-ranked Sooners drove for a chance to tie late before missing a desperation pass in the final seconds.

But he acknowledged that he wasn't as sharp as he needed to be in the 34-26 loss Saturday. "I emphasize in practice throwing the ball down the field, and then I just missed," he said. "Can't happen in that situation. It's something I've got to learn from, something I have to be better at. Period. Got to be better." Mateer completed 17 of 31 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown and ran 13 times for 17 yards against the Ole Miss. The missed throws were unusual enough to prompt questions about his recovery. He said throwing the ball feels the same as it did before the surgery. The results haven't been the same. In his first four games, he completed 67.4% of his passes and averaged 279 yards passing. In the three games since his return, he has completed 58% of his passes, is averaging 192 yards passing, and the Sooners are 1-2. In his first four games, he had 43 carries for 190 yard and five touchdowns. Since then, he has 35 carries for 36 yards and hasn't scored. Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said Mateer is still healing. "He's practiced well, he's thrown with good accuracy, and he's made good decisions," Venables said. "I do think that's still a process of getting completely and fully healed. But I'm not sure if he has the limitations or not. Again, his velocity is good, his accuracy has been really good. So I haven't seen the limitations at practice." - AP College Football

John Mateer threw for 150 yards and a touchdown and Oklahoma's defense sacked South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers six times in the 14th-ranked Sooners' bounce-back 26-7 victory on Saturday. Oklahoma (6-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) saw its perfect start end last weekend with a 23-6 loss to Red River rival Texas. The Sooners used a steady offense and a best-in-the-nation defense to get back on track against the Gamecocks (3-4, 1-4). Mateer led touchdown drives of 75 and 92 yards - OU's defense held on fourth-and-goal from its 5 - for a 14-0 lead. Tory Blaylock had an 18-yard touchdown run to open the scoring and Xavier Robinson bullied his way into the end zone from 10 yards out to take a two-touchdown lead. The Sooners almost had a second fourth-down stop when officials ruled that Sellers had come up short inside the red zone. A replay review overturned the call and - after 11 snaps inside the 20 - South Carolina finally scored on a 2-yard flip toss from Sellers to Nyck Harbor. Oklahoma came in leading the nation in yards allowed at 193 and kept the pressure up against the Gamecocks. Defensive end Taylor Wein sniffed out a fake punt pass by South Carolina's Mason Love and got the interception. Five plays later, Mateer found Isaiah Sategna III for a 20-yard TD and a 24-7 lead. Then again, Oklahoma coach Brent Venables knows how to lock down South Carolina at home. He went 4-1 at Williams-Brice Stadium as Clemson's defensive coordinator, and his group held the Gamecocks to an average of 285 yards and four points in Venables' last three times in the building. Sellers, a projected NFL first-round draft pick, finished with 124 yards passing. As a parting shot, Oklahoma defensive tackle Markus Strong tackled tailback Matt Fuller in end zone for a safety with about four minutes left. Blaylock ran for 101 yards and Oklahoma kicker Tate Sandell matched his career long with a 55-yard field goal. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer's status has been upgraded to probable for the Sooners' game Saturday against Texas. Mateer injured his right hand during a 24-17 win over Auburn on Sept. 20. The change from questionable was listed Thursday on the Southeastern Conference availability report. Mateer led the sixth-ranked Sooners (5-0, 1-0) to wins over Michigan and Auburn - both Top 25 teams when the games were played. The transfer from Washington State has passed for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 190 yards and five scores in four games.

Mateer played three quarters against Auburn with the injury to his throwing hand and still scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter while hurt. He had surgery during Oklahoma's off week, then missed last week's game against Kent State. Michael Hawkins Jr. stepped in and threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score in the Sooners' 44-0 win. - AP College Football

  10/07/25 - QB John MateerrJr/2027, Oklahoma, 6-1, 224 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer might not be healthy in time for Saturday's rivalry game against Texas in Dallas. Mateer suffered an injury to his right hand - his throwing hand - during Oklahoma's 24-17 win over Auburn on Sept. 20. He played three quarters with the injury and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 9-yard run while hurt. He had surgery during Oklahoma's bye week, then sat out last week's 44-0 win over Kent State. Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said Mateer, one of the top quarterbacks in the nation before the injury, has not practiced against the Sooners' first-string defense since the injury. Michael Hawkins Jr. and Whitt Newbauer are getting practice reps against the defensive starters for the sixth-ranked Sooners (5-0, 1-0 SEC).

Venables said he's depending on the doctors to let him know what to do. "John is doing no good-on-good work," Venables said. "So it's Michael and Whitt right now. If something changes, I'll let you know. But I think if you're going to play, you've got to do good on good, right?" There's still time before Saturday's game, and plenty can change. And if Mateer is available, it makes sense to play him. The transfer from Washington State has passed for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 190 yards and five scores in four games. "We'll plan for Mateer," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. "You have to. He's a dynamic player. He's the heartbeat of that offense for sure. Everything goes through him." If it's not Mateer, Hawkins will start. Hawkins started in last year's loss to Texas and struggled in the 34-3 romp. Sarkisian said Hawkins is no longer that true freshman who was overwhelmed at the Cotton Bowl last year. Hawkins threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score against Kent State. Texas (3-2, 0-1) expects a more mature version this time around if he plays. - AP College Football

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, one of the nation's top players in the early weeks of the season, will have surgery to repair an injury to his throwing hand.   Oklahoma turned a breather of a game sandwiched between tougher tests into a bit of child's play at the home of the defending Super Bowl champions. OU coach Brent Venables says his team's performance when they're on "resembles recess." John Mateer threw for 282 yards and a touchdown and had a 51-yard rushing score and Tory Blaylock rushed for 100 yards and a pair of TDs to lead No. 13 Oklahoma to a 42-3 victory over Temple on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field, home to the Philadelphia Eagles. "This is a very hungry, driven, humble, tough, high-standard group of young men that like to be pushed, liked to be challenged, they like to practice," Venables said. "When they play together, it does, it kind of resembles recess. I say that respectfully. They have fun." The Sooners (3-0) had tons of fun early when they scored on their first four possessions and took a 25-0 lead in the first half.

OU made a rare trip to the East Coast and boasted a solid turnout of fans - even while the marching band stayed home - and crimson and cream were the primary colors among an announced crowd of 24,927 fans. Even with the solid OU turnout, that number failed the eye test - though the Sooners looked every bit a playoff contender as advertised. Jovantae Barnes scored a 3-yard rushing TD on the opening drive and OU converted the 2-point conversion for the 8-0 lead. The Owls (2-1) made a nice defensive stand on the next drive, with a sack and a tackle for a loss that pushed the Sooners into a fourth-and-long. No problem for OU. Tate Sandell promptly kicked a 52-yard field goal. So it went from there. Blaylock added TD runs of 6 and 18 yards in the second quarter for the Sooners and the expected rout - they were a 24-point favorite, per Sportsbook - was on. OU also beat Temple 51-3 in 2024. Mateer, the former Washington State QB and one of the most coveted players out of the transfer portal, threw a 6-yard TD pass to Xavier Robinson in the second half and made it 42-3 with a 51-yard scoring run later in the third. Mateer leads the nation with at least one rushing and one passing touchdown in nine straight games. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

John Mateer passed for 392 yards and three touchdowns in a record-setting first game at Oklahoma, and the 18th-ranked Sooners beat Illinois State 35-3 on Saturday night. Mateer, a transfer from Washington State, set the school record for most yards passing in an Oklahoma debut, surpassing Baker Mayfield's 388 yards against Akron in 2015. Keontez Lewis, a transfer from Southern Illinois, had nine catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns for Oklahoma. Jaren Kanak, a converted linebacker, had five catches for 90 yards.

Deion Burks added seven catches for 88 yards and a score for Oklahoma, which gained 495 yards in Ben Arbuckle's first game as offensive coordinator. The Sooners allowed just 151 total yards, including 34 yards passing, with head coach Brent Venables as the defensive play-caller. He took over after his previous play-caller, Zac Alley, left to become defensive coordinator at West Virginia. Wright Wenkers had 50 yards on seven carries for Illinois State. The FCS Redbirds' only points came on a field goal after Mateer threw an interception deep in his team's territory in the third quarter. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

John Mateer threw five touchdown passes and Washington State began a season of dramatic change in big-play style with a 70-30 win over Portland State on Saturday. Left behind with Oregon State amid the ruins of the Pac-12 collapse, the Cougars are playing an independent schedule, facing mostly Mountain West schools. But Saturday they created 637 yards offense and eight offensive scoring plays of 30 yards or more against the FCS Vikings. It was the first time WSU reached 70 points since 1997 when it scored 77 against Southwestern Louisiana.

Mateer, who had appeared in 12 games over the past two seasons with just 19 total passing attempts, started for WSU, taking over for Cam Ward, who transferred to Miami. Mateer threw TD passes ranging from 30 to 59 yards, starting with Kris Hutson’s diving catch. Mateer added a 40-yard touchdown on a quarterback draw and WSU led 49-17 at halftime. The Cougars had nearly 400 yards offense in the first half. The defense also turned in a big play when Stephen Hall made an interception a few yards deep in the end zone and returned it for officially a school-record 100-yard pick-6. - AP College Football
