Mark Stoops has made no secret of his desire to add more speed to Kentucky football's wide receiver room in recent years. But freshman Jordan Anthony has put that goal to the test in a way Stoops did not anticipate. "Might be a little too fast," Stoops j oked when asked about Anthony at SEC Media Days this summer. "I'd hate to lose him to the Olympics." That fear seemed justified after Anthony won the U.S. U20 200-meter dash title in Oregon in June. When he crossed the finish line in 20.34 seconds to bea t future UK track teammate Brandon Miller, Anthony earned a spot in the U20 world championships.That event was scheduled for this week in Colombia. Participating would have meant Anthony missed at least the first week of Kentucky's preseason footb all camp. Instead, Anthony elected to stay in Lexington, placing his track career on hold in hopes of earning a spot in the wide receiver rotation as a freshman. "I just chose to stay here because I wanted to learn the offense, to be able to play more an d develop my skills," Anthony said at UK's preseason Media Day on Wednesday. Former Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen was clear about the priority in the Wildcats' 2022 recruiting class when asked about the wide receivers he had just helped sign in December. "We need to continue to get faster at the receiver position and o verall as an offense to complement the physicality that has already been provided in here," Coen said. How well Kentucky addressed that need with the four high school receivers signed in the class will be determined on the field starting this fall, but a t least one of the incoming freshmen has more than backed up his reputation before even joining the team.A banner weekend for the Kentucky track and field program at the U.S. nationals that saw individual titles from former Wildcats Keni Harrison, Sydney McLaughlin, Daniel Roberts and Andrew Evans as well as current senior sprinter Abby Steiner was boosted by incoming freshman Jordan Anthony's 200-meter title at the U20 national championship. Before Anthony launches his track career at Kentucky, he will play for the football Wildcats as a freshman wide receiver this fall. "He's very elusive," said Osborne Holmes, Anthony's football coach at Tylertown High School in Mississippi. "He's got great feet. He's got more than straight-line speed. Once y ou put the ball in his hands, he's very dynamic. He's going to make the first guy miss. He's going to roll with it...You just give him a crease, and he'll take it to the house." Anthony won the 200-meter title in 20.34 seconds, edging future Kentucky tra ck teammate Brandon Miller (20.47) seconds, to qualify for a spot in the U20 World Championships.
