09/07 WEEK 1 UAC CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tarleton State's Tylan Hines had a record-breaking week to give him an Offensive Player of the Week nod. The 5th year running back had personal and FCS-season highs in rushing yards (250) and scrimmage ya rds (297) en route to the Texans' second win over an FCS opponent over as many years. He had clocked a 72-yard run to set up a touchdown in the second quarter and took Tarleton State from its own eight-yard line to the Bowling Green nine-yard line after a breakaway 83-yard run late in the fourth quarter. - United Athletic Conference Football

Tarleton State traveled to the state of Ohio for the first time since 1991 and faced FBS-member Bowling Green for the first time. The Texans walked away with a 20-13 victory, their second straight against an FBS opponent after upsetting Army in double ov ertime, 30-27, in 2025. Tarleton State remains No. 5 in this week's AFCA FCS Coaches Poll. Montana State still holds the top spot after beating Butler, 51-24, and moving to 2-0 on the season. In-state rival Montana moves back to the second spot after Sou th Dakota State lost to FBS-member, Northwestern, 34-18, and dropped to No. 3. Illinois State stayed at No. 4 after handing Western Illinois a 34-18 loss.Just two games into their first season as a member of the Football Championship Subdivision, West Florida makes its first appearance in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll at No. 22. The Argonauts beat their second straight ranked opponent, this time taking down then-No. 24 Central Arkansas, 42-14. They get a week off before facing their third ranked oppo nent in No. 15 Austin Peay on September 19. Idaho State follows West Florida as the second newcomer to this week's poll. Tylan Hines rushed for 250 yards, including non-scoring runs of 83 and 72 yards, and Tarleton State of the FCS defeated Bowling Green 20-13 on Saturday. With Bowling Green driving for a potential tying or go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Ta rleton's Roddrick Roberts and Jadan Aubert combined to stop Austyn Dendy on a fourth-and-1 play at the 8-yard line. Hines then bolted 83 yards on the next play from scrimmage. But three plays later, Hines lost a fumble near the goal line with 1:35 remain ing. Bowling Green's final drive ended at the Texans' 8-yard line on the last play of the game. Tarleton State led 10-0 midway through the second quarter and stretched it to 17-0 on Kaden Anderson's 7-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Willis. It capped a 99 -yard drive that took only six plays, beginning with a 72-yard run by Hines. Bowling Green then bounced back with a six-play 69-yard drive capped by Dendy's 3-yard touchdown run, making the halftime score 17-7.Anderson completed 16-of-24 passes fo r 206 yards with two touchdowns for the Texans (2-0). Jay Kastentin went 24 for 30 for 283 yards for the Falcons (0-1). Jeremiah Scoby had 10 catches for 103 yards. The Texans are ranked No. 5 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 and are coming off a quarterf inal appearance in the 2025 FCS playoffs. They have won their past two games against FBS opponents, having defeated Army 30-27 in two overtimes last season. It appears football's run-and-shoot offense was designed with Tylan Hines in mind. This spring training, Hawaii's Hines has been practicing as both a running back and slot receiver."It's been fun trying to learn both sides to the best of my knowledge," s aid Texas-reared Hines, who will be a sophomore this coming season. In 2022, Hines had 97 touches - 83 rushes, nine catches, five returns - and a pancake block. "Honestly, running back comes more naturally to me, but I can be a receiver, as well," Hines said. "They're both fun."Hines has been cross-training for a multi-purpose role since he was old enough to carry the groceries into his family home. "You can't drop the bread," he said, smiling, of the high-and-tight grip he still uses. "I tried n ot to drop anything. I liked to make one trip and carry (all the groceries)." At 5 feet 7 and 170 pounds, Hines is a mouthpiece-loosening blocker and stubborn runner. Last season, he averaged 3.87 post-contact rushing yards. His best running lanes were u p the gut, where he averaged 9.7 yards. When targeted on crossing routes, he caught 71.5% of the passes for an average of 15 yards per reception. - Honolulu Advertiser

Spring ball is underway for the University of Hawaii football team. The Rainbow Warriors began spring practice at the UH-Manoa campus on Monday morning. The unusually start to spring practice, which takes place from to Feb. 6 to March 3, is due to a cons truction project that will take place at UHM's grass practice field and the Clarence T.C.
