2025 BIG TEN AMECHE-DAYNE RUNNING BACK OF THE YEAR: Emmett Johnson, Nebraska,...Johnson is Nebraska's first winner of the Ameche-Dayne Award and the first Husker to capture a positional award since Austin Allen was named the Big Ten's Tight End of the Ye ar in 2021. Johnson's 2025 season has been one of the best by a running back in Nebraska football history. His 1,451 rushing yards rank in the top 10 in school history and the most by a Husker since 2014. Johnson has rushed for better than 100 yards eigh t times this season, including six times in conference play.Johnson's average of 120.9 rushing yards per game leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth nationally. Johnson also leads all FBS running backs with 46 receptions for 370 yards. His 1,821 yards from scrimmage rank second nationally and first among Power Four Conference players. His season stacks up well historically with Big Ten greats. Johnson is just the seventh Big Ten player since 1956 to have 1,400 rushing yards and 350 receiving yards in a season. TJ Lateef was 13 for 15 for 205 yards and three touchdown passes in his first collegiate start, Emmett Johnson went over 100 yards rushing and receiving, and Nebraska defeated UCLA 28-21 on Saturday night for its first win in Pasadena since 1993. Playing at the Rose Bowl 25 miles from his hometown of Compton, Lateef took over from Dylan Raiola, who is out for the rest of the season with a lower right leg injury he sustained in a 21-17 loss to Southern California last week. Lateef played the final four p ossessions against the Trojans. As the first true freshman to start for Nebraska since 1950, Lateef directed the Cornhuskers (7-3, 4-3 Big Ten) to scores on their first four possessions for a 27-7 lead. "I was just really trying to soak the whole moment up," Lateef said. "It was a blessing." Jacory Barney Jr. caught Lateef's 2-yard pass on the right side pylon, which bent over, for Nebraska's first TD after a video review. Lateef hit Johnson with a pass at the Nebraska 41 and Johnson rumbled 56 yards do wn the left sideline past his own bench for the score. Johnson's 1-yard TD run capped the Cornhuskers' scoring in the first half. "Emmett is just an absolute weapon," Huskers coach Matt Rhule said. Nebraska extended its lead to 28-7 to open the third on Johnson's 40-yard TD catch from Lateef. Chants of "Go Big Red!" filled the Rose Bowl from red-clad fans who packed the historic stadium's east stands.They also shouted out Lateef's name. "It was cool, man," he said. Lateef was 10 for 10 for 173 ya rds going into the fourth. Already the first 1,000-yard rusher at Nebraska since 2018, Johnson had 28 carries for 129 yards and ran for one TD. He had three catches for 103 yards and two TDs. "Most of our game plan was to stop 21 (Johnson)," UCLA interim coach Tim Skipper said. "He's a special, special player." After a bye week, the Bruins (3-6, 3-3) were trying to bounce back from a 56-6 drubbing at No. 2 Indiana that ended their three-game winning streak. Their only score in the first half was Jalen B erger's 1-yard run on a direct snap that tied the game 7-7. Mateen Bhaghani missed a 49-yard field-goal attempt wide left just before halftime. Nico Iamaleava hit Anthony Woods with a 45-yard TD pass that left UCLA trailing 28-14 in the third. The Bruins closed to 28-21 on Iamaleava's 9-yard scoring pass to Anthony Frias II with 4:54 remaining in the game on a drive that began at their 3-yard line. Emmett Johnson scored the tie-breaking touchdown on a 4-yard run with 2:44 left, and Nebraska ended Northwestern's four-game winning streak with a 28-21 victory Saturday to become bowl eligible for the second straight season. The Cornhuskers (6-2, 3-2 Bi g Ten) bounced back from a loss at Minnesota last week, but not before some anxious moments after they squandered a 15-point lead. Dylan Raiola converted four third-down passes on the winning 13-play, 64-yard drive that chewed 6:27 off the clock. The Wil dcats (5-3, 3-2) turned the ball over on downs, and Nebraska ran out the clock. Johnson had a career-high 27 carries and finished with 124 yards as Nebraska leaned into the run game after Minnesota sacked Raiola nine times. Raiola was 16 of 22, his secon d-fewest attempts in 21 career games, for 141 yards.The Huskers had led 21-6 midway through the third quarter after Kenneth Williams' 95-yard kick return and Nyziah Hunter's diving catch for a touchdown. The Wildcats drove 78 yards to pull within 21-13 on Caleb Komolafe's 4-yard run, and on their next possession Komolafe bounced to the outside and ran free for a 56-yard TD. Preston Stone threw to Hayden Eligon II under pressure for the 2-point conversion to make it 21-all. Northwestern was in pos ition to take the lead when Mac Uihlein picked off Raiola to set up the Wildcats at the Nebraska 34, but the Huskers got the ball back when Stone threw an interception over the middle to waiting linebacker Javin Wright.
