2022 JERRY RICE AWARD WINNER: QB Gevani McCoy, Idaho,...One of the key aspects of the University of Idaho entering the 2022 season with a freshman starting quarterback was Gevani McCoy's reactions after plays. They were often the same whether the result of a play was positive or negative for the Vandals. McCoy's even-keel demeanor at football's most-important position was as pivotal as the production he supplied during Idaho's surprising run to the FCS playoffs. It all combined into the redshirt freshma n becoming a runaway winner among 25 finalists for the Stats Perform Jerry Rice Award, which is presented to the national freshman of the year in college football's Division I subdivision. A 54-member panel voted on the 12th annual award - named after le gendary wide receiver Jerry Rice, who starred at Mississippi Valley State as part of his Hall of Fame career - with UAlbany quarterback Reese Poffenbarger finishing second and Saint Francis wide receiver Makai Jackson third. McCoy will be honored at the FCS National Awards banquet on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas.In Idaho's first four seasons after returning to the FCS from the FBS level in 2018, the Vandals did not finish with a winning record, either overall or in the Big Sky Conference. This season, first-year coach Jason Eck and his staff selected the 6-foot, 175-pound McCoy as the starter following a preseason competition, and the decision paid off. After the Vandals opened the campaign with back-to-back competitive losses to FBS opponents, they went on to win at rival Montana and go 7-4, including a 6-2 Big Sky mark and a tie for third place in the 12-team conference. They lost 45-42 at Southeastern Louisiana in the playoffs. McCoy, who played in 11 of the 12 games, threw for at least three tou chdowns five times, and he set the Vandals' single-game record for completion percentage by going 18 of 20 (90 percent) in a win at Northern Arizona. He finished the season 203 of 297 (68.4 percent) for 2,721 yards and a freshman-high 27 touchdowns again st seven interceptions with a 170.6 passer rating that ranks fifth in the FCS. 2022 JERRY RICE AWARD FINALIST: Gevani McCoy, Idaho, R-Fr., 6-0, 175 (Big Sky),...McCoy, a redshirt freshman is one of five quarterbacks on the list. He is the only quarterback to lead his team to the FCS playoffs. He also has the most touchdowns passes among freshmen with 25 and is second with 2,376 yards despite missing the season finale at Idaho State. He is first in completion percentage (68.0%) and in passer rating (168.4). He has only thrown five interceptions so far this season. Of the 25 players on the list, only five are playing in the playoffs. Saint Francis WE Makai Jackson, UC Davis DB Rex Connors, William & Mary DV Jalen Jones and Montana punter Patrick Rohrback join McCoy in the postseason. Gevani McCoy threw four touchdown passes to Hayden Hatten in the first half and Idaho raced past Eastern Washington 48-16 on Saturday. The duo connected for 33-, 17- and 18-yard touchdowns on consecutive possessions for a 21-7 lead early in the second qu arter. Hatten, who finished with 10 catches for 146 yards, set a single-game record for receiving touchdowns with a 19-yard touchdown reception after Eastern had pulled within 21-10 on an 87-yard connection between Gunner Talkington and Nolan Ulm. Roshau n Johnson scored on a 4-yard run and the Vandals (6-3, 5-1 Big Sky Conference) led 35-10 at the half. McCoy finished 16 of 28 for 218 yards with two interceptions. Elisha Cummings had 16 carries for 128 yards and Johnson had a second touchdown run to clo se the scoring. Talkington was 15 of 24 with a 75-yard scoring pass to Freddie Robertson but the Eagles (2-7, 1-5) only had nine first downs. Gevani McCoy threw four touchdown passes and caught a pass for a fifth score, leading Idaho to a 56-21 victory over Portland State on Saturday. McCoy's four passing touchdowns came on only 10 completions. He was 10 of 19 for 248 yards. His 14-yard TD rec eption came on a halfback pass from Elisha Cummings and gave Idaho a 28-21 lead early in the third quarter. The Vandals added a McCoy-to-Hayden Hatten 6-yard pass late in the third quarter, plus three touchdown runs in the fourth - two by Roshaun Johnson and one by Anthony Woods.Woods had 130 yards rushing and Aundre Carter 92 among Idaho's 309 yards on the ground. Johnson scored twice. Jermaine Jackson had 132 receiving yards with two touchdowns for the Vandals (5-2, 4-0 Big Sky Conference). Por tland State's Dante Chachere completed 12 of 25 passes for 205 yards with a touchdown but was intercepted three times.
