UCF quarterback Tayven Jackson returned from injury to throw two fourth-down touchdown passes to freshman receiver Chris Domercant as the Knights snapped a three-game losing streak with a 45-13 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Jackson missed last week's game against No. 24 Cincinnati after injuring his shoulder against Kansas two weeks ago. UCF (4-3, 1-3 Big 12) was without its starter from last week. Cam Fancher, who was ruled out for this game, so the Knights turned back to Jackson. He threw fo r 277 yards and two touchdowns on 23-for-34 passing in the game. Domercant caught five passes for 89 yards to lead UCF's receiving group. West Virginia (2-5, 0-4) struggled to find its offense.The Mountaineers only scored off Knights turnovers, th e first on fourth down in Mountaineers territory and the other after a fourth-quarter interception was returned to the 2. Kahlil Wilkins led the Mountaineers in rushing with 48 yards on 15 carries, including a 6-yard touchdown run. Diore Hubbard scored t he other touchdown. UCF outgained West Virginia 578-210. UCF opened the game up in the third quarter, starting the half with a nine-play, 92-yard drive capped off by a 12-yard run from Jaden Nixon. The Knights defense got on the board with a strip-sack f orced by Nyjalik Kelly that Keli Lawson returned 32 yards for a touchdown. Nixon scored his second rushing touchdown on the next UCF possession with an 83-yard run, completing UCF's third scoring drive of 80 yards or more. UCF's Tayven Jackson threw for 223 yards and scored a passing and rushing touchdown to guide UCF to a 34-9 victory over North Carolina. The Knights were mostly methodical throughout the game, with three touchdown drives of longer than five minutes. But t hey scored a critical touchdown on a 64-second, six-play, 83-yard drive to close the second half when Jackson found Kylan Fox for an 18-yard score. After forcing a punt to open the third quarter, the Knights scored on a short run from Myles Montgomery to take a 24-point lead and coasted to the finish, getting a rushing touchdown from Jaden Nixon on the team's final drive with less than two minutes left. The Tar Heels could not respond to the Knights' long drives.UNC quarterback Gio Lopez struggle d with 11-for-14 passing and 87 yards. The Tar Heels tallied only 217 yards. The Knights had 366. UCF forced two interceptions in the first half, picking off Lopez on a deflected pass at the line by Horace Lockett that was snagged by defensive end Nyjali k Kelly. They also got a second deflected pass when Jayden Bellamy tipped a pass to Braeden Marshall to stop a deep North Carolina drive. Lopez left the game in the third quarter with an apparent right leg injury after he was tackled on a fourth-down con version. Lopez left the field in a cart after an extended time in the medical tent. Max Johnson took over, finishing the drive with a touchdown throw to Nathan Leacock late in the third quarter. UCF quarterback Tayven Jackson found DJ Black for a 33-yard touchdown pass with 1:03 remaining to give the Knights a 17-10 win over Jacksonville State in the teams' season opener. To secure the win, the Knights needed a big defensive stand, stopping the Gamecocks on a 4th and 1 at the UCF 36-yard line with four minutes to play. Both UCF and Jacksonville State featured new coaching staffs and new players with the Knights adding nearly 70 players through recruiting and the transfer portal and the Gamecock s adding more than 50. The lack of rhythm for both teams was apparent as they struggled to get much going on offense. The teams did not score until they traded field goals in the third quarter.Jacksonville State seemed to have the upper hand, brea king a deadlocked defensive battle with a 10-yard touchdown by Andrew Paul early in the fourth quarter for the first touchdown of the game. UCF answered the score with a seven-play drive capped off with a 39-yard touchdown catch-and-run from Jackson to D ylan Wade to tie the game at 10 apiece. Jackson played the majority of the game at quarterback for UCF and threw for 282 yards on 17-for-24 passing. Black had three catches for 59 yards and Wade added four catches for 54 to go along with their touchdowns . Running back Myles Montgomery tallied 79 yards on 21 carries and caught three passes for 71 yards, including a 64-yard pass that set up UCF's field goal. Indiana quarterback Tayven Jackson smiled on camera when someone asked him during a Zoom call about handling the fast pace of Indiana's no-huddle offense. Transferring in from Tennessee, the program currently defining the tempo genre, Jackson is well-acq uainted with playing football at a breakneck pace. The Volunteers' combination of speed and explosiveness made them perhaps the best all-around offense in college football last season, the practice of which Jackson now brings to Bloomington. "I don't thi nk it's going to be faster than that," he said, "but I know (IU offensive coordinator Walt) Bell is an offensive genius. He's going to do everything he can to put our quarterbacks in the right positions to make plays."Still, it's not what's on the field that Jackson draws from most, as he transfers what he learned in Knoxville with him to Bloomington. One storyline worth following in Tennessee's football offseason was expected to be where Tayven Jackson would fit in at quarterback with Joe Milton III returning and with the fanfare of five-star early enrollee Nico Iamaleava. That answer came quickly. T he 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Greenwood, Indiana, has entered the NCAA transfer portal and will not battle it out with Milton and Iamaleava in the months ahead under the guidance of coach Josh Heupel and new offensive coordinator Joey Halzle, who is ente ring his third season as quarterbacks coach of the Volunteers.
