RJ Martinez ran for a touchdown and passed for another in leading Northern Arizona to a 24-10 win over Idaho State on Saturday. Martinez's 1-yard score with 11 seconds left in the first half - coming after Sean Haymon's interception that he returned 22 y ards to the Idaho State 23-yard line - gave the Lumberjacks (3-5, 2-3 Big Sky Conference) a 17-7 halftime lead. His 1-yard toss to Isaiah Gerena made it 24-7 after three quarters. Martinez finished 23-of-37 passing for 172 yards with one interception. He rushed for 29 yards. Hunter Hays was 22 of 37 for 216 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Bengals (1-7, 1-4). He added 90 yards rushing on 21 carries. OCT 10 BIG SKY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: RJ Martinez (Northern Arizona),...RJ Martinez, who won Big Sky Football Freshman of the Year honors in 2021, earned his first weekly honor for 2022 as the Lumberjack quarterback led Northern Arizona to a 31-29 home win over Cal Poly. Martinez threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns against the Mustangs, while rushing in another score on the ground. The weekly conference honor for Martinez is the second of his career. Collin Robbins made a go-ahead 40-yard field goal with 1:27 left and the Northern Arizona defense came up with a big stop to secure a 31-29 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday. NAU's scoring drive was set up by RJ Martinez's 41-yard completion to a wide op en Jamal Glaspie along the sideline. Four plays later, Robbins converted the field goal. Cal Poly used a 26-yard screen pass to Adam Garwood to get to midfield, but the drive stalled at the 39 after four straight incompletions. Martinez threw for 358 yar ds and three touchdowns for Northern Arizona (2-4, 1-2 Big Sky Conference). He also rushed for a score. Hendrix Johnson and Glaspie each had a touchdown receiving and 80-plus yards. Spencer Brasch also threw for three touchdowns but he was intercepted tw ice for Cal Poly (1-4, 0-2). RJ Martinez scored the game's only touchdown and Northern Arizona defeated Sam Houston 10-3 on Saturday night. Jhasi Wilson strip-sacked Jordan Yates and Mark Ho Ching recovered the fumble at the Sam Houston 27. Five plays later Martinez went in from 1 a nd a 7-3 lead late in the first half. Collin Robbins capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive with a 19-yard field goal to make it a seven-point lead in the third quarter. Sam Houston (0-2) got its only points on Seth Morgan's 44-yard field goal early in the sec ond quarter. Martinez threw for 214 yards with an interception. 2021 BIG SKY FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR (COACHES): RJ Martinez, QB, NAU,...NAU's RJ Martinez was selected as the league's Freshman of the Year, as the Lumberjack quarterback capped a successful first year in Flagstaff. Martinez made his first appearance for NA U in its upset at Pac-12 foe Arizona and played a total of eight games for the Lumberjacks in 2021. Martinez threw for 1,713 yards and 14 touchdowns, while rushing for nearly 200 yards and five scores on the ground. RJ Martinez threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns and Kevin Daniels ran for 177 yards and Northern Arizona beat Idaho 38-31 on Saturday. Martinez's 1-yard touchdown run with 5:17 left proved to be the game winner. The play was set up when Martinez thr ew a 21-yard completion to Coleman Owen. The Lumberjacks (4-4, 3-2 Big Sky) sealed the win when Morgan Vest intercepted Idaho's Mike Beaudry with 1:04 left. After the Vandals (2-6, 1-4) built a 21-17 first-half lead, Harrison Beemiller bolted 50 yards to give the Lumberjacks a three-point edge. They increased the margin to 10 when Martinez threw a 29-yard scoring pass to Owen not even four minutes later. Owen finished with 139 yards receiving on seven catches. Early in the fourth quarter, Beaudry threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Terez Traynor, and Logan Prescott's 29-yard field goal with 6:46 left tied it at 31. Martinez's 41-yard touchdown run stretched the Lumberjacks' lea d to 30-7 early in the third quarter. Coleman Owen caught two touchdown passes that included an 80-yarder.
