A new season and a new staff was supposed to equal a fresh start for Korey Foreman. But through two crucial weeks of USC's preseason camp, the former No. 1 overall recruit has barely had the chance to get started. An undisclosed injury has kept Foreman s idelined since last week. Before that, he missed time for what USC coach Lincoln Riley called "a prior commitment." Altogether, he's sat out most of the Trojans' camp so far - after missing the start of spring practice with an injury too - leaving minima l opportunities for him to make any sort of impression on USC's staff ahead of the season. "Is that a concern, Korey missing that? Sure," Riley said on Tuesday. "But I want to make the point, it's not because it's Korey, it's because it's a player on the USC football team." Few other USC players, though, arrived with anywhere near equal hype to Foreman, whose signing was seen as such a watershed moment for USC's football program that it was commemorated on a campus billboard. The University of Southern California will take the historic step of joining the Big Ten Conference in 2024, a move that will position USC and its student-athletes for long-term success in both athletics and academics. We are delighted to begin this new chapter in 2024."The Big Ten Conference has vote d to accept both USC and crosstown rival UCLA as full members of the conference effective August 2, 2024, enabling both schools to remain in the Pac-12 Conference for the duration of the Pac-12's existing media rights agreements. Few true freshmen are ready in Week 1 to play every snap of their first game in college. The key is to find a role in which they can get some early success before they are prepared for a larger role. That's the case even for the No. 1 recruit in the coun try. USC defensive end Korey Foreman is still learning as the Trojans approach their season opener against San Jose State next weekend. But the coaching staff does feel like Foreman will be ready to contribute in his own way. "He's still learning the def ense on base downs, first and second down, but I know he can do one thing," head coach Clay Helton said on Tuesday. "He can rush the passer on third down." This has been apparent throughout camp, when Foreman has broken through off the edge to harass qua rterbacks regularly.Even when tied up in blocks, the true freshman from Centennial High in Corona is savvy enough to get his arms up and block passes at the line of scrimmage. That's the easy part for Foreman, what comes naturally to him, though h e continues to hone those skills with outside linebacker Drake Jackson and his defensive linemates. But there are still parts of the college game where Foreman is adjusting. He's embracing the demands of USC's strength and conditioning program. He's redu ced his body fat from 13 to 10% since arriving on campus this summer. Foreman is currently listed at 10 pounds below his goal weight of 275 pounds, a target that's been difficult to achieve out of the gates. - Orange County Register

Korey Foreman and Raesjon Davis arrived at USC with high external expectations. That's what comes with the recruiting pedigree and the distinction of being Southern California guys staying at the local school. But through four days of fall camp, both pla yers are trying to fit in rather than make any bold verbal proclamations. "A lot of things you just gotta push behind you. I'm here for one reason and that's to make myself better and to win a national championship with my team," said Foreman, directing any questions of potential playing time to Coach Clay Helton. "But my own expectations of myself are just being able to work every single day, come to the facility every single day and just strive and give my best to every single rep." Davis struck a sim ilar tune, saying of his goals, "Just to get better, try and learn the playbook as fast possible, try and learn as much as I can from Coach (Todd) Orlando (defensive coordinator) to get developed as quickly as possible so I can just help the team out as much as I can." Foreman, a defensive end, arrived at USC as the nation's top recruit out of Centennial High in Corona. Davis was a four-star linebacker out of Mater Dei, and the two were the crown jewels of USC's 2021 recruiting class on the defen sive side of the ball. And they have opportunities to play as true freshmen. Though Foreman and Davis are both working with the second-team defense in practice, both the defensive line and linebacking corps have depth issues that could present opportunit ies to the young Trojans. "Excited to watch them just put the ball down and just go tackle people," Orlando said, noting their potential roles will depend on how quickly they learn the playbook. At 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, he's known as a pass rusher first, but also woks well in the running game. The former California prep star can beat a defender with quickness or power. All eyes this August will be on the nation's top recruit. Foreman's arrival should fortify a USC defensive line that already had the pieces to be one of the Pac-12's best. The question now is how USC plans to use him, and how quickly Foreman will force h is way to the top of the Trojans' defensive line rotation. Defensive line coach Vic So'oto hinted at the possibility that USC could move Foreman around as a pass rusher from Day 1, exploiting mismatches by stacking Foreman with his former Corona Centenni al teammate, Drake Jackson.
