Brady Olson, Central Connecticut, Player News

Brady Olson threw for three touchdowns and Elijah Howard ran for two scores and Central Connecticut clinched the Northeast Conference title beating Mercyhurst 35-28 on Saturday. Olson threw an 8-yard touchdown to Howard with 11:14 left in the fourth quarter after a six-play, 12-yard drive set up by the Blue Devils' defense. Eric Jackson tackled running back Brian Trobel to force a fumble that Dylan Jones recovered for the short field. Despite 10-play and nine-play drives by Mercyhurst on their last two possessions, Central Connecticut's defense managed both times to prevent the Lakers from scoring.

Adam Urena threw an 11-yard touchdown to Taylor Wright-Rawls with 2:03 left in the third quarter to bring Mercyhurst into a tie at 28. Howard ran for 163 yards on 25 carries for the Blue Devils (8-4, 6-1). Trobel ran for 166 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns for Mercyhurst (5-7, 4-3). The win marks Central Connecticut State's second consecutive FCS Championship berth. In its first season carrying a full NEC slate, Mercyhurst entered Saturday's game in contention of winning a share of the regular-season title. - AP College Football

Central Connecticut blocked two field goals in the fourth quarter, the second when Jack Stoll stopped a last-minute 18-yard attempt, and Central Connecticut remained atop the NEC with a 10-7 victory over Long Island on Saturday. The Sharks ran 31 plays on their last two possessions but were unable to tie or go ahead. With 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter, LIU took possession at its own 1-yard line and drove to the Central Connecticut 23 before being stopped on third down. Stylz Mitchell then blocked a 40-yard attempt by Will Johnson.

The LIU defense forced a three-and-out and the Sharks took possession with about 3 1/2 minutes remaining. They reached the 1-yard line before the Blue Devils broke up a couple of passes. On fourth down with 7 seconds remaining, the Sharks opted for a game-tying 3-point try that was blocked by Stoll when he broke through the right side and dove to block the kick. Brady Olson completed 16 of 29 passes for 200 yards for the Blue Devils (6-3, 4-0). He threw one touchdown pass and was intercepted once. Luca Stanzani was 21-of-33 passing for 127 yards for the Sharks (3-6, 1-3). The Blue Devils led 3-0 at halftime, then LIU opened the second half with a 16-play drive that was capped by Stanzani's 3-yard touchdown pass to O'Shawn Ross Jr. for a 7-3 lead. Central Connecticut made it 10-7 two plays later when Donovan Wadley hauled in a 51-yard touchdown pass from Olson. - AP College Football

Devon Anderson's 55-yard interception return for a touchdown highlighted a dominant defensive effort as Central Connecticut defeated Robert Morris 24-12 on Saturday. Brady Olson threw for 187 yards and a touchdown, and Elijah Howard rushed for 131 yards and a score for the Blue Devils (4-3, 2-0 NEC), who built a 14-0 first-quarter lead and never trailed. Olson connected with Donovan Wadley on a 34-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, then Howard broke a 29-yard run less than five minutes later. Anderson's interception return early in the third stretched the lead to 21-0 and Jack Hennessey's 35-yard field goal in the fourth sealed it.

Robert Morris (1-5, 0-1) broke through in the final quarter when backup quarterback Jake Wolfe hit Chaz Middleton for a 6-yard touchdown, followed by Donta Whack's 7-yard scoring run on the next drive. The Colonials' two failed conversions kept it a two-score game. The Blue Devils' defense limited Robert Morris to 75 rushing yards and had two interceptions. Central Connecticut finished with 350 total yards and held the ball for nearly 31 minutes.   WEEK 6 NEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brady Olson, Central Connecticut, Quarterback, Senior, 6-4, 205 lbs., Bellingham, MA/Milford (UMass), Week 6 Stats: 28-for-40, 323 passing yards, 4 passing touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 58 rushing yards, 6 carries, 1 rushing TD,...Olson shredded Sacred Heart's defense to the tune of a career-high 323 passing yards and four touchdown throws, including a game-clinching 25-yard pass to reigning NEC Offensive Player of the Year Elijah Howard in overtime, on Saturday. The senior was running on all cylinders in the 42-35 triumph, accounting for each of the Blue Devils' five touchdowns after adding a rushing score with 2:54 left to play in the fourth quarter. Most impressively, Olson, who completed 28-of-40 passes and had a career-best 58 rushing yards on six carries to his count, did not commit a turnover for the fifth time this season.

His 300-passing yard outing was the first for a Blue Devil since current CFL quarterback Jake Dolegala threw for 341 against Robert Morris on Oct. 16, 2018. A native of Bellingham, MA, Olson boasts the league's best touchdown/interception ratio with 11 touchdown throws and just one pick in six games. He is averaging 213.0 passing yards per game to rank third in the conference, while his 11 touchdown passes are good for third in the circuit. This is Olson's first NEC/Atlantic Tomorrow's Office Offensive Player of the Week honor, and the first for a Blue Devil quarterback since Aaron Winchester was a three-time recipient of the award in 2019. - NEC Football
