Purdue running back Devin Mockobee will miss the rest of his final college season after undergoing ankle surgery late last week, coach Barry Odom announced Monday. Mockobee finishes his career as the fourth-leading rusher in Boilermakers history with 2,9 87 yards, trailing Mike Alstott, Kory Sheets and Otis Armstrong, a College Football Hall of Famer. Mockobee also ranks in the school's top 10 in carries with 630 and career 100-yard games with nine. Odom said Mockobee injured his ankle late in an Oct. 25 loss to Rutgers. He was ruled out of last weekend's 21-16 loss at No. 21 Michigan following Friday's surgery. "We were hoping we would get a little bit better news after they did that procedure on his ankle, but unfortunately, the injury he sustained, h e's played his last game here," Odom said. "I sure hate that because he is such a wonderful young man, a great leader of this program and a great representative of Purdue University. The things he poured into this program and university since I've been h ere, he will go down as one of the really enjoyable, great guys I've had a chance to coach. We'll be connected forever, and I know this place means a lot to him." Losing this season's leading rusher couldn't come at a worse time for the Boilermakers (2-7 , 0-6 Big Ten).They are mired in a six-game losing streak and remain one of four winless teams in league play. Purdue's next chance to snap a school-record 15-game losing streak in conference games comes Saturday when it hosts No. 1 Ohio State (8- 0, 5-0). Antonio Harris started against Michigan then rotated with Malachi Thomas. Harris finished with 11 carries for 54 yards and one touchdown while Thomas had 15 carries for 68 yards. Malachi Singleton, a quarterback, also finished with six carries f or 24 yards. Odom did not say whether he would follow a similar game plan against the Buckeyes. Mockobee joined the Boilermakers as a walk-on from Boonville, Indiana, but quickly emerged as their top rusher in 2022. He set school freshman records by rush ing for 968 yards and posting four 100-yard games while scoring nine times for the Big Ten West Division champions. After losing the Big Ten championship game to the Wolverines, first-time head coach Ryan Walters gave the 6-foot, 202-pound rusher a schol arship. - AP College Football

Devin Mockobee rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns, Ryan Browne passed for two scores, and Purdue limited Southern Illinois to a field goal in the last three quarters in a 34-17 home triumph on Saturday. Both of Mockobee's 1-yard scores were on direc t snaps in the Wildcat formation as the senior's first TD pushed Purdue's lead to 24-14 just before halftime and his second touchdown made it 34-14 early in the fourth quarter. "We know that we're going to have to be a running team," Purdue coach Barry O dom said. "Devin had a big workload tonight. He continues to make plays. He's a tough kid, a great competitor."It was the first multi-score game of Mockobee's career. "It's a great feeling obviously," Mockobee said of Purdue (2-0) doubling its win total from last year. "When you get to a point where you're winning games, it's always better to win ‘em than lose 'em." Each of Browne's scoring passes tied the game in the opening quarter as he hit Armad Branch on a 13-yard play and Nitro Tuttle on a 29-yard slant pass. 2023 ALL-BIG TEN HONORABLE MENTION: Devin Mockobee,...Despite sharing the workload in the backfield, Mockobee and Tyrone Tracy were two of the best running backs in the Big Ten this season. The pair of Boilermakers were the only teammates in the Big Ten to rush for at least 500 yards in conference play. Mockobee racked up 625 yards in B1G games, while Tracy was close behind with 624 to rank fourth and sixth respectively. When Ryan Walters was a high school quarterback, he wanted to replicate Drew Brees' trailblazing career path. Now, Brees seems to be following Walters' lead. One day after the 36-year-old Walters was introduced as Purdue's new coach, athletic director Mi ke Bobinski announced Brees would return to the campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, as an assistant coach to help the Boilermakers prepare for their Jan. 2 Citrus Bowl game against No. 17 LSU. "I am extremely excited to work with our team over the next fe w weeks as we prepare for the Citrus Bowl," Brees said in a statement. "I see it not only as an opportunity to coach and mentor this group of young men but to represent all the former Purdue players."Bobinski said Brees will be a countable assista nt coach under NCAA rules, allowing him to work with players on the field and help on the recruiting circuit, even though the job is, for now, temporary. Brees is one of the most recognizable members of the "Cradle of Quarterbacks," leading the Boilermak ers to their last Big Ten title in 2000 before embarking on a record-breaking NFL career with the Chargers and New Orleans Saints.
