Freshman Clay Millen threw two touchdown passes and Colorado State shut out New Mexico 17-0 to close out the regular season on Friday. It was Colorado State's first shutout since beating Fresno State 37-0 in 2016. Prior to that, the Rams' last shutout ca me in 1997 - a 63-0 victory over Hawaii. The Rams (3-9, 3-5 Mountain West Conference), in their first season under Jay Norvell, scored 17 points in each of their three wins. Neither team scored until Millen threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to freshman Just us Ross-Simmons with 3:34 left in the second quarter, giving Colorado State (3-9, 3-5 Mountain West Conference) a 7-0 lead at halftime. The two teams combined for just 211 yards of offense before intermission. The Rams' second score was set up by a third -quarter sack. Ayden Hector got to New Mexico quarterback C.J. Montes, forcing a fumble that Grady Kelly recovered at the Lobos' 18-yard line.New Mexico (2-10, 0-8) stuffed three straight runs and CSU settled for Michael Boyle's 23-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead with six seconds left in the quarter. Millen fired a 41-yard scoring strike to Tory Horton with 6:04 left to play to finish off the victory. Millen completed 19 of 24 passes for 214 yards. Horton had 10 receptions for 131 yards. The Rams held New Mexico to 133 yards of offense. Coming into the game, New Mexico's offense ranked last among FBS teams in total yards and Colorado State was last in scoring. The Lobos were ahead of only the Rams in third-down conversions. UNM was last in first downs and Colorado State was last in red-zone offense. The Rams lead the series 44-25 and have beaten the Lobos 11 straight times. - Colorado State/AP College Football

The Rams are 11-29 over the past four seasons and were 7-6 each of the three years before that. Adazzio lasted just two seasons before Parker, a former All-American swimmer at Michigan who was a senior associate athletic director at the school from 2003 to 2011, pried Norvell from a conference foe. Norvell has been coaching since 1986, once his playing career at Iowa ended. He's had stops in the Big Ten, Big 12, and Pac-12 with a six-year NFL stint in the middle. Nevada was his first head job. He reache d four bowl games and went 33-26 over five seasons, culminating with an 8-4 regular-season record last year.He brought his Air Raid offense and several Nevada transfers with him to Fort Collins. Quarterback Clay Millen was a four-star recruit acco rding to 247Sports, and though he only threw two passes as a true freshman last season, early reviews are promising. He figures to be Colorado State's starter. "Clay is a really smart player. He's kind of your thinking man's quarterback," Norvell said af ter the spring game, per the Denver Post. "He understands how to use the offense and he's just really starting to feel comfortable playing." - Ann Arbor News

Colorado State quarterback Clay Millen dropped back to pass and unloaded a perfect spiral more than 50 yards down the sideline. Spring game touchdowns don't count for much. But it appears the deep ball, finally, is alive and well for the new-look Rams. M illen's long bomb to wide receiver Tory Horton was a breath of fresh air on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Canvas Stadium. "I knew I had a little bit of wind at my back," Millen said. "My mindset was literally to just try to underthrow it by like two y ards and let the wind kind of push it a little bit. It happened to work out really well. I don't think I've played in as much wind as I had right there." Millen - a four-star recruit (via 247Sports) from Snoqualmie, Wash. - appeared in only two games as a true freshman last season at Nevada. He followed Jay Norvell to Fort Collins when he took the CSU head coaching job and Millen entered spring camp as the presumed QB1.It's no surprise when you consider the roster Norvell inherited. Former starti ng quarterback Todd Centeio transferred to FCS James Madison and 2021 signee Evan Olaes is coming off a redshirt year. But Millen still needed to earn the trust of new teammates and coaches in establishing a leadership role with the Rams. "Clay is a real ly smart player. He's kind of your thinking man's quarterback," Norvell said. "He understands how to use the offense and he's just really starting to feel comfortable playing." Millen took another step forward in the spring game completing 22 of 33 passe s for 292 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. - Denver Post
