Jaylen Johnson, Ohio, Player News

Memphis football made another splash in the transfer portal over the weekend by adding a player who could provide a nice boost to its secondary. Defensive back Jaylen Johnson, who spent the past two seasons at Ohio State, announced on social media Sunday that he will be transferring to Memphis. He will have three years of eligibility left when he arrives on campus. Johnson, who was listed as a safety at Ohio State, missed the entire 2021 season after tearing his ACL and appeared in just one game for the Buckeyes as a redshirt freshman this season.Listed at 6-foot-1 and 211 pounds, Johnson was considered a three-star recruit out of La Salle High School in Cincinnati. Memphis defensive coordinator Matt Barnes was Johnson's position coach during hi s first year at Ohio State. Johnson will likely be in the mix with several others to take over the starting safety spot that's open at Memphis due to the graduation of team captain Quindell Johnson. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

For the second straight season, a torn anterior cruciate ligament will prematurely end the freshman season of one of Ohio State football's Bullet prospects. Lettermen Row reported Wednesday that freshman defensive back Jaylen Johnson suffered a torn ACL during preseason camp and will miss the 2021 season. Cleveland.com could not immediately confirm the report. Johnson, a three-star prospect from Cincinnati ranked No. 414 in the 247 Sports composite of the 2021 class, was not expected to play many snaps this season. However, he was recruited to potentially develop at the hybrid Bullet position that has taken the place of the Sam linebacker in Ohio State's base defensive package. Kourt Williams suffered a torn ACL during the 2020 preseason and only retur ned to full practice during the current preseason camp. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
