Kyron Drones threw a touchdown pass in the second overtime before running for the two-point conversion and Virginia Tech rallied last in a 42-34 victory over California on Friday night. Drones hit Takye Heath for a 7-yard touchdown to begin the second OT for Virginia Tech (3-5, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), and then ran it in on the mandatory two-point try for an eight-point advantage. True freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw four straight incompletions for California (5-3, 2-2) to end it. "We kne w it was going to take all three phases to get it done," Virginia Tech interim coach Philip Montgomery said. "In the second half, our guys continued to battle, continued to fight, and they were resilient all game long. I just couldn't be more proud of ou r football team and our coaching staff, with the way they've welded together and stayed together. "Boy, what a big win. The joy in that locker room was unbelievable. The good Lord has blessed us in that way, and I'm just really proud of this team and how hard they fought tonight and how hard they've been fighting." Virginia Tech's John Love and Cal's Chase Meyer both missed go-ahead field goals in the final 62 seconds to force overtime.Sagapolutele connected with Mason Mini for a 25-yard score on the first play of OT to give Cal the lead. Drones scored on a 17-yard run to tie it. Drones completed 9 of 18 passes for 119 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Marcellous Hawkins rushed 21 times for 167 yards and Drones carried 21 times fo r 137 and two scores. Drones connected with Ayden Greene for a 27-yard touchdown and Love added a 46-yard field goal for a 10-3 lead after one quarter. Another Meyer field goal and two short touchdown runs by Kendrick Raphael gave the Golden Bears a 20-p oint run and a 10-point lead at halftime. Love kicked a 52-yard field goal and Drones fired a 44-yard scoring strike to Heath to tie it 20-all heading to the fourth. Kyron Drones threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for two scores to lead Virginia Tech to a 38-6 victory over Wofford on Saturday. Drones completed 27 of 32 passes for the Hokies (1-3), who were playing their first game since the univer sity administration fired coach Brent Pry on Sept. 14. Philip Montgomery, the Hokies' offensive coordinator, is serving as the head coach for the remainder of the season.The Hokies jumped out to a 21-0 first-half lead and never looked back against the FCS Terriers (0-4). Drones completed passes to seven receivers in the first half - 11 for the game - and threw touchdown passes of 19 yards to Devin Alves and 18 yards to Ayden Greene on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. Behind Drones, who scored on two short runs in the second half, the Hokies finished with a season-high 461 yards. Former Baylor quarterback Kyron Drones announced Monday that he has committed to Virginia Tech. Following Baylor's season-ending 38-27 loss to Texas, Drones had announced that he was entering the transfer portal but was keeping his options open to return to Baylor. The redshirt freshman played sparingly behind starter Blake Shapen this season as he hit 14 of 23 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 49 yards and two scores in five games. - Waco Tribune Herald

Baylor redshirt freshman quarterback Kyron Drones announced Wednesday that he's entering the NCAA transfer portal. However, Drones said there's a possibility he could return to Baylor after exploring his options. "These past two years were a blessing, bu t that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal with three years left of eligibility," Drones said. "I will explore my options with the possibility of coming back to Baylor." Playing behind sophomore Blake Shapen, Drones saw limited action this season as he completed 14 of 23 passes for 219 yards with a touchdown and an interception while running eight times for 49 yards and two scores.
