Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton took a big hit on the run and was ruled out of the 17th-ranked Red Raiders' game against No. 16 Utah on Saturday. Morton's helmet slammed on the turf after he slid head first into contact with Utah linebacker Johnatha n Hall during his team's opening drive of the third quarter. Officials reviewed the play for targeting but deemed it a clean hit by Hall.A member of the Texas Tech medical staff escorted Morton to the locker room to be evaluated for a potential co ncussion. Backup quarterback Will Hammond took over for Morton on the Red Raiders' next drive. Morton exited for a couple of plays in the first half after getting shaken up on a hard hit from Utah defensive end John Henry Daley. He threw for 142 yards wi th two interceptions on 12-of-19 passing. Texas Tech led 10-3 when he was ruled out. Morton entered Saturday having passed for 923 yards and 11 touchdowns in his first three games. - AP College Football

Behren Morton threw for 442 yards and four touchdowns, J'Koby Williams had a scoring catch and a run and No. 21 Texas Tech beat Oregon State 45-14 on Saturday night in a weather-delayed game. Play was stopped for 2 1/2 hours just 2 1/2 minutes into the g ame. Cameron Dickey added a short TD run to help the Red Raiders improve to 3-0 for the first time in coach Joey McGuire's four seasons. "I do think we have a really good football team, but I don't think we've come close to how good we can be,” McGuire said. "We're just going to try to keep building every single week. Challenge these guys. They feel it, too.”Oregon State's Maalik Murphy threw touchdown passes in the waning minutes to Bryce Caufield and Karson Boschma. The Beavers are 0-3 for the first time since 2011. "The disappointing thing was, I thought we didn't play with much effort or willingness to be physical,” Beavers coach Trent Bray said. "That's my fault. I've allowed it to happen. Got to get it fixed.” Morton's TD passes we re 38 yards to Coy Eakin, 61 yards to Caleb Douglas, 30 yards to Williams and 23 yards to Terrance Carter. Tech led 28-0 at halftime, 45-0 through three periods and outgained Oregon State 513 yards to 282. Eakin's score came on the third play after play resumed following the delay. Behren Morton threw for three touchdowns, big defensive tackle Skyler Gill-Howard returned an interception 55 yards for a score and No. 24 Texas Tech blew out another overmatched opponent, beating Kent State 62-14 on Saturday. Cameron Dickey had two rush ing TDs and Reggie Virgil added two receiving scores as the Red Raiders (2-0) led 48-0 at halftime, one point better than the margin at the break a week ago in a 67-7 victory over FCS member Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Morton started Saturday after leaving the victory over Pine Bluff in the second quarter with what coach Joey McGuire described as a hyperextended knee. Morton, who had been listed as questionable, was 18 of 26 for 258 yards while playing only the first half.Dru DeShields threw for a touch down and ran for a score in the fourth quarter for the Golden Flashes (1-1), who ended a 21-game losing streak with a 21-17 victory over Merrimack in their opener. Kent State had negative total yards until Gavin Garcia ran 38 yards on a screen pass on it s sixth possession early in the second quarter. Two plays later, Gill-Howard took his interception the other way for a 38-0 lead. The 290-pounder from Northern Illinois, part of Texas Tech's highly touted transfer class, made the catch behind the line of scrimmage and scored untouched after Lee Hunter applied quick pressure and A.J. Behren Morton threw for 201 yards and four touchdowns before exiting the game following a sack in the second quarter, and No. 23 Texas Tech routed overmatched FCS member Arkansas-Pine Bluff 67-7 in the opener for both teams Saturday night. The Red Raider s led 47-0 at halftime coming off their first preseason Top 25 ranking since 2008, and the game was shortened to a pair of 8-minute quarters following a 90-minute weather delay that hit at the break. Morton came up limping after Tayvon Hardwick came off the edge and hit Morton low, tweaking the senior's lower right leg. Hardwick was penalized for roughing the passer. Morton took the next snap and handed off to J'Koby Williams, who ran 5 yards for a touchdown and a 37-0 lead.Morton and coach Joey McGuire then conferred with the medical staff, and Morton left the field. He was still in uniform when he returned to the sideline before halftime, and coach Joey McGuire said in a radio interview at the break that Morton was OK. He completed 16 of 18 pa sses. Will Hammond replaced Morton and led two more scoring drives as the Red Raiders put up points all eight times they had the ball before halftime with six touchdowns and two field goals. OCT 24 BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Texas Tech's Behren Morton threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start to lead Texas Tech to a 48-10 win over West Virginia. It was the second-consecutive 300-yard performance for Morton, who beca me just the second Red Raider all-time to throw for 300 yards against Big 12 foes in his first two career starts. Morton, who woke up ill Saturday morning before the game, also rushed for 17 yards in the win, helping the Red Raiders convert 6-of-7 fourth down attempts in the process. Morton was responsible for five of those conversions on his own with four passing completions and one rushing. He is one of only two FBS freshmen to throw for at least 300 yards in multiple games this year as he has totaled 704 yards through the air over the last two games. Behind Morton, the Red Raiders secured their largest margin of victory all-time in the series with West Virginia.
