So, the inevitable is now a reality. Bryce Young's time at Alabama is over and so the conversation begins. The 2023 Alabama quarterback competition is on. It's been a while since the Crimson Tide had a real battle for QB1 and it's certainly the first sin ce transfer rules were loosened so the dynamic will be somewhat different than in the past. That said, two quarterbacks -- Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson -- with a combined 65 collegiate passing attempts, are set to be joined by two signees from the 2023 cl ass. The transfer portal, of course, is the wildcard added to the mix -- new since Tua Tagovailoa beat Jalen Hurts for the Alabama starting gig entering the 2018 season. That makes handicapping the race a little more complicated but the next man up for t he 2022 season was Jalen Milroe. A redshirt freshman, the Katy, Texas product took all the meaningful snaps after Young's shoulder injury at Arkansas. That included a start against Texas A&M in a wild ride of big plays and costly turnovers.Milroe spoke with AL.com for a few minutes in the locker room after the 45-20 Sugar Bowl win over Kansas State about the season that ended and the offseason to come. Simpson said he was unavailable when approached in the locker room open for 20 minutes to repor ters. Milroe spoke about the emotional moment in the fourth quarter of the bowl game when he replaced Young after the game was in hand. "Yeah, it was definitely a moment for both of us," Milroe said. "Just to have that moment with him. It was definitely teary eyes, for sure. That's my brother. We had a relationship beyond football so just to have that moment with him, that one final time, it meant a lot to me." The conversation shifted to the offseason. His goal is simple. "Overall, just get 1% better e ach and every day," Milroe said. "Just collab with the team, find our identity, come together as a team and just build on each day we have together." - Birmingham News

Jalen Milroe threw for three touchdowns in his first start and No. 1 Alabama made a final goal-line stand to escape with a 24-20 victory over Texas A&M on Saturday night in a battle of backup quarterbacks. Playing without injured Heisman Trophy winner Br yce Young, the Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) needed two late stops from Will Anderson Jr. and the defense. They got them, just barely, to survive four turnovers and two missed field goals. Haynes King, subbing for injured starter Max Jo hnson, drove the Aggies (3-2, 1-2) 69 yards in the final 1:50 with big passes to Evan Stewart and Moose Muhammad III. Jordan Battle appeared to end the threat with an interception in the end zone, but Brian Branch was flagged for pass interference. That set up one final shot from the 2 with three seconds left, but King's pass to Stewart fell incomplete.Milroe passed for 111 yards and ran for 183, but also threw an interception and lost two fumbles. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 159 yards after gaining mos t of his 206 after Young's shoulder injury early against Arkansas. Subbing for an injured Max Johnson (throwing hand), King completed 25 of 46 passes for 253 yards and a pair of touchdowns with an interception. Ultimately, Alabama got a double measure of revenge against the Aggies and coach Jimbo Fisher. Another unranked Texas A&M team handed Alabama its only regular-season loss last year, then Fisher went no-holds barred in response to Nick Saban's comments that the Aggies bought their top recruiting c lass with NIL money. Once again, the Aggies hung ever so close with the top team, a 23 1/2-point favorite. - Alabama/AP College Football

There's no quarterback battle this season. Young, as the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, has that spot locked down. So the spring game offered a chance to see the two players who are competing to be Young's backup. Milroe showed why there has been buzz a round his name this offseason. In his second year with the program, Milroe flashed big-play, highlight-reel ability as he ran the White team. The touchdown he threw on a near-perfect deep ball to Christian Leary in the second quarter for 52 yards is easy to spot, but Milroe also made some other plays that show why he could be a problem for defenses. On the first drive, he froze a defender in the turf and looked to have used that cut to score a short touchdown run, but the officials said he was tou ched. Quarterbacks only had to be touched for the play to be over in the spring game. Nonetheless, it showed his athletic ability. He displayed a similar dangerous move when he ran for 16 yards while making a defender eat the turf as he got stuck behind Milroe. He also had a 22-yard run late in the game. Milroe wasn't perfect. He threw an interception into coverage and could have been more accurate with some of his passes. But overall, Milroe showed why he could have a bright future with Alabama. - Mont gomery Advertiser
