Aveon Smith threw a late 34-yard touchdown pass to Miles Marshall and Miami (Ohio) beat Ball State 18-17 on Tuesday night in a Red Bird Rivalry game with bowl eligibility on the line. Both teams entered the game with 5-6 records, needing a win to qualify for a postseason bowl game. Smith scored on an 18-yard run with 6:12 left to play, but Miami trailed 17-12 after he threw incomplete on the two-point conversion.

Carson Steele carried eight straight times for Ball State, gaining 22 yards before the RedHawks stuffed him on fourth-and-1 and Miami took over at the Cardinals' 47-yard line with 3:05 remaining. Smith picked up a first down with a third-down pass to Jalen Walker and then hit Marshall on third-and-10 for the go-ahead score with 1:42 to go. Smith threw incomplete on the two-point try and Miami led 18-17. Brian Ogwu picked off John Paddock in the final minute to preserve the RedHawks' win. - Miami OH/AP College Football

  11/16/22 - QB Aveon SmithrJr/2026, Transfer, 6-1, 210 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Aveon Smith threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Mac Hippenhammer and added two TD runs about 4 minutes apart that gave Miami (Ohio) the lead for good just before halftime as the Redhawks beat Northern Illinois 29-23 in the snow Wednesday night. Smith completed 11 of 23 passes for 180 yards and ran for 105 yards on 20 carries for Miami (5-6, 3-4 Mid-American Conference). John Richardson kicked a 31-yard field goal and Nevan Cremascoli threw a 15-yard TD pass to Liam Soraghan that gave Northern Illinois (3-8, 2-5) a 10-0 lead with 4:39 left in the first quarter.

The Redhawks ensuing drive stalled at midfield and Dom Dzioban's 47-yard punt pinned NIU at its own 3 and two plays later Harrison Waylee fumbled the ball and kicked it out of the end zone for a touchback that got Miami on the scoreboard less than 3 minutes later. Smith had four carries for 28 yards - including a 10-yard TD run - and went 1-for-1 passing for 13 yards on a six-play, 49-yard drive that made it 10-9 with 4:39 left in the second quarter and, after the Huskies went three-and-out, Tom Foley's punt was blocked and went just 17 yards, giving Miami the ball at its own 49 and six plays later Smitch scored on a 15-yard run to make it 16-10 at halftime. - Miami (Ohio)/AP College Football

The Miami Redhawks, who face Cincinnati Saturday, are led offensively by quarterback Aveon Smith. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound redshirt freshman made his first career start last week after longtime starter Brett Gabbert suffered an injury late in the opener against Kentucky. Smith completed 14 of 22 passes for 155 yards and became the first Miami quarterback to throw at least three touchdowns in his first career start since Andrew Hendrix in 2014. The RedHawks have several options in the backfield, including running back Keyon Mozee. The 5-foot-7, 179-pound sophomore led Miami with 80 yards on 15 carries against the Bearcats last season. - Cincinnati Enquirer
