Ken Seals, Texas Christian, Player News

Vanderbilt football coach Clark Lea named Ken Seals starting quarterback Tuesday for the Commodores' opening game. Seals, last year's starter, set a school freshman passing record with 1,928 yards and a 64.6% completion percentage. He threw 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Seals is much more a pocket passer than a dual threat, with a long of 13 yards rushing last year. It is likely that both Seals and Mike Wright will be used in some capacity, just as they were last year. "We're proud of both those guys...We were allowing for those guys to establish themselves and build chemistry within the offense," Lea said. "But both quarterbacks will play. Mike Wright is...a super talented player and we're excited to see what kind of role he will carve out." Lea said that Wright had earned the right to play snaps in the offense and that the team didn't want to relegate him to a situational role. - Tennessean

Vanderbilt started freshman Ken Seals at quarterback against No. 11 Texas A&M in the season opener Saturday. Seals became the eighth true freshman to start at quarterback for Vanderbilt since the NCAA changed first-year eligibility rules in 1972. The others include Kyle Shurmur (vs. Missouri 2015), Wade Freebeck (vs. UMass, 2014), David Wallace (vs. Alabama, 1998), Kenny Simon (vs. Alabama, 1993), Tim Richardson (at Ole Miss, 1985), John Gromos (at Iowa State, 1985) and Mike Wright (vs. Florida, 1975). Seven of the eight made their first start against an SEC team.

Seals won the job in a competition with three other new quarterbacks, including junior college transfers Danny Clark and Jeremy Moussa and freshman Mike Wright. Seals' his first college game was near his hometown of Azle, Texas. He was a three-star signee in the 2020 recruiting class after passing for 5,714 yards and 53 touchdowns at Weatherford (Texas) High School. Seals, a 6-foot-3, 218-pounder, enrolled at Vanderbilt in January and got first-team reps before spring practice was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. - The Tennessean
