Western Michigan has hired Louisville offensive coordinator Lance Taylor to lead its football program. Athletic director Dan Bartholomae made the announcement Thursday. The 41-year-old Taylor coached running backs for three seasons each at Notre Dame and Stanford. He was also an assistant at Appalachian State and with the NFL's Carolina Panthers and New York Jets. Alabama coach Nick Saban gave Taylor his start in coaching as a graduate assistant in 2007. Taylor walked on the Crimson Tide's team in 1999 and later earned a scholarship as a receiver and special teams captain for former coach Mike Shula. Taylor, who is from Mount Vernon, Alabama, played professionally in the Arena Football League for the Colorado Crush and Columbus Destroyers. - AP College Football

Jack Salopek threw for three touchdowns and Western Michigan pulled away early in a 44-7 victory over New Hampshire on Saturday night. Western Michigan (2-3) scored on four of its first five possessions in taking a 28-7 halftime lead. Two first-quarter scores came on pass plays of 75 and 76 yards, the first to a wide-open Corey Crooms from Salopek off a flea ficker on the Broncos' first play, and the second on a screen to Sean Tyler.

Salopek finished 13-of-23 passing for 252 yards with an interception. Crooms had 109 yards on five catches. La'Darius Jefferson and Tyler added rushing touchdowns. Joshua Burgett had a 3-yard reception for a score. Western Michigan's Delano Ware returned an interception 97 yards for a touchdown for the game's final points. The Broncos had four takeaways, 17 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Max Brosmer threw for 161 yards for UNH (3-2), including a 26-yard score to Dylan Laube. - Western Michigan/AP College Football

After losing its starting quarterback and virtually all pass catchers from the 2021 season, there is a lot of uncertainty as to what Western Michigan's offense will look like under first-year coordinator Jeff Thorne. And with that uncertainty comes skepticism about how the Broncos will fare in head coach Tim Lester's sixth season at the helm. Jack Salopek, last year's backup quarterback, exited spring ball with a slight edge over dual-threat signal caller Mareyohn Hrabowski and Alabama transfer Stone Hollenbach, and the redshirt freshman out of Pennsylvania took nearly all of the first-team reps on Thursday, continuing his trajectory for the starting job in Week 1.

"He had a great spring, great summer, and I've told everybody, the race just began today, but he's in the poll position," Lester said. "He got the most reps with the 1s. The back-shoulder one he threw down the sideline was impressive. I thought he made good decisions, but we have to watch the film." WMU football. Salopek, 6-1, 185, showed enough zip to deliver a strike across the field on an out route, good placement on a seam route to tight end Austin Hence and good touch on a back-shoulder fade to Wisconsin transfer A.J. Abbott, who made a sliding catch between defenders against a WMU zone. - Kalamazoo Gazette
