Brendon Lewis and Patrick Garwo III accounted for two touchdowns apiece and Nevada held off Troy 28-26 on Saturday night. Troy's Goose Crowder threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Devonte Ross with 21 seconds left to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive, but Crow der was stuffed on his two-point conversion run attempt. Lewis was 17-of-20 passing for 158 yards with two touchdown passes. Garwo finished with 58 yards rushing and a pair of scores. Savion Red added 135 yards rushing on 11 carries for Nevada (1-1), whi ch lost to SMU 29-24 in its season opener.Red broke loose on a 69-yard run to the Troy 6-yard line before Garwo bullied into the endzone on a 1-yard run two plays later, tying the game 14-all early in the third quarter. Garwo made it 21-17 on a 22 -yard touchdown run with 3:20 remaining in the third. Lewis tossed a 7-yard TD pass to Marcus Bellon that stretched the Wolf Pack's lead to 28-17 early in the fourth quarter. Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in, or planning to be to enter the transfer portal as of Dec. 1 is Colorado's Brendon Lewis: He started all 12 games last season as a redshirt freshman, then played in two games this season. He opened the season as the starter, didn't play at all in the second game, played as a backup in the third game and that was it. Colorado's former starting quarterback has put his name into the NCAA transfer portal. On Tuesday, sophomore Brendon Lewis announced that he has decided to leave CU. Lewis was the opening day starter on Sept. 2 against TCU, but had slipped to third on th e depth chart in recent weeks. A third-year sophomore from Melissa, Tex., Lewis completed 170-of-291 passes (58.4%) for 1,727 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions in his career with the Buffs, while adding 304 yards and three touchdowns on the gr ound. He finishes his CU career with 156 consecutive passes without an interception - the second-longest streak in Buffs' history. Lewis made his CU debut in the 2020 Alamo Bowl, coming off the bench in the Buffs' 55-23 loss to Texas. When asked about positives from the 2021 season, Colorado quarterback Brendon Lewis had to think for a few seconds. "Towards the end of the season, we showed improvement and started moving the ball," he said, before quickly shifting to thoughts of the up coming season. "We're gonna see a lot more of that this year. (Offensive coordinator Mike) Sanford has done a great job and made a new offense for everybody so it's going to be really fun." It's understandable that Lewis wouldn't dwell too much on the 20 21 season, because it was filled with growing pains. As a freshman, first-year starter, Lewis played behind a struggling offensive line and wound up at or near the bottom of the Pac-12 in passer rating, completion percentage and yards per game as the Buf faloes went 4-8 (3-6 Pac-12).There were highlights, including leading the Buffs to an overtime win against Oregon State and scoring the deciding touchdown in a home win against Washington. Both of those came in November. "The best part of that is that he played for 12 games for us last year," head coach Karl Dorrell said. Lewis, who is competing to keep his starting job, has spent the past eight months learning from that experience. "Watching a lot of film," he said of his offseason. "When we lea rned the new offense with coach Sanford, we went back and I tried to visualize the plays that he would call, the looks that he would see from last season. So we did a lot of that. A lot of fine tweaking on some mechanical things, lower body-type stuff, a lot of grinding. It was really fun." With the season opener still seven weeks away, Colorado head football coach Karl Dorrell isn't naming a starting quarterback yet. He made it clear Wednesday, however, that it's Brendon Lewis' job to lose. Speaking at a media roundtable at Colorado Nation al Golf Club, Dorrell said the competition to start will be ongoing but, "B-Lew is in the driver's seat. "He was our starter a year ago. We can't discredit that. I mean, someone's gonna have to beat him out. That's the flat truth." Rick George says remai ning Pac-12 members 'staying aligned' amid conference realignment Lewis, now a sophomore, started all 12 games in 2021, but struggled at times. He was 11th in the Pac-12 in passer rating (118.82), and 12th in completion percentage (58.0) and passing yard s per game (128.3).Overall, he threw for 1,540 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also threw just three interceptions - the lowest total among the starters in the conference. Lewis displayed his toughness, fighting through a year in which the offensive l ine struggled. He was sacked 31 times but still ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns. "He knows he's got a job to hang on to and he knows he's got to continue to get better," Dorrell said. "And he knows that there's people nipping at his heels, so it's g reat competition, but he's in the driver's seat." - Daily Camera

The Colorado Buffaloes foiled the state's first family of football. Freshman quarterback Brendon Lewis and the rest of the Buffs rumbled past Northern Colorado 35-7 Friday night, spoiling former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey's college head coaching debu t. "I was excited to coach," said McCaffrey, who coached at powerhouse Valor Christian High School from 2018-19 before he was hired at UNC 20 months ago. "Again, the results certainly weren't what we were hoping for. But I'd rather play football and lose than not play football." McCaffrey, whose Bears (0-1) sat out 2020 because of the pandemic, had one son - Max - with him on the sideline serving as his offensive coordinator and another - Dylan, a transfer from Michigan - at quarterback. It was the Bear s' defensive wrinkles that befuddled the Buffs early on before Colorado deciphered the schemes and turned a 14-0 halftime lead into a runaway. "I do take my hat off to Coach McCaffrey and that team that he's coaching," Colorado coach Karl Dorrell said. " For him not to have a season-and a-half and for them to play the way they did, I thought they fought really, really hard." Colorado's offense is loaded with potential weapons for next season, and Brendon Lewis is doing what he can to be the guy getting the ball in their hands. After a strong spring, the freshman quarterback said he's eager to take his game up another notch t his summer. "I'm going to continue to work on my accuracy and I'm going to continue to get bigger, faster and stronger because I know that will benefit my game greatly," Lewis said after the Buffs' spring showcase on April 30. "Mainly my accuracy, footwo rk, lower body. I'm going to just keep in the offense every day so when we come back like I said, it's time to work, it's time to win some games."After graduating early from Melissa (Texas) High School and enrolling at CU in January of 2020, Lewis didn't get the benefit of spring practices because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, the season got pushed back and shortened, leaving the Buffs with minimal time to get ready for the season. Because he was behind the others, Lewis was never really in the competition to start, as senior Sam Noyer beat out junior Tyler Lytle. More than three months after playing in the Valero Alamo Bowl, the Colorado freshman is still riding off the confidence gained from that night. With senior Sam Noyer out because of offseason shoulder surgery, Lewis has spent this spring running with the first-team offense as he competes to be the starting quarterback in the fall. "Brendon Lewis is so much further ahead at this point," CU quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf said Wednesday. "I think a lot more confidence; he had a little game experience." A 6-foot-2, 225-pound freshman from Melissa, Texas, Lewis was the third-string quarterback during the Buffs' abbreviated 2020 season.After the five-game regular season, however, backup Tyler Lytle entered the transfer portal - and eventually trans ferred to Massachusetts - and Lewis was elevated to second string for the Alamo Bowl. Although the Buffs lost to Texas, 55-23, in that game on Dec. 29 in San Antonio, Lewis came off the bench to lead them to three touchdowns. "Going in (to the season), i t was definitely hard coming in and getting adjusted to everything," Lewis said. "I just had to get adjusted to the speed of the game, and I think that whole half-season that we had really helped me, like going through practice, learning from coach Langs dorf and (head coach Karl) Dorrell, (offensive coordinator Darrin Chiaverini).
