With Nik Bonitto, Isaiah Thomas and Perrion Winfrey having departed for the NFL after last season, the Sooners will have plenty of new faces along the defensive front this fall. Reggie Grimes will be a major piece in not only trying to replace the produc tion OU lost there, but also in trying to make the Sooners a much better defense after last season's overall disappointment. "It starts up front," Grimes said. "The game's going to be won or lost up front. It's going to be on us, regardless. "I think we now have guys...they know, and they take pride in that." Grimes said getting the defense down was tricky during spring. "It was a lot, just because you were caught up in we're installing 10 plays today and then you get those down and it's 10 plays tomorr ow," Grimes said.Now, though, the system is making more sense to Grimes. "You don't know if we're coming off the edge, if we're dropping back in coverage or we're being put over a receiver," Grimes said of the defensive ends. "I think that's a rea lly great thing. That's one of the little tricks … of Coach Venables' defense is that everyone can do everything. You don't know where the pressure's coming from, but you know the pressure's always gonna be coming." In 13 games last season, Grimes made five starts and finished with 18 tackles and a pair of sacks. - Daily Oklahoman

Hand-in-hand with the offensive tempo is the desire for Venables' defense - and though Ted Roof is the defensive coordinator, there's no doubt the defense is Venables' - to be aggressive about bringing pressure. That not only is about how much pressure t hey bring but from where. Defensive end Reggie Grimes said earlier this week he's being asked to do much more in the new scheme compared to what he did under Alex Grinch's system the last two seasons. The Sooners will bring pressure from plenty of differ ent spots and angles as they figure to be much less predictable in that area than they had been in recent years. The defensive ends and linebackers, in particular, are being tasked to do more than they had to do previously, which figures to give defensiv e ends like Grimes and Ethan Downs and linebackers like DaShaun White and David Ugwoegbu, among others, more of a chance to shine. - Daily Oklahoman
