The process that will aim to ensure Jalon Daniels' body is healthy for the 2023 season is ongoing. In the past week, Kansas football head coach Lance Leipold said they will monitor how much their junior quarterback throws the ball during spring practice. It's a revelation that highlights, once again, the shoulder injury that forced Daniels to miss four games last season. And not long after that, director of sports performance Matt Gildersleeve said they're trying to create a really good foundation for D aniels so he can be in an even better position in the future. But Daniels, as optimistic as ever, downplayed any air of significance that plan could create. The way he explained it, it's more so just about making sure there aren't any setbacks. And , as long as that holds, this aspect of the program's upward trajectory can continue. "Really just making sure that I feel all right, for real, and staying in contact with the trainers every single day," Daniels said. "Just coming in and getting that ext ra work, pre-hab is better than rehab, and we definitely don't want any setbacks at all." Daniels' return to the Jayhawks for 2023 gives Leipold and company one of the top returning starting quarterbacks in the Big 12 Conference. Daniels' development in recent years has been substantial. His availability puts Kansas in the best position, compared to the Jayhawks' other options there, to reach bowl eligibility for a second-straight season. - Topeka Capital Journal

Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels isn't leaving the Jayhawks anytime soon. Daniels announced on social media on Friday that he plans to return to the program in 2023 - presumably instead of entering the NFL Draft or transfer portal. Instead, Daniels will return for his senior year. He has two years of eligibility remaining. Last season, Daniels led the Jayhawks (6-7, 3-6 Big 12) to their first bowl appearance since the 2008 season.Kansas lost 55-53 to Arkansas in a triple-overtime Liberty Bowl thr iller at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Despite the loss, the star QB had quite the game. Daniels broke multiple Liberty Bowl records, including total touchdowns (6) and passing yards (544). Daniels threw for 2,014 passing yards with 18 passing touchdowns and four interceptions in the 2022 season. On the ground, the QB ran for 425 yards and seven touchdowns. In his nine appearances, Daniels led KU to a 5-4 record. - The Kansas City Star

Kansas football coach Lance Leipold said Tuesday that junior quarterback Jalon Daniels was "doubtful" for Saturday's 11 a.m. game at Oklahoma, and all signs point to redshirt senior Jason Bean making the start for the 19th-ranked Jayhawks. Daniels was in jured late in the first half of last Saturday's 38-31 loss to No. 17 TCU when linebacker Jamoi Hodge landed on Daniels' right shoulder with the entirety of his body weight. Daniels left the game after the play and was evaluated in the medical tent and th e locker room before emerging for the second half in a black hoodie, clearly done for the day. Before Daniels returned to the field, Leipold told FS1 sideline reporter Allison Williams that Daniels' return to the game was a 50-50 proposition. He said aft er the game that the KU QB was still being evaluated and that the 48 hours that followed would help determine where things go from there. - Lawrence Journal World

Jason Bean took over at quarterback to start the second half for Kansas on Saturday after Jalon Daniels left the 19th-ranked Jayhawks' game against No. 17 TCU with an apparent injury to his right shoulder. Daniels was hurt as Jamoi Hodge sacked him with 41 seconds left in the first half, and he went to the locker room for treatment on his throwing shoulder. He was on the sideline in street clothes in the second half with his right arm in a sling. Bean threw touchdown passes on two of the Jayhawks' first three series of the second half to put Kansas ahead 17-10. Daniels has been the catalyst for the Jayhawks' surprising 5-0 start. He came into the game fifth in the Big 12 in total offense. Daniels fumbled at the goal line in the second quarter as the Ja yhawks were driving for what would have been the go-ahead touchdown. He was 5 for 10 for 89 yards when he got hurt. - AP College Football

Jace Gilbert missed three field goals, including a 37-yarder with a chance to tie the game with under 30 seconds to play as Kansas held off Iowa State 14-11 on Saturday to remain undefeated. At 5-0 overall, this is the Jayhawks' best start to the season since 2009 and just the second time in the last 14 years they’re 2-0 to begin Big 12 Conference play. Jalon Daniels and Daniel Hishaw both scored rushing touchdowns for the Jayhawks, who were shut out in the second half, but did just enough to hang on for the victory.Daniels threw for 93 yards while Iowa State's Hunter Dekkers had 278 passing yards but threw a costly interception in the second quarter. Dekkers' interception in the second quarter ended up turning into a touchdown for the Jayhawk s, a 2-yard run by Daniels for a 14-0 lead. Iowa State got on the board just before halftime with Dekkers' 7-yard pass to Easton Dean. A two-point conversion after a botched PAT snap drew the Cyclones within 14-8. Gilbert came into the game 5-for-5 on fi eld goals for the Cyclones but missed two kicks off the post - one in the first quarter and another in the fourth - which proved costly. - Kansas/AP College Football

A 4-0 start put the Jayhawks atop the others receiving votes pile Sunday in The Associated Press college football poll presented by Regions Bank, 41 points behind No. 25 Kansas State. The Jayhawks have not been ranked since mid-October 2009, a dry spell of nearly 13 years that is currently the longest among Power Five conference programs. Getting stuck behind the Sunflower State rivalry must have been particularly annoying to Kansas fans. The Wildcats moved into the rankings for the first time this seas on after upsetting Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday. That big win came a week after K-State lost at home to Tulane, which in turn lost to Southern Mississippi on Saturday. Those types of results can twist voters in knots.Meanwhile, Kansas and quarte rback Jaylon Daniels have rolled through Tennessee Tech, West Virginia, Houston and Duke, with the middle two on the road. Take out the FCS opponent and the Jayhawks have an average margin of victory of 13 points. They also rank third in the nation behin d No. 3 Ohio State and TCU and just ahead of No. 2 Alabama in yards per play (7.80). Nice company. Kansas' resume has a similar look to No. 24 Pittsburgh's. Both beat West Virginia in close games. Both have Group of Five road wins: Kansas at Houston and Pitt at Western Michigan. Both beat FCS schools. The difference is Pitt lost an OT game to No. 8 Tennessee at home and Kansas handed Duke its first loss of the season. Close call, but Reality Check says advantage KU. The voters are going to make the Jayh awks do more. - AP College Football

Jalon Daniels threw three touchdown passes, including one in overtime, and cornerback Jacobee Bryant returned an interception for a score on the final play as Kansas beat West Virginia 55-42 in their Big 12 opener on Saturday night. Kansas (2-0, 1-0 Big 12) has won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2011. "For us to get off to a 2-0 start and keep stacking (good) days the best we can, it says a lot," Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. "But it will only mean a lot if we go out and p lay well again." West Virginia rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied at 42.After Daniels found Quentin Skinner with a 4-yard scoring pass in overtime, Bryant stepped in front of JT Daniels' pass intended for West Virginia's Bryce Ford-Wheaton and ran 86 yards untouched into the end zone to end the game. The Mountaineers (0-2, 0-1) have lost their first two games for the first time since 1979. Jalon Daniels had another efficient passing game and was especially elusive with his legs. He ran for a career-high 85 yards, eclipsing the 45 yards he had in a win over Texas last year. "I'm not somebody who's gonna turn down any kind of contact," he said. "I play quarterback but at the end of the day, w e're trying to move the sticks. The game of football is to be able to keep getting yards, moving the sticks, and get into the end zone. I'm gonna do what I have to do." - Kansas/AP College Football

Kansas coach Lance Leipold said Tuesday that he is planning for Jalon Daniels to be the starting quarterback when the season opens - a role that has seemed likely for Daniels since the final month of last season. Daniels, a junior, has been battling fift h-year senior Jason Bean in a competition that appears to be one in name only. "If you want to type right now, 'Leipold expects Daniels to be the starter,' go ahead and type it," Leipold, who is entering his second season as the Jayhawks' coach, said at a news conference following the first training camp practice. "That's probably the best way that I'll answer it at this time."Daniels, from outside Los Angeles, started six of the seven games in which he appeared as a freshman in 2020 and three of the six games he played in last season. Those three starts, however, were primarily why Daniels earned that responsibility this season. Filling in for Bean, who started the first nine games last season but was unavailable because of an injury, Daniels c ompleted 21 of 30 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns and threw a two-point conversion pass to tight end Jared Casey in overtime to give Kansas a surprising 57-56 win at Texas on Nov. 13. - Lawrence Journal World

Everything was going against Kansas late. The momentum. The crowd. The score. Even history. And then first-year Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold decided go for the win and got it. Jalon Daniels hit Jared Casey on a scrambling pass for a 2-point conversion in overtime and Kansas stunned Texas 57-56 Saturday night to snap the Jayhawks' eight game losing streak this season and a 56-game losing streak in Big 12 road contests that stretched back to 2008. "It really says a lot about the young men we have in the l ocker room," Leipold said. "They've been starving. It's one win. We have to build on it." Leipold knew he had nothing to lose on the conversion attempt. Lose the game? So what? Leipold is trying to rebuild the worst program in the Big 12. But make it and beat Texas - even a struggling Longhorns program now mired in its worst losing streak in more than 60 years - and Kansas (2-8, 1-6 Big 12) could grab college football's attention with a stunner. It worked to perfection after the Jayhawks nearly le t it slip away. Texas had rallied from 21 down in the second half to force overtime on Casey Thompson's touchdown pass to Cade Brewer with 22 seconds left. Texas got the ball first in overtime and scored on Marcus Washington's scoop-and-stretch touchdown catch. But an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty set up Kansas with a short field and the the Jayhawks answered with Devin Neal's 2-yard touchdown run. Leipold never hesitated on the decision to go for the win. Kansas players stormed onto the field when Da niels found Casey trailing the scrambling quarterback across the middle of the field and the fullback cradled the throw for the score. "I didn't actually see the catch...But I saw everybody running toward them, so I made my way toward them too and jumped into the dogpile," Neal said. "It was just truly remarkable." - Kansas/AP College Football

In the early stages of what very well could be a lengthy quarterback competition for the Kansas football team in 2021, a number of contenders are getting their chances to make their case for the job. Sophomore Jalon Daniels, who started in six of nine ga mes for the Jayhawks in 2020, said following the team's fourth spring practice that he and other QBs are rotating in and out to get reps, and working with a variety of teammates in the process. "We're all switching," Daniels, the first QB to speak with t he media this spring, told reporters on Thursday night. "Every single day at practice, switching ones, with the twos, with the threes," he added, referencing the first, second and third team groupings. Interim head coach Emmett Jones, who last was made a vailable for a media session on March 30, following spring practice No. 1, described the team's QB situation as "an all-out race" with "seven guys out there competing." The three names that have been brought up by players most often so far during intervi ews this spring are Daniels and seniors Miles Kendrick and Miles Fallin. True freshmen Conrad Hawley and Ben Easters also arrived at KU early this spring, each hoping to work his way up the depth chart. - Lawrence Journal World

When Jalon Daniels decided late last year to play football at the University of Kansas, the young quarterback from Lawndale, Calif., saw it as an opportunity to do something remarkable. "I've always wanted to be the guy to turn around a program," Daniels said. Even so, the true freshman said he had "no idea" when he arrived on campus that he would get a head start on those endeavors within a few months by becoming the Jayhawks' starting QB. Daniels spoke to reporters on Monday for the first time this se ason - the Kansas football program typically doesn't make true freshmen available for interviews. Of course, KU didn't give Daniels the keys to the offense right off the bat. When Les Miles' second season with the program kicked off on Sept. 12 versus Co astal Carolina, senior Thomas MacVittie started and rotated in and out of the lineup with junior Miles Kendrick. Daniels was the third QB on the depth chart and made his college debut doing mop-up duty in KU's home loss to Coastal.Miles knew at th e time that Daniels, who didn't turn 18 until this past week, couldn't be asked to take on the task of being a No. 1 QB at that point. "Entering the season, he didn't have enough snaps to get him ready," Miles said. "Period. No matter how you put it." In order for a freshman such as Daniels to start right off the bat, he would have to graduate early and play an entire spring practice schedule to get enough reps, Miles said. But two weeks after this season began - likely out of necessity, with MacVittie hurt and unable to play - Daniels became KU's starting QB as the Jayhawks opened Big 12 play at Baylor. - Lawrence Journal World

The Jayhawks are relying on freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels to run their offense, one that lost its best player in running back Pooka Williams to an opt-out. Daniels has completed 57% of his passes for 381 yards, an interception and no touchdowns. "He 's had the ability to use his legs to make plays down the field," Campbell said. "He's got a really strong arm. He can make all the throws, and then on top of it, as soon as you want to play pass coverage, he's got such good athletic ability, he can make you pay in the running game. "It'll challenge the discipline and detail of who we are and certainly who we want to be on defense." - Des Moines Register

Kansas football coach Les Miles started and stuck with true freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels in the Jayhawks' 47-14 loss at Baylor. Nevertheless, KU's quarterback situation going forward remained more murky than transparent late Saturday night. If an i njury to senior QB Thomas MacVittie, who started and subbed in and out during the Jayhawks' loss to Coastal Carolina, opened the door for Daniels, Miles wouldn't say. The head coach instead pointed to the talents the young QB displayed during practices w hen asked why Daniels got the starting job. "You probably saw his arm. You didn't see the highlights of his arm," Miles said. "We know the highlights he is capable of producing."A 6-foot, 200-pound freshman from Lawndale, Calif., Daniels finished 19-for-33 passing in his first career start, throwing for 159 yards, without any touchdowns or interceptions - though some good fortune kept a couple of errant throws out of the possession of BU defenders, who were credited with six pass breakups. The Be ars also sacked the young QB four times on the night. While Miles stated during his postgame video press conference he wasn't "displeased" with Daniels "in any way," KU's head coach didn't commit to starting the freshman again next week, when the Jayhawk s face Oklahoma State in Lawrence. Miles at least said Daniels "could" start the next game. - Lawrence Journal World

The Jalon Daniels era at Kansas football started with a bang. It proved the only meaningful firework, however, on an evening that was otherwise a dud. Daniels, a true freshman quarterback making his first collegiate start, orchestrated a touchdown drive on the Jayhawks' first possession of Saturday's game against Baylor, but the Bears responded by scoring 40 straight points en route to a comfortable 47-14 victory at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas. Les Miles said his players were "a little sick to (their) stomach" by the outcome. "I told them that right now you're going to deal with an ugly feeling in the pit of your stomach, but you're going to have the opportunity to change that," the second-year coach said. "So I tell you, I like the team that's comin g back. I like a team that will play hard until the bitter end, period."After appearing in mop-up duty in his team's season-opening defeat to Coastal Carolina, Daniels handled the entirety of the Jayhawks' conference opener. The former three-star recruit finished 19-for-33 passing for 159 yards and rushed 14 times for 23 yards - Daniels was sacked four times. Miles praised Daniels' ability to improvise on the ground but also stressed that the 6-foot, 200-pound native of Lawndale, Calif., needs to develop into a more balanced player. - Topeka Capital Journal
