Donavon Greene, Virginia Tech, Player News

Virginia Tech fired football coach Brent Pry on Sunday after the program stumbled to its first 0-3 start since 1987. The school announced the move a day after the Hokies fell behind 31-0 on the way to a 45-26 home loss to Old Dominion. In a statement, school president Tim Sands said the change was "necessary" due to on-field results described as "not acceptable" as Pry reached his fourth season. That included giving up 65 unanswered points over more than 70 minutes of game action during last week's home loss to Vanderbilt and into Saturday night's loss to ODU, which beat Pry's Hokies in his coaching debut in 2022 and again in what became his finale. "Blacksburg will always hold a special place in our hearts," Pry said in his own statement. "We leave with wonderful memories and lifelong friendships, and we will forever be cheering for the Hokies." Offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery will serve as interim coach, while Sands pointed to a need to "develop a financial, organizational and leadership plan that will rapidly position (the program) to be competitive with the best" in the Atlantic Coast Conference. "The new framework for college sports will be fully established for next season, so this is the time to make a major move," Sands said.

This is Virginia Tech's first 0-3 start since the first year of Frank Beamer's 29-year run that put the Hokies on the map nationally, notably with a trip to the national championship game behind star freshman quarterback Michael Vick in 1999 among Beamer's 23 bowl appearances. Beamer's run ended in 2015 and the Hokies played for the ACC title a year later, but otherwise the program has struggled for traction and hasn't cracked the AP Top 25 poll in four years. The school hired Pry in 2021 after eight seasons as the defensive coordinator at Penn State. But the former Virginia Tech graduate assistant under Beamer went 16-24 with the Hokies, including 10-13 in league play. - AP College Football

Wake Forest had the highest-scoring football team in its history last season, but it may be even better this year thanks to the recovery of talented wide receiver Donavon Greene. Greene, a four-star recruit from Mount Airy, suffered an ACL tear during off-season workouts before last season. He didn't play a down during the 11-3 season, when the Deacons won the ACC's Atlantic division. "It was tough, no doubt about it," Greene said of missing last season. At 6-foot-2 and a physical 210 pounds, Greene showed flashes of what he could become in 2020 but got banged up late in the season.

He started and played in eight games in 2020 and made 29 catches for 582 yards with two touchdowns. "There's going to an adjustment, but I'm looking forward to being out there," Greene said of Monday's first day of practice. "We had a good season last year and I'm excited to work with all the receivers again and to just be part of the team again." The Demon Deacons will report for preseason camp on Sunday then have their first practice Monday morning in preparation for the opener on Sept. 1 at home against VMI. - Winston Salem Journal

Wake Forest football coach Dave Clawson announced the team will be without three players -- two of which were returning starters -- for the 2021 season. The Deacons will be without wide receiver Donavon Greene and right tackle Je'Vionte' Nash, as well as reserve linebacker Chase Monroe, due to offseason injuries. "These three young men will play a key role off the field this season as they work towards a speedy and safe recovery," Clawson said in a statement provided by the athletics department.

Greene, a Mount Airy alumnus, started eight games last season and averaged 20.1 yards per catch. He enrolled at the school in 2019, appearing in four games to preserve his redshirt status. Nash started all nine games in 2020 and has 38 career appearances for the Deacons. He's been with the program since the 2016 season, opting to return for the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to student-athletes. - Winston Salem Journal
