Connor Watkins carried it 10 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns, and he completed six passes for 90 yards to help Villanova beat Youngstown State 24-17 on Thursday night in a season opener for both teams. Watkins, the Coastal Athletic Association preseason offensive player of the year, scored on a 29-yard run in the third quarter to extend the lead to 24-3. Youngstown State battled back to get within seven points with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter. Then Villanova was forced to punt on its next possession, but Ethan Gettman booted a 62-yarder that was downed at the Youngstown State 6-yard line. Richie Kimmel sealed it for Villanova with an interception.

Beau Brungard was intercepted two times for Youngstown State. He finished with 152 yards passing and a touchdown. Villanova opened the scoring on Ethan Gettman's 42-yard field goal in the first quarter - his eighth career make from 40-plus yards. Watkins added a 14-yard touchdown for a 10-0 lead. Isaiah Ragland also had a rushing touchdown in the first half from 3-yards out. Zahmir Dawud intercepted a pass with 1:27 remaining in the first half and Villanova took over near midfield. The Wildcats led 17-3 at the break, aided by two Youngstown State turnovers. - AP College Football

Connor Watkins scored on a 2-yard run with 1:11 remaining and Villanova rallied to beat Delaware 29-26 on Saturday. Watkins opened the scoring with a 7-yard run to give Villanova (6-5, 4-4 Colonial Athletic Association) a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Nick Henderson pulled Delaware (7-4, 4-4) even by quarter's end with a 48-yard scoring strike to Thyrick Pitts. Henderson and Pitts teamed up again for a 7-yard touchdown early in the second quarter but the Blue Hens missed the point-after kick and led 13-7. The Wildcats regained the lead on Deewil Barlee's 1-yard run before a field goal by Brandon Ratcliffe gave Delaware a 16-14 lead at intermission. Henderson's 25-yard scoring strike to Jourdan Townsend gave the Blue Hens a 23-14 lead midway through the third quarter. Barlee scored on an 11-yard run to get Villanova within 23-21 heading to the final period. Henderson completed 37 of 59 passes for 347 yards for Delaware.   10/22/22 - QB Connor WatkinsrSr/2025, Villanova, 6-2, 225 (DS#61 QB) + More +

Matthew Mercurio kicked a 28-yard field goal on the final play of the game and Connor Watkins threw three touchdown passes to propel Villanova to a 31-29 victory over Albany on Saturday. Watkins connected with Rayjoun Pringle for an 80-yard touchdown on a first-down play with 4:44 remaining in the game to give Villanova (4-3, 2-2 Colonial Athletic Association) a 28-16 lead. Reese Poffenbarger answered with two touchdown passes to Thomas Greaney 61 seconds apart - covering 4 and 5 yards - and Albany (1-6, 0-4) grabbed a 29-28 lead with 53 seconds left to play. That was enough time for the Wildcats, who used Watkins' 23-yard pass to Dez Boykin and defensive-holding and pass-interference penalties to keep the drive alive and set up Mercurio's winning kick.

Villanova jumped out to a 21-0 lead on TD Ayo-Durojaiye's 70-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Watkins' scoring tosses to Jaaron Hayek covering 18 yards and a 20-yarder to Pringle in the second. Albany didn't get on the scoreboard until Poffenbarger hit Brevin Easton for a 26-yard touchdown with 6 seconds left in the first half. Poffenbarger's 1-yard touchdown run and Elijah Hills' sack of Watkins for an 11-yard loss and a safety left the Great Danes trailing 21-16 after three quarters. Watkins completed 18 of 26 passes for 292 yards for the Wildcats. Ayo-Durojaiye rushed for 136 yards on 20 carries. Pringle totaled 143 yards on four catches. Poffenbarger completed 33 of 42 passes for 370 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for the Great Danes. Poffenbarger also accounted for 44 of Albany's 57 rushing yards on 14 carries. - Villanova/AP College Football
