Diego Pavia scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in overtime as Vanderbilt upset Virginia Tech 34-27 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams with the Commodores rallying after blowing a 17-point lead. The graduate transfer from New Mexico State and the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year needed four plays to put the Commodores ahead in overtime. He finished rushing for 104 yards and threw for 190 yards. Virginia Tech tried switching up quarterbacks in its try in overtime.

Collin Schlee came in on a sweltering day when Kyron Drones threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns. Drones came in for a run and picked up 2 yards. Then Schlee was sacked on third down. His throw to Da'Quan Felton went out of the back of the end zone, starting a big celebration by Vanderbilt. Pavia nearly won the game in regulation. After Virginia Tech took its only lead at 27-20 with 4:12 left, he capped a 70-yard drive with an 8-yard TD pass to Sedrick Alexander with 1:51 left. He set up Brock Taylor for the potential game-winning 43-yard field goal that missed wide right, sending the game into overtime. He helped Vanderbilt stun the Hokies, who not only came in favored by 13 1/2 points looking to build on the momentum from winning the Military Bowl last December to go 7-6. - AP College Football

2023 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Diego Pavia, New Mexico State, QB,...Pavia led the Aggies to the second 10-win season in program history, and first since 1960. New Mexico State also reached the CUSA Championship Game in the Aggies' first year as a member of the league, and NM State is headed to its second consecutive bowl game, a feat that has only been accomplished one other time in program history.   Diego Pavia threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and New Mexico State held off a late rally by Bowling Green to win the Quick Lane Bowl 24-19 on Monday. The Aggies (7-6) were up 24-7 late in the third quarter, but the Falcons closed the gap in the fourth quarter to make it 24-19 after a field goal, a safety off of a blocked punt and Camden Orth's 19-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Broden with 6:27 left. From there, New Mexico State kept control of the ball for the rest of the game.

Bowling Green (6-7) lost starting quarterback Matt McDonald early in the first quarter when he was hit late by Aggies safety Dylan Early while going out of bounds on a third-down run. He was replaced by Orth, who twice led the Falcons into field-goal range in the first half but Mason Lawler missed both tries. The Aggies scored first to make it 7-0 on Pavia's 15-yard scoring pass to Star Thomas on their first possession of the game. The junior quarterback later added a 2-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to Eric Marsh. - New Mexico State/AP College Football

Diego Pavia threw a career-high four touchdown passes, all in the first half, and New Mexico State celebrated bowl-eligibility with a 65-3 rout of Valparaiso on Saturday. Pavia's TD throws were 50 yards to Jonathan Brady, 69 yards to Justice Powers, 70 yards to Kordell David, and 72 yards to Bryce Childress. Pavia ran 13 yards for one touchdown and had a 75-yard touchdown run called back because of a block-in-the-back penalty. The Aggies got another long-distance score when Ahmonte Watkins raced 78 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Pavia was 9-of-13 passing for 323 yards before giving way to freshman Gavin Frakes late in the second quarter. Frakes completed 5 of 10 passes for 58 yards and third-stringer Weston Eget completed his only attempt for an 8-yard touchdown to Brady.

New Mexico State's first-half dominance was so thorough that the Aggies faced third down only twice in the first 25 minutes of play and converted both times. They finished 3-for-5 on third down in the first half. Three of their scoring drives were of four plays or less. The second half continued in New Mexico State's favor and the Aggies outgained the Beacons 621-188 for the game. The Aggies added Saturday's game to their schedule to compensate for their scheduled game against San Jose State that was canceled after the death of San Jose State freshman running back Camdan McWright. Each team was granted a waiver by the NCAA. Valparaiso (5-7) was allowed to exceed the FCS limit of 11-regular-season games and the Aggies (6-6) were allowed to count both of their wins over FCS teams toward bowl eligibility. The Aggies are 6-6 after Saturday's win and are now bowl eligible. - New Mexico State/AP College Football
