The First Responder Bowl provided both a homecoming and redemption for Memphis sophomore quarterback Seth Henigan. Henigan threw for 284 yards and three touchdowns - two of them to Eddie Lewis - and Jeyvon Ducker ran for two scores to help Memphis rout U tah State 38-10 on Tuesday. The Tigers' regular-season finale was a 34-31 loss to SMU in the same stadium, when Henigan - from about 70 miles north of Dallas in Denton - threw an interception into the end zone on the final play. "Seth's going back home; is he going to have flashbacks?" Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said. "To see him come out and do what he did statistically today and lead our team to victory was huge." "I put the past in the past," said Henigan, who was 20 for 29. "I was focused on tha t opponent, Utah State."Henigan's touchdown passes were all thrown in the second quarter, when Memphis (7-6) outscored Utah State (6-7) 21-3. The Tigers outgained the Aggies in the period 179 yards to 39 and 137-16 in the air. "We could not cover well. Explosive throws (by Henigan). We could not get anything going offensively at all," Utah State coach Blake Anderson said. "It just was anemic, especially in the second quarter." Ducker had a 1-yard plunge and a 48-yard sprint for scores, both in th e fourth quarter. Lewis caught scoring passes of 15 and 22 yards, and Caden Prieskorn caught a 3-yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds remaining in the half for Memphis. Chris Howard added a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter for the Tigers. Bishop Da venport threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Brian Cobbs in the fourth quarter for the Aggies in relief of quarterback Cooper Legas, who left early in the third quarter with what Anderson said was an injury to either his right ankle or ACL. Connor Coles kic ked a career-long 53-yard field goal for Utah State. The Aggies gained 261 yards, 89 in the first half, after averaging 362.3 during the season. - Memphis/AP College Football

Seth Henigan's last throw of Memphis football's regular season lingered in his mind. It was an interception in the end zone with seconds remaining that clinched SMU's win over the Tigers. Henigan thought about what he could've done differently and how it was another close loss in the season. What didn't linger was where he thought he'd be playing quarterback in 2023. Less than 24 hours after the game, Henigan told coach Ryan Silverfield he'd back for his junior season. The key factor was loyalty and fin ishing what he started when he came to Memphis in January 2021. "I made a commitment when I was 17 to this university and this program. That's just who I am," Henigan told The Commercial Appeal on Monday. "Once I make a commitment to something, I'm going to stick with it. I feel like it's best for my career going forward. All my goals are still in front of me as far as college football and the NFL."I feel like Memphis, we have a lot of potential going in next year. So I just wanted to make it cle ar to everyone my intent to stay and hopefully that helps bring other people to our program." Henigan, who's thrown for 3,287 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season, added he never considered the transfer portal as an option. He still b elieved in what Memphis could accomplish and came away more confident after meeting with Silverfield. As the two shared their goals and expectations for the program, Henigan said Silverfield made clear it was their job to win games. No matter who surroun ds them, it's on the quarterback and head coach to accomplish that and Henigan was fine with that challenge. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Action/Reaction. Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan and tight end Caden Prieskorn informed the team they will return next season. Memphis could have as many as eight starters on offense back in 2023. However, Althletic director Laird Veatch made clear that neither he nor coach Ryan Silverfield are pleased with the on-field results. Memphis has consecutive losing seasons in conference play for the first time since 2010-11. "To be clear, our shared goal and expectation remain for Memphis to be the top progr am in our conference and compete annually on the national stage," Athletic Director Laird Veatch said, adding Coach Ryan Silverfield is returning for a fourth season. Veatch's letter came after one of the Tigers went on Twitter to defend Silverfield, who was ripped by ESPN radio host Paul Finebaum. Senior defensive lineman Wardalis Ducksworth sent out two tweets Thursday in support of his coach while also calling out parts of the Memphis fan base. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Seth Henigan returns after his Freshman All-American season as the established leader of the Tigers' offense. All eyes are on him to take a bigger leap in his second year. Henigan added more weight since last season to get stronger. He's a better student of the offense, which won't change much under offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey. But with fewer proven skill position players around him, Memphis needs him healthy to carry a greater burden on offense. The Tigers saw last season how quarterback injuries can affect things. Grant Gunnell's preseason injury opened the door for Henigan and when Henigan was out against UCF with a shoulder injury, the offense sputtered. Until playmakers emerge, the offense revolves around Henigan and his health is as critica l as his on-field growth. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Seth Henigan's debut season at Memphis went smoother than expected. He made history as the first true freshman quarterback to start a Tigers season opener, then became a freshman all-American. Henigan enters preseason camp of year two as the no-doubt sta rter. After throwing for 3,322 yards - second-most by a Tigers quarterback in his first season - and 25 touchdowns with eight interceptions, Henigan leads an offense with new coordinator Tim Cramsey that faces more personnel questions than recent seasons . Who will be his No. 1 receiving target? Can the run game get back to its 2017-19 form? With four returning starters on the offensive line, how much better can Henigan get? Ask coach Ryan Silverfield, and there's confidence Henigan has yet to reach his ceiling. "Going into a second year of a quarterback, whether it's a rookie in the NFL or freshman to sophomore year, the game's going to slow down a little bit more," Silverfield said on 92.9 FM ESPN Friday. "(Seth's) not thinking about the play concept ... or processing in your mind as a play occurs. Now hopefully, it just naturally happens where it's just a feel for it, that he's been in those situations before." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield affirmed Monday that Seth Henigan will be his starting quarterback when the Tigers open preseason practice in August. With Grant Gunnell transferring to North Texas this month, Henigan enters the season as one of two Tigers quarterbacks on the roster with in-game experience. But after he and Gunnell battled this spring, the job once again belongs to Henigan. "We know that Seth's our guy moving forward, we're excited about him," Silverfield said at Fire Station 18 where the Tigers unveiled a new blue pumper truck that will be present at various sporting events next season. Silverfield didn't mention Gunnell by name but Henigan said during a radio interview Friday that he believed Gunnell left because he felt he wouldn't be the starter.Henigan said he took almost all the first-team reps in the spring and understood why Gunnell, who started two seasons at Arizona, wanted to perhaps seek another opportunity. It's something Silverfield knows well as he's described how roster management is often part of his job. Memphis has added six players via transfer since spring practice ended. "I understand this day and age with college football and the transfer portal, especially with the quarterback position," Silverfield said. He added that he doesn't expect the Tigers to dive too deeply into the portal between now and August. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Seth Henigan threw for 392 yards and two touchdowns, and Memphis' defense stymied No. 23 SMU in a 28-25 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday. Henigan, who missed last week's loss to UCF with a right shoulder injury, completed 34 of 53 passes, including touchdowns of 2 yards to Eddie Lewis and 27 yards to Javon Ivory. It took a stout defensive effort in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory for the Tigers (5-4, 2-3 American Athletic Conference). SMU (7-2, 3-2) trailed 28-10 after a 40-yard pass fro m Memphis running back Rodrigues Clark to tight end Sean Dykes with 11:04 remaining. The Mustangs' rally began when Tanner Mordecai connected with Danny Gray for a 27-yard touchdown - Gray's second of the day. Tyler Lavine scored on a 1-yard run wi th just under six minutes left to cut the Memphis lead to three points. SMU had one last drive after the Tigers turned over the ball on downs at the SMU 46, but Mordecai's pass was intercepted by Rodney Owens, sending the Mustangs to their second straigh t loss. The Tigers' defense was exceptional. SMU, which entered the game averaging 504 yards of offense and 42 points per game, finished with 323 yards and failed to score at least 31 points for the first time this season. Memphis had five sacks and nine tackles for loss. - Memphis/AP College Football
