Linebacker Eric Gentry will miss all of spring practice following ankle surgery last month, Riley said. Gentry suffered a high ankle sprain in October and played through the injury in USC's final games. The hope was, with some rest, Gentry would be able to heal without surgery, but it became clear to USC that the procedure would be necessary. Riley said Gentry is expected to be ready for summer workouts with the team. - Orange County Register

USC coach Lincoln Riley said Tuesday that injured star linebacker Eric Gentry will be "day-to-day." He added that is "probably fortunate" that the Trojans have bye this week. In a 43-42 loss at Utah, Gentry came up holding different body parts a few times during the game, but continued to play through them. But he couldn't play through what appeared to be an ankle injury suffered in the fourth quarter when Gentry collided with a teammate after putting pressure on Utah quarterback Cameron Rising.

Gentry didn't play another snap, but it wasn't his last time on the field that night. After spending some time in the injury tent, Gentry emerged and hopped out to the middle of the field to give one final on-field speech to his defensive teammates. Trainers then put Gentry's foot and ankle in a walking boot. USC benefits from the timing of the injuries. The Trojans have a bye week this week and then by far USC's easiest three-game stretch of the season. USC visits 3-4 Arizona in Tucson on Oct. 29, then hosts 3-3 Cal on Nov. 5 and 1-5 Colorado on Friday, Nov. 11. - USC Football

USC linebacker Eric Gentry has yet to speak with the media this fall camp, but his teammates and coaches can't say enough about him. The sophomore transferred from Arizona State to USC in the spring and has been transitioning seamlessly and learning quickly. "The amount of ball he's been able to digest so far has been pretty impressive," inside linebackers coach Brian Odom said. "When he can get on the same page as the other guys - he's improving every day - I'm excited about his future." Odom said the coaching staff has been giving him a lot of repetitions to help him learn quickly and see what he's physically capable of.

Even when running gassers at the end of a hot, two-hour practice, Gentry gallops to the front of the pack with energy and a competitive drive. "It's really deceptive," Odom said. "He's really quick and has tremendous balance for his length. You don't see a lot of guys like that with his proportions." Gentry's athleticism is paired with a 6-foot-6, 200-pound frame. At first glance, he seems wiry, but in action, he uses his long limbs to increase his coverage area. At ASU, he was an early enrollee and became a freshman All-American after ranking sixth on the team in tackles (45). Although he has yet to show what he can do in a game with the Trojans, he did grab an interception during the fall camp scrimmage. "With the plays, he's been catching on," linebacker Raesjon Davis said. "He's always learning. That's been a main thing because he got here later than everyone else. So him getting the playbook was a big thing." - Orange County Register

Arizona State linebacker transfer Eric Gentry has signed with USC, the program announced on Twitter on Friday (April 29). He arrives at USC with three seasons of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-6, 205-pound Gentry was a freshman All-American last season at Arizona State. He made 45 tackles with one sack and two passes defended in 10 games. Gentry, who visited USC for last week's spring game, is the second player the Trojans have added at linebacker through the transfer portal since head coach Lincoln Riley arrived, joining former Alabama linebacker Shane Lee. USC has now signed two transfers since the spring game, including Ohio State safety Bryson Shaw. - Orange County Register
