  08/29/24 - RB Devin NealSr/2025, Kansas, 5-10, 215 (DS#5 RB) + More +

Devin Neal ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns on eight first-half carries and No. 22 Kansas beat Lindenwood 48-3 on Thursday night in the opener for both teams. Kansas outscored Lindenwood 27-0 in the second quarter at Children's Mercy Park. Lindenwood, in its third year as an FCS program, played its first game against an FBS opponent. Jalon Daniels, who played only in the first half for Kansas, was 9 of 15 for 148 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The Jayhawks are playing home games in Kansas City - two at Children's Mercy Park and four at Arrowhead Stadium - because of stadium renovations.

Lindenwood averted a shutout with a 34-yard field goal by Logan Seibert with 6:12 left. After forcing a three-and-out on Lindenwood's first series, Kansas marched 65 yards in nine plays for its first touchdown. Neal punched it in from the 5. Kansas had to convert a fourth-and-3 on the drive. But that's all the offense Kansas could muster in the first quarter. Lindenwood ran 20 plays in the first quarter, compared to just 12 for Kansas, and the Lions held the ball for almost 10 minutes. - AP College Football

Devin Neal ran for 224 yards and a touchdown and had 110 receiving yards, leading Kansas past No. 18 Oklahoma State 37-16 on Saturday. The Jayhawks (6-3, 3-3 Big 12 Conference) are bowl eligible for the first time since 2008 when they beat Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Kansas' ground game led the way with 351 yards as a team with Neal setting career highs in both rushing and receiving yards against the Cowboys (6-3, 3-3). Jason Bean was efficient in the air, too. He went 18-for-23 passng for 203 yards with two touchdowns while rushing for a 72-yard touchdown.

Neal and Bean combined for 237 yards on the ground in the first half with two touchdowns. Bean gained 93 yards on four carries while Neal had six catches. Kansas benefited from Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders not playing, with freshman Garrett Rangel throwing interceptions on the Cowboys' first two drives. Rangel went 27 of 40 for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Bryan Green had nine catches for 105 yards for Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State had four turnovers, which resulted in 14 points for Kansas. The Cowboys scored a touchdown with 10 minutes left in the second quarter, their first points in 83 game minutes spanning over their last three. It was an 8-yard touchdown pass by Rangel to Stephon Johnson. - Kansas/AP College Football

There's no denying that one of Kansas' strengths entering the season appears to be the depth it has at running back. Sophomore Devin Neal returns after a breakout first season. So, too, do redshirt junior Torry Locklin, who emerged as a multidimensional threat before a November ankle injury, and redshirt sophomore Daniel Hishaw Jr., who was productive in 2020 before missing all of last season with a hip injury. Add in Minnesota transfer Ky Thomas, a redshirt sophomore from Topeka who led the Golden Gophers in rushing last season, and Nebraska transfer Sevion Morrison, a redshirt sophomore who ran for more than 5,000 yards in high school, and there's no denying Kansas' ground attack appears formidable.

That, Neal said, is thrilling. "We're really dynamic, and we can throw a lot of teams off guard with how fresh we can be, the different looks we can get - three running backs, two-running back sets," Neal said Sunday after the Jayhawks' fifth training camp practice. "Just the dynamics of our room is phenomenal and it's going to be really exciting to watch." Kansas ranked ninth in the Big 12 last season with 139.3 rushing yards per game and 3.8 yards per carry. Much of that was because of Neal, the Lawrence High grad who was pressed into action early in the season and finished with 707 rushing yards and eight touchdowns - and averages of 64.3 yards per game and 4.5 yards per carry. - Lawrence Journal World

Devin Neal said he's excited by the fact that the Jayhawks don't have to spend preseason camp learning the offense and can instead focus on being more complex schematically. "At spring ball, we were testing a few things to see how unique we can be with our offense and dynamic with the different running backs," Neal said. "Now, we don't have to be running basic offenses. Now that we have that year, the coaching staff isn't just now getting in. we've developed our offense and we know what to expect. Now we can build on that and get more at-bats."

Neal said he is up to 215 pounds following the offseason workout and conditioning program and will attempt to play at that weight this season. "I can't play another season at 200," Neal said. "The next day is always sore, and obviously, just being stronger, being a running back, it's going to help me be more dynamic." Neal, who is 5-foot-11, said he thinks being stronger comes with being more athletic, which means he can be more confident when he's on the field. - Lawrence Journal World

What's possible for Devin Neal as a sophomore? Regardless of what was realistic to expect of Neal as a freshman in 2021, the Jayhawks wound up needing him to step up and he went on to lead them in rushing yards and touchdowns. He tallied 707 yards and eight scores on the ground, while averaging 4.5 yards per carry. That, in addition to recording seven receptions for 57 yards and one touchdown. The picture is a bit different now for Kansas at running back in 2022, considering the additions of redshirt sophomore transfers Ky Thomas and Sevion Morrison. Should they deliver as expected, Neal won't need to be relied upon as much. There's more of a bevy of weapons for offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki to look toward. - Topeka Capital Journal

Kansas football head coach sure is glad to have the former Lawrence High star running back on board. At 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds, Neal didn't look like a typical incoming freshman skill player when he joined the roster this summer. But Neal's physicality and stature, Leipold said, are just a portion of what has helped the young back make a good first impression. "To see him and his maturity, the thing I love about the young man is his personality, his character and what he's all about," Leipold said of Neal. Even before preseason camp began for the Jayhawks this past week, Leipold said he learned that Neal was the type of player who on a daily basis takes care of his body, studies pertinent video clips and more. "He's asking questions," Leipold said of another aspect of Neal's approach that was a good sign. "He has definitely got the makeup not just in stature, speed, those things, but in how to go about it - as we like to say, to be a pro." Before Neal became KU's top-rated recruit from the Class of 2021 to join the program, he ran for 1,370 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior at Lawrence High. - Lawrence Journal World
