Will Shipley ran for a career-high 139 yards and two touchdowns as No. 5 Clemson took control in the second half to beat Louisiana Tech 48-20 on Saturday night for its ninth straight win. The Tigers, who started 3-0 for the seventh time in eight seasons, shook off a sluggish first half to put away the Bulldogs (1-2) of Conference USA and win its 35th in a row at home. Clemson, up just 13-6 at the break, took advantage of two Parker McNeil interceptions and fourth-down stop on Louisiana Tech's desperate gamble to stay in contention - all leading to touchdowns.

Clemson linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. picked off McNeil on the Tech 32 and Shipley took the next snap into the end zone. Tigers cornerback Malcolm Greene intercepted McNeil on the next series after the Bulldogs reached the red zone. DJ Uiagalelei moved Clemson 90 yards in 14 plays, ending on Phil Mafah's 4-yard TD run. Down 27-6, Tech and first-year coach Sonny Cumbie rolled the dice on fourth-and-2 at its 33-yard line. Marquis Crosby lost a yard as he was stuffed by defensive end Justin Mascoll and linebacker Wade Woodaz. Uiagalelei found Beaux Collins for a 32-yard touchdown pass on the next play to put Clemson up by four touchdowns. - Clemson/AP College Football

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 55. Will Shipley, RB, Clemson, Sophomore. Notable 2021 stats: 739 yards, 11 TDs. Last year's ranking: NR. As a true freshman last season, Shipley came in with advance hype as the No. 2 high school running back in the country. Despite missing two games in the middle of the season with a leg injury, Shipley showed his potential - rushing for 738 yards and 11 touchdowns - the second most by a Clemson true freshman behind Travis Etienne's 13 in 2017. His presence in the backfield in 2022 will be a huge key to Clemson's chances to turning around its fortunes on offense. - ESPN.com

  08/11/22 - RB Will ShipleyJr/2024, Clemson, 5-11, 206 (DS#8 RB) + More +

The play itself wasn't explicitly mentioned, but a smile appeared on Clemson running back Will Shipley's face as he was asked about mistakes from the 2021 season that drive him. "There's a couple of plays I think about," said Shipley, just a bit coyly. Really, the list can be narrowed to one. Shipley was productive last season, but his drop of a perfectly thrown deep ball from D.J. Uiagalelei at Pittsburgh - wide open up the middle of the field - remains a poignant moment for the sophomore. Mostly because it shows the untapped potential of a former five-star recruit, who made part of his reputation in the Charlotte area as a pass-catching threat.

But the drop itself wasn't the most revealing piece for Shipley, who arrived for Clemson's preseason practice looking a bit more mature with a full goatee. He thinks about a "couple" of plays, and a known perfectionist knows he didn't handle them - or it - very well. "I stuck on it for too long," Shipley said. "It not only affected me during the game but even the next week, preparing for the next opponent." This year, Shipley won't let that happen. He was asked about his freshman mistakes and shrugged them off, saying "That's all in the past." One of the Tigers' most promising playmakers believes he has grown up after a trial by fire as a freshman. He thinks back to the first play of his career versus Georgia and laughs, "I didn't know what the hell was going on." He recalls that drop versus Pittsburgh and admits, "The moment was sometimes too big for me last year." But this year, Shipley noticed a difference as soon as camp opened. "Me being a sophomore, I could just feel it today," Shipley said. "Everything is a lot slower than last year." - Charleston Post Courier

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Will Shipley (So.), Clemson,...Worth waiting for. Shipley was rated the second-best running back in his class by ESPN and committed to play college football at Clemson during his junior year at Weddington High School (N. Caro.) The 5-11, 205-pound running back made an instant impact as a freshman and enters 2022 after a debut season in which he rushed 149 times for 739 yards (5.0 avg.) with 11 touchdowns, caught 16 passes for 116 yards, averaged 27.1 yards on 14 kickoff returns and threw a two-yard touchdown pass in 378 snaps over 10 games (five starts).   Clemson finished an unusual season in a very familiar way with a dominating win over rival South Carolina. Will Shipley ran for 128 yards and a touchdown and Clemson's defense smothered the Gamecocks for its seventh-straight win in the Palmetto State rivalry 30-0 on Saturday night. The Tigers had won six straight Atlantic Coast Conference titles and were picked to make it seven straight this past summer before a 2-2 start cost them. Still, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was thrilled his team excelled in the biggest sporting event each year in the Palmetto State. The Tigers (9-3; No. 23 CFP) won their fifth straight this season and matched the longest win streak in the series that they set from 1934-40.

Clemson's defense limited South Carolina (6-6) to 206 yards, its second lowest output this season. It was the Tigers' first rivalry shutout since a 45-0 win in 1989 and its first time holding an opponent scoreless since a 49-0 win over The Citadel in 2020. The Tigers outrushed the Gamecocks 265 to 43. "There's nothing more demoralizing than to have the ball run on you," Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said. The lone drama at the end was whether South Carolina could put points on the board. With five seconds left, quarterback Zeb Noland ran 12 yards to the Clemson 3 before getting tackled by Jeremiah Trotter Jr. Clemson's bench jumped from the sidelines to celebrate the shutout and the landmark win in a game that's the most anticipated sporting event in South Carolina each year. - Clemson/AP College Football

After his mistakes in a loss to Pitt, five-star freshman tailback Will Shipley vowed he'd prove he was capable of becoming a dependable and prominent part of Clemson's offense. Shipley came through on that promise, rescuing the Tigers against Florida State. "For me personally, I'm always happy to do what I can to help this team win," Shipley said. Shipley was stung by a couple of noteworthy miscues in Clemson's 27-17 loss at Pitt a week ago including a drop of a potential touchdown after he'd gotten behind the defense. This time, Shipley led the way to bail out Clemson's struggling offense with a pair of touchdowns, including the go-ahead score from 21 yards out with 2:53 left for a 30-20 victory over Florida State on Saturday.

Shipley told teammates before the go-ahead drive the didn't want a tying field goal, but to put the game away. "That's exactly what we did," he said. Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott believes Shipley's fire can sweep up the whole unit that's had its struggles this season including against the Seminoles. "It was good to show everybody else he's got the heart of a champion," Elliott said of Shipley. The Seminoles (3-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) were poised to snap Clemson's nearly five-year streak of success at home after Jermaine Johnson's 6-yard fumble recovery TD put them ahead 20-17 halfway through the fourth quarter. - Clemson/AP College Football

Will Shipley ran for two touchdowns and No. 6 Clemson had a goal-line stand in the final seconds in wild 14-8 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets (1-2, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) had a chance to force overtime after recovering an onside kick with 1:19 to play. But they were held out of the end zone on four plays from the Clemson 2 in the closing seconds - the last when linebacker James Skalski tackled Dylan Deveney a yard short. The chaos continued, though, when Shipley fumbled in the end zone with Clemson (2-1, 1-0) attempting to run out the clock and was tackled after recovering for a safety with seven seconds left.

The Tigers kicked the ball away and Georgia Tech quarterback Jordan Yates' last ditch throw with 3 seconds left was ruled an incomplete forward pass, ending the game. The game was delayed nearly two hours just before the half because of the threat of lightning around Memorial Stadium. Clemson was favored by nearly four touchdowns and had beaten the Yellow Jackets 73-7 a season ago. This time, though, Clemson and quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei couldn't get the offense going for the second time in three games. Clemson was held to 180 yards in a 10-3 loss to No. 2 Georgia two weeks ago. Georgia Tech limited Clemson to 207 yards the first three quarters and it continually came up with third-down stops. - Clemson/AP College Football

Will Shipley's not too young to see how much No. 6 Clemson needed a strong offensive showing. The five-star freshman tailback had 80 yards rushing and two touchdowns as the Tigers cranked up their offense with a 49-3 win over South Carolina State on Saturday. The dominant performance followed a dreadful one in a 10-3 loss to No. 2 Georgia last week, a game in which Clemson was held without a touchdown for the first time since the 2017 season. "It was very important for us to come out firing on all cylinders," the 19-year-old Shipley said. "This definitely gave us confidence, and we're definitely stepping in the right direction." Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei ran for two scores and threw for a third and Clemson gained 504 yards after managing just 180 - and only 2 rushing - against the SEC's Bulldogs. "I just wanted to come out and prove myself, play a great game," Uiagalelei said. "I'm ready to get better and better." Uiagalelei and the Tigers (1-1) had touchdowns on all four of their first-quarter possessions and pulled away for their 36th straight win over teams from the Football Championship Subdivision.

Uiagalelei began the rout with a 4-yard scoring burst. Shipley and Kobe Pace added scoring runs before Uiagalelei closed the surge with an 11-yard pass to receiver Justyn Ross. It was Ross' first touchdown catch since 2019, after he missed last season due to spinal surgery. Clemson coordinator Tony Elliott said Uiagalelei still has work to do to improve his rhythm with his pass-catchers. "As the quarterback continues to do that, the game will slow down," Elliott said. South Carolina State (0-2) of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference had little chance of slowing the Tigers. Clemson continued its dominant history for the Tigers over their instate rival, improving to 5-0 alltime by a combined score of 287-23. - Clemson/AP College Football

As Will Shipley whipped out of the backfield and turned his wheel route up the sideline, everyone across the country saw the green grass in front of him. It was just the second play of Clemson's mega-opener with Georgia, and the five-star freshman was primed for a highlight-reel play. Of course, Shipley knew he was open, too. "Yeah, I did," Shipley said, smiling, "but D.J. made the right read." The right read for quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei was tight end Davis Allen, coming open across the middle. The pass was batted down at the line of scrimmage, though, and that second-down play went down as one of many missed opportunities in a disappointing loss. On the night, Shipley had just four carries for 7 yards.

The native of Weddington, N.C., also had one catch for 11 yards later in the proceedings, but it was far from the electric debut many Clemson fans hoped for. But now it's time for Shipley's maturity, something coaches raved about all preseason, to come into play. As the No. 6 Tigers (0-1) prepare for South Carolina State, Shipley isn't necessarily thinking about the play everyone else saw. He's focused on the time he didn't press toward the hole with one more step, pulling a linebacker out of his gap. He's logging false steps in pass protection, wanting to meet blitzers closer to the line of scrimmage. "The opportunities were there. I gotta make a guy miss. I gotta make something out of nothing," Shipley said. "I'm not even saying there was nothing there. I gotta make a play. Whether it's one carry or 10 carries, I put that on myself. Going back, I just look at the details, the little things. They all add up. - Charleston Post Courier

By the time Will Shipley sprinted 20 yards downfield with the handoff, he could have let up. He could have given way to his teammate, safety Jalyn Phillips, who was hovering beyond the 21st yard. Make a juke. Turn right. Or left. Or just stop. No, if the freshman running back from Weddington, N.C., has left an impression with Clemson players and coaches this fall camp, it's that he doesn't stop. Shipley went for that 21st yard, with full force, his shoulders dealing Phillips a glancing blow. It was a casual collision, both parties remaining on their feet. But it was very Shipley. Once they reoriented, Shipley turned around for a sprint back to the huddle, and Phillips saw him off with a firm slap on the backside.

The Tigers have become accustomed to this. In the offseason, when they were running hills, it was usually Shipley charging to the front of the pack, up there with cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. and receiver Frank Ladson. On the practice field, he's still zooming in one direction or another. "He's not like a typical freshman," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "He's just - wushhhh - locked in all the time. Everything. He's going to win every sprint. He's not a guy who is going to be respectful to everybody and say 'Maybe I shouldn't win this sprint.' He doesn't worry about anyone else. "He's going to win every sprint, and if you can't run with him, too bad. That's just his mindset. He's not a guy who is going to wait until his senior year to be a leader. He showed up here as a leader." - Charleston Post Courier

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound five star from Waddington, North Carolina, might already be the fastest guy on a team loaded with fast guys. He could eventually assume a role similar to that of Travis Etienne, the ACC player of the year in 2018 and 2019. Shipley has to climb because the Tigers have depth, but could move up quickly. - AP College Football
