WEEK 2 ACC CO-QUARTERBACK OF THE WEEK: Kyle McCord, Syracuse, QB, Mt. Laurel, New Jersey,...McCord notched new career highs for the second week in a row in multiple statistical categories to lead Syracuse to a victory over No. 23 Georgia Tech. McCord completed 32-of-46 passing attempts for 381 yards and four touchdowns. His completions, attempts and yards were all career highs, and the four touchdown throws matched his career high, set in Week 1 versus Ohio. McCord currently leads the nation with eight touchdown passes through two weeks of the season and has 735 yards passing, which leads the ACC and is third in the FBS. McCord was named one of the eight Manning Award Stars of the Week. - ACC Football

Kyle McCord threw for a career-high 354 yards and four touchdowns, Trebor Pena tallied three scores, and Syracuse rebounded from a sluggish start to down Ohio 38-22 Saturday as the Fran Brown era got off to a successful start. The Bobcats dominated the heavily favored Orange in the first quarter, accumulating 109 yards of total offense to Syracuse’s nine, and held the ball for 13:51. But Syracuse, trailing 6-0 on two Gianni Spetic first-quarter field goals, came alive in the second quarter behind McCord, a transfer from Ohio State making his Syracuse debut.

McCord connected on a 28-yard scoring play down the left side to pre-season All-ACC pick Oronde Gadsden II, making his first start since a season-ending Lisfranc injury a year ago. With just five seconds to go in the half, McCord found Pena on a 20-yard strike, giving Syracuse a 17-9 lead at the half. The Orange lengthened their lead in the third on a one-handed 5-yard touchdown grab by LeQuint Allen and a 14-yard score to Pena. The game marked the head coaching debut for Brown, a former defensive backs coach at Georgia, who was hired in December replacing Dino Babers. - AP College Football

Making the playoff begins with the quarterback. Ohio State has six, including Oregon State transfer Tristan Gebbia, incoming freshman Lincoln Kienholz and preferred walk-ons Mason Maggs and Chad Ray. But the real drama is between McCord and Brown. Is either a future NFL draft pick? Do they have to be? Five quarterbacks who led their schools to the CFP failed to get drafted: Kelly Bryant (Clemson), Jake Browning (Washington), J.T. Barrett (Ohio State), Jake Coker (Alabama) and Blake Sims (Alabama). So it can happen, but not recently. Bryant (2020) was the last to get passed over on draft day. There is a chance Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett and TCU quarterback Max Duggan go undrafted next month, but most draftniks think they will get picked in the mid-to-lower rounds.

What about McCord and Brown? We just don't know. In McCord's case, we have seen so little of him. In Brown's case, we have seen even less. I still don't understand why Ohio State coach Ryan Day barely played McCord last season, especially in games that had been decided midway through the third quarter. The second-year quarterback attempted just 20 passes, completing 16 for 190 yards and a touchdown. He actually saw more playing time as a freshman, completing 25 of 38 attempts for 416 yards and two TDs. McCord, who came to Columbus as a five-star recruit, has not had much opportunity to shine. Is he a star? A meteor? A black hole? Who knows? What can be said with confidence is McCord/Brown will be challenged to match Stroud's performance as a poised passer who finds receivers better than any quarterback in Ohio State history. - Columbus Dispatch

Ryan Day has never been in a hurry to name a starting quarterback at Ohio State. Both of the previous announcements during his coaching tenure, in 2021 and 2019, came in late August, exactly 12 days before the Buckeyes were to open their seasons. As the high-profile position battles lasted beyond spring practice, they continued for months of the offseason with little divulged about the pecking order among the passers, even as C.J. Stroud and Justin Fields were viewed as the favorites. But the coming competition between junior Kyle McCord and redshirt freshman Devin Brown to replace Stroud, who left for the NFL last month, could be on a faster timeline.

Day said he hopes one of them emerges in the weeks ahead and earns the right to be named the starter following spring practice. "The way that our dynamic is, it'd be great for our program to be able to do that," Day said. "There were times in the past when I didn't see that happening. I'm hoping that can happen. If it doesn't, it doesn't, but some vision on who the starter is coming out of spring would be nice." That apparent openness to picking a starting quarterback sooner rather than later only adds to the stakes of the 15 spring practices beginning on March 7. Will McCord or Brown position himself to win the job? - Columbus Dispatch

Spring football is right around the corner for the Ohio State football team, and the sessions will conclude with the spring game on April 15. The game will serve as the 15th and final practice that teams are allowed over a 34-day period. Of those 15 practices, on 12 are allowed to involve contact and eight can have tackling. There will be three practices that are dedicated to being 11-on-11 scrimmages, with the spring game being the only one open to the public. The scrimmage will be the first chance for fans to see the 2023 Buckeyes and get a look at the battle between Devin Brown and Kyle McCord to succeed C.J. Stroud as starting quarterback. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

After three tough games -- including an upset by Oregon two weeks ago -- No. 10 Ohio State got a chance to break in another freshman quarterback and restore some confidence before heading into the teeth of the conference schedule. The 59-7 rout of Akron on Saturday night likely won't impress poll voters much, but with so many freshmen on the field the Buckeyes (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) benefited from the extra reps and wide margin for error. "You can certainly see there's a lot of guys out there who desperately need these snaps and this experience to keep building," coach Ryan Day said. True freshman quarterback Kyle McCord overcame early jitters to throw for 319 yards and two touchdowns, and true freshman TreVeyon Henderson ran for 93 yards and two scores in the first half before being done for the day.

McCord got the nod in place of C.J. Stroud, a freshman who started the first three games but has a sore shoulder and got a breather against the seven-touchdown underdog. McCord was 13 for 18 and got credit for the first touchdown pass of his career when Chris Olave turned a jet sweep toss into a 5-yard score in the first quarter. Henderson, who broke the school's single-game freshman rushing record last week - and in the following days picked up endorsement deals with a fast-food restaurant and a Columbus car dealer that netted him a used Camaro - continued to blossom as the next potential Ohio State star. He averaged 11.6 yards per carry before leaving with the Buckeyes leading 38-7 at the half. He's averaging 9.5 yards per carry and has six touchdowns in the first four games. - Ohio State/AP College Football

Quarterback Kyle McCord became the seventh member of Ohio State's freshman class of 2021 to lose his black stripe. He reached the milestone following practice Thursday and addressed teammates, as seen in a video posted on the team's official Twitter account. "It's a blessing to be here and be a part of the brotherhood," McCord said. "Shoutout to the defense for pushing me every single day, offensive line protecting me, Zone 6 (wide receivers) doing your thing, Tote Nation (running backs) helping me out. So shoutout to the unit. Go Bucks."

In a ritual carried over from former coach Urban Meyer's tenure, freshmen and other newcomers to the program have black stripes placed along the center of their helmets. To officially become Buckeyes, they must shed the stripe in favor of the traditional scarlet one. McCord, a five-star recruit from Philadelphia who enrolled in the university in January, remains in a preseason camp competition with redshirt freshmen Jack Miller and C.J. Stroud for the starting quarterback job. - Columbus Dispatch
