TJ McMahon threw for a career-high 334 yards, including a go-ahead 23-yard touchdown to Bradley Rozner with 25 seconds left, and Rice edged UTEP 37-30 on Thursday night. Rice (5-4, 3-2 Conference USA) reached five wins in a season for the first time sinc e 2015. UTEP backup QB Calvin Brownholtz ran for a 25-yard score to tie the game at 27-all with 11:17 left in the fourth quarter. The teams traded field goals with UTEP tying it with 2:35 left.Rice used back-to-back 13-yard plays to get to midfiel d and McMahon later found Rozner in the corner of the end zone for their sixth connection of the game. McMahon was 21 of 31 with two touchdowns and one interception, and Rozner had 142 receiving yards and a score. Christian VanSickle made field goals of 43, 21 and 38. Brownholtz was 7-of-10 passing for 56 yards and he carried it eight times for 64 yards for UTEP (4-6, 2-4). Gavin Baechle also made three field goals, with a long of 51. - Rice/AP College Football

TJ McMahon threw for three touchdowns, ran for a fourth and Juma Otoviano scored in overtime to lift Rice past Louisiana Tech 42-41 on Saturday, wrecking the Bulldogs' homecoming in the process. McMahon scored on a 64-yard run and Luke McCaffery on a 17- yard run as Rice erased a six-point fourth-quarter deficit and took a 35-27 lead with 3:57 remaining. Matthew Downing led the Bulldogs on a potential game-tying drive but was injured and taken out of the game with Louisiana Tech at the 34-yard line with 43 seconds remaining. Landry Lyddy, a freshman who had attempted two passes this season, led the Bulldogs the rest of the way, hitting Cyrus Allen for a 19-yard touchdown and Tre Harris for the 2-point conversion that sent the game to overtime.In overtime, Otoviano gave Rice the lead with a 4-yard run then Lyddy and Harris connected from 18-yards out but Lyddy's 2-point pass was overthrown. McMahon completed 16 of 27 passes for 208 yards for the Owls (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA). McCaffrey had 10 re ceptions for 171 yards with two receiving touchdowns and one on the ground. Harris had three TD catches for La Tech (2-5, 1-2), catching eight passes for 92 yards. Downing was 12 of 24 for 159 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. TJ McMahon threw for 303 yards with three touchdown passes to lead Rice over Louisiana-Lafayette 33-21 on Saturday night in a Conference USA opener. McMahon, who threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Luke McCaffrey late in the second quarter, hit Bradley Roz ner for a 12-yard score early in the third. McCaffrey added a 6-yard TD pass to McCaffrey in the fourth quarter. Louisiana-Lafayette (2-1, 0-1) built a 14-13 halftime lead behind Caleb Anderson's pick-6 and Chandler Fields' 11-yard touchdown pass to Terr ence Williams. Chris Smith broke loose for a 22-yard touchdown to pull the Ragin' Cajuns to 27-21 with 9:17 left. But on the ensuing possession, Rice (2-1, 1-0) ate up more than six minutes with an 11-play, 70-yard drive capped by Ari Broussard's 2-yard touchdown run. TJ McMahon threw four touchdown passes and added a 9-yard scoring run, Gabe Taylor returned an interception 91 yards for a score and Rice beat McNeese 52-10 Saturday night. McMahon completed 20 of 29 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns with no inter ceptions. Bradley Rozner finished with three receptions for 101 yards, including TD catches of 13 and 75 yards. Ari Broussard added 71 yards rushing on 17 carries, including a 2-yard touchdown that gave the Owls a 31-0 halftime lead. Deonta McMahon rippe d off a 62-yard touchdown run for McNeese (0-2) on the second play from scrimmage in the second half but Rozner's long TD came just 11 seconds later and Jack Bradley's 17-yard touchdown reception with 9:35 left in the third quarter made it 45-7. TJ McMahon threw two late touchdown passes - including a 3-yarder to Cedric Patterson III with 61 seconds remaining - and Rice rallied for a 35-31 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday. Rice (4-8, 3-5 Conference USA) led 14-10 at halftime, but JD Head connected with Smoke Harris for a 5-yard score to give Louisiana Tech (3-9, 2-6) a 17-14 lead midway through the third quarter. The Owls regained the lead on Cameron Montgomery's 7-yard TD run on the ensuing possession, but Head scored on a 22-yard run a nd the Bulldogs took a 24-21 lead into the final quarter. Head hit Griffin Hebert for a 6-yard score and Louisiana Tech led 31-21 with 13:10 left to play.McMahon pulled the Owls within three points on a 31-yard scoring strike to August Pitre III w ith 4:12 remaining. Rice forced a punt with 1:19 to go and Sean Fresch returned it 48 yards to the Louisiana Tech 18-yard line. Three plays later McMahon hit Patterson for the go-ahead score. Head drove the Bulldogs to a first down at the Rice 33, but Ga be Taylor came up with an interception with 12 seconds left to preserve the win.
