Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall, the three-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year who entered the transfer portal this month but remained with the Chanticleers for the Birmingham Bowl, was injured Tuesday night in a 53-29 loss to East Ca rolina. On what will presumably be McCall's final play in a Coastal Carolina uniform, the quarterback authored a 9-yard touchdown run. He was hit while tumbling into the end zone and never returned to the game. Coastal Carolina lost coach Jamey Chadwell to Liberty and hired North Carolina State offensive coordinator Tim Beck to lead the program. Don't be surprised if McCall winds up at Liberty when he exits the portal. - News Observer

Injured Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall could miss the rest of the season for the 22nd-ranked Chanticleers, coach Jamey Chadwell said. McCall, a 6-foot-3, 209-pound redshirt sophomore from Indian Trail, North Carolina, missed last weekend's 2 8-8 win at Georgia Southern with what the school called an upper-body injury. "We don't know how long he's going to be out," Chadwell said Monday on a Sun Belt Conference coaches teleconference. "We hope to get him back before the end of the regular seas on." Chadwell said McCall was hurt during a 35-28 victory over Troy on Oct. 28. McCall came out for several plays in the third quarter after dropping to the turf. However, he returned to the game and said during postgame interviews that he felt OK. Chadw ell said McCall has had several tests to pinpoint the problem and he is hopeful his standout passer, the FBS leader in pass efficiency, will be back. "He could be out the rest of the season, based on the recovery ... he could come back before then," Chad well said. "We really don't have a complete answer right now." Senior Bryce Carpenter filled in for McCall against Georgia Southern and will start Saturday when the Chants (8-1, 4-1 Sun Belt) take on Georgia State (4-5, 3-2). Carpenter has made nine care er starts for Coastal Carolina. - AP College Football

Facing another tight finish with Troy, Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Chadwell remembered something Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians puts on his play sheet: "No risk it, no biscuit." Chadwell took the risk on a fake punt with about 3 minutes left an d a one-score lead as No. 24 Coastal Carolina held off Troy 35-28 on Thursday night, rebounding from its first loss of the season at Appalachian State last time out. The result was a 12-yard run for the first down by defensive tackle C.J. Brewer that kep t the drive going. "I felt like last week, from a play-calling standpoint, I got a little apprehensive," Chadwell said. "I said, Hey, this week we're going for it." The successful run on fourth-and-4 let Coastal Carolina (7-1, 3-1 Sun Belt Conference) ho ld the ball until the final 25 seconds on the way to their 12th straight home victory. Grayson McCall threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a third touchdown as the Chanticleers overcame a slow start to beat Troy (4-4, 2-2) for a third straight time. "Obviously, we didn't play our best ball, but we found a way and now it's on to the next one," McCall said. McCall connected on scoring throws of 66 yards to Jaivon Heiligh and 71 yards to Braydon Bennett. Still, Troy (4-4, 2-2) mad e it a one-score game on Gunnar Watson's 18-yard touchdown pass to Tez Johnson to draw within 35-28 with 4:52 to go. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Grayson McCall threw a scare into Coastal Carolina fans after finishing off Louisiana Monroe on Saturday. McCall threw for 212 yards on 13-of-13 passing with two touchdowns to Isaiah Likely as the 16th-ranked Chanticleers rolled to a 59-6 victory to star t Sun Belt Conference play Saturday. The Chanticleers (1-0 Sun Belt) started 5-0 for a second straight season and have won 16 of their past 17 the last two seasons. McCall played the first two quarters. When he returned to the sidelines for the second ha lf, he had a walking boot on his left foot. Not to worry, Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Chadwell said.McCall had his left ankle rolled on during the game, he said, and the boot was just extra protection to prevent anyone else accidently stepping on his foot. "Grayson was taken out from a precautionary standpoint. He wasn't going to come back in the second half anyway," Chadwell said. McCall was moving easily in the boot. Chadwell expects McCall to be ready when the Chanticleers face Arkansas State next Thursday. And they'll certainly need him to keep winning. McCall was already the FBS leader in completion percentage and had little trouble keeping that going against the Warhawks (2-2, 1-1). He led Coastal Carolina to scores on all five first-half possessions for a 38-3 lead at the break, then watched the rest of the game from the sidelines. Likely had five receptions for 95 yards, including scoring catches of 5 and 30 yards from McCall. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Coastal Carolina's defense loves watching the Chanticleers' offense operate, as long as it's on game days and not in practice. Both sides of the ball stood strong Saturday as the 17th-ranked Chants scored on eight of nine possessions for a 53-3 victory t hat sent UMass to its 15th consecutive loss. Chants linebacker Silas Kelly said the strength of the defense directly correlates to the offense since they go after each other at practice. "Those guys are insane," Kelly said. "They're really, really good. And seeing them at practice has a lot to do with it, too. Hopefully, when you play against guys like that, it makes games a little bit easier." Things looked easy for the Chants in this one as they opened 4-0 for a second straight season. The offense pil ed up 558 yards and the defense held a shutout until midway through the fourth quarter. "As I said, playing together helps," Kelly said. "We just want to have a lot of fun out there." Grayson McCall threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third.Jai von Heiligh had five catches for 118 yards receiving, the fifth time in the past six games he's surpassed the century mark. Backup receiver Tyson Mobley a touchdown catch and another on the ground. "Everybody on the offense is making plays," Mobley said. "That's just the way it is." The Chanticleers have won 15 of their past 16 games. They also cranked things up after a subpar offensive showing in 28-25 win at Buffalo last week. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Grayson McCall learned a lot of things from Coastal Carolina's breakthrough season last year. He's ready to carry them into this fall. "Now, we know the places we can go," McCall said. Especially with McCall in charge of the Chanticleers' offense. McCall threw for 262 yards and a touchdown and No. 22 Coastal Carolina scored on its first seven possessions in a season-opening 52-14 victory over The Citadel on Thursday night. "I do think the expectations are higher than last year," McCall s aid. "My job is to come in each week and go 1-0. Try and stay away from that stuff and focus on the team." McCall, last year's Sun Belt offensive player of the year, directed an efficient, dynamic offense that scored touchdowns the first four times it ha d the ball. After a field goal to close the opening half, the Chants scored TDs on its first two series of the third quarter.
