Mike Wright led three scoring drives, Robert Fitzgerald intercepted a pass in the final minute and Northwestern won the first game in its temporary lakefront stadium, beating Miami (Ohio) 13-6 in the season opener on Saturday. Miami had the ball on the N orthwestern 35 when Brett Gabbert tried to hit Reggie Virgil. Fitzgerald picked off the pass at the 25, helping the Wildcats open their second season under coach David Braun on a triumphant note.They did it in a setting as unique as any, before a sellout crowd of 12,023 not counting the boats bobbing in the background on Lake Michigan. The stadium where they'll play the majority of their home games the next two seasons while a new home is built about a mile west has a bit of a high school or smal l college feel, albeit with a postcard view. The capacity is far fewer than at the old Ryan Field (47,000) and the new one (35,000) being built on that site, let alone other venues in the Big Ten. It would be surprising if quarterback Will Rogers lost his starting job entering his senior season. He has started 33 of 35 games in three seasons, holds the SEC career completions record (1,159) and owns the MSU record for career passing yards (10,689) and touchdowns (82). However, Vanderbilt transfer Mike Wright didn't come to Starkville looking to spend his senior season on the bench. It'll be interesting to see if Wright can push for Rogers' job or if he earns a role running special packages in Barb ay's offense. - The Clarion Ledger

Mississippi State added a familiar name to its quarterbacks room Sunday afternoon. Former Vanderbilt quarterback Mike Wright committed to the Bulldogs on Sunday, he announced on Twitter. Wright entered the transfer portal Dec. 5 at the end of the 2022 se ason. Mostly playing behind AJ Swann for the Commodores, Wright completed 85 of 148 passes this season with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. He finished the year with a quarterback rating of 57.7.Wright also ran 71 times for 517 yards and fiv e touchdowns in 2022. Wright's second career start at quarterback for Vanderbilt came against Mississippi State. Then a sophomore, he delivered a solid showing, going 12 of 17 for 122 yards and a pick in a blowout win for the Bulldogs. Wright is a native of Fayetteville, Georgia. Mike Wright threw three touchdown passes and Vanderbilt upset Florida 31-24 on Saturday afternoon for its second straight Southeastern Conference victory. Vanderbilt (5-6, 2-5) took a 7-3 lead and never looked back against Florida (6-5, 3-5). The loss en ded a two-game win streak for the Gators, who had won their last eight games against Vanderbilt. Florida opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal by Adam Mihalek and managed nothing but a 44-yard Mihalek field goal the rest of the half. Vanderbilt to ok a 7-3 lead in the second quarter when Mike Wright connected with Jayden McGowan for a 10-yard touchdown. The Commodores weren't finished. With 3:22 left in the first half, Florida's Jason Marshall Jr. fumbled a punt from Vanderbilt's Matthew Hayball a t the Gators' 5-yard line. The ball rolled into the end zone where it was recovered by Wesley Schelling for the touchdown and a 14-6 Vanderbilt lead at the half.Florida struck on its first possession of the third quarter. Anthony Richardson found running back Montrell Johnson Jr. on the right side for a 3-yard scoring pass to get the Gators within 14-12. A two-point conversion pass failed. Wright connected with flanker Gavin Schoenwald for a 7-yard touchdown with 3:22 left in the third and Vander bilt led 21-12. Jaylen Mahoney picked off a Richardson pass and the Commodores took over at the Florida 28-yard line. Wright fired a scoring strike to tight end Ben Bresnahan on first down and the Commodores took a 28-12 lead into the final quarter. Rich ardson connected with Daejon Reynolds for a 74-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but Florida trailed 28-18 after the two-point conversion pass failed again. Joseph Bulovas kicked a 27-yard field goal with 4:38 left to play to extend Vanderbilt' s lead to 31-18. Finished the game 12-of-23 for 184 passing yards and one touchdown. Added 126 rushing yards and one score on the ground, averaging 11.5 yards per carry. The performance marked his second 100-yard rushing game on the season. Broke a 59-yard rushing score in the first quarter, marking Vanderbilt's second-longest rush on the year. Mike Wright ran 59 yards for a touchdown and completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Will Sheppard with 32 seconds left for a 24-21 win over Kentucky Saturday, snapping a 26-game Southeastern Conference losing streak. Wright was named the Commodores' start ing quarterback to start the season but was benched following a 45-25 loss to Wake Forest September 10, Freshman AJ Swann started the last six games but was ruled out against Kentucky due to an injury.Kentucky (6-4, 3-4) appeared to have survived the Vandy effort after Chris Rodriguez twice gave the Wildcats a lead, scoring from the 5 for a 15-14 lead, then racing 72 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-17 with 5:03 left in the game. Vandy's game-winning drive appeared stalled, but Octavious Oxend ine's personal foul wiped out a Tyrell Ajian interception. Given new life, Wright completed a 40-yard pass to Quincy Skinner Jr. to the Kentucky 9 on fourth-and-11 to set up the winning score. Wright was 12 of 23 passing for 184 yards with an interceptio n, and ran for 126 yards. Ray Davis added 129 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Commodores (4-6, 1-5). Mike Wright scored a program record six touchdowns throwing for 245 yards and running for 84 more as Vanderbilt beat Elon 42-31 Saturday night. With the victory, the Commodores now have matched coach Clark Lea's win total for all of his debut season in t he first two games to start this season. It's Vanderbilt's first 2-0 start since 2018 as the Commodores spoiled Elon's season opener. Matthew McKay and Elon sure made it interesting late after pulling within 11. The Phoenix recovered an onside kick. Vand erbilt forced a turnover and stopped a pair of fourth-and-1 attempts in the final 3:19, the second just outside its own goal line with 49 seconds left.Wright, who scored four touchdowns in Vanderbilt's season-opening win in Hawaii, topped the prev ious record matched by Earl Bennett against Kentucky in 2005 and set by Frank Mordica with five TDs against Air Force in 1978. The quarterback put Vanderbilt ahead to stay with a 5-yard TD run, then dropped the ball into Jayden McGowan's hands for a 75-y ard catch and run up the Vanderbilt sideline. Wright then made it a 21-0 lead with a 6-yard TD to Will Sheppard late in the first quarter. His 26-yarder to Sheppard made it 28-10 before halftime. Wright became Vandy's first quarterback with multiple TD r uns in consecutive games since Greg Zolman in 1999 with a 44-yard run early in the third for his fifth TD of the game and a 35-10 lead. Mike Wright factored into four touchdowns and Vanderbilt used a 35-point third quarter to pull away from Hawaii 63-10 in a season opener on Saturday. The Commodores rolled up 601 yards of total offense, including 404 rushing to pick up their first win si nce Oct. 2, 2021. It was just the third victory under second-year coach Clark Lea. Wright threw for 146 yards on 13-of-21 passing without an interception. Both of his touchdown passes went to Will Sheppard, covering 1 and 15 yards. Wright also ran for 16 3 yards and two scores, including an 87-yard touchdown, on only 13 carries.Vanderbilt's defense scored two touchdowns on fumble returns. Anfernee Orji snagged the first one out of the air after Maxwell Worship jarred it loose and returned it 28 ya rds to the end zone with 21 seconds left in the opening quarter. CJ Taylor scored from 14 yards out on a third-quarter scoop-and-score after Elijah McAllister forced the fumble. The Rainbow Warriors posted 358 total yards. Quarterbacks Brayden Schager an d Joey Yellen combined to threw for 250 yards on 28-of-55 passing. Jonah Panoke caught seven passes for 101 yards. Vanderbilt led 21-10 at halftime in the first match-up between the teams. It was the Commodores first win to open a season since 2018. In Clark Lea's second season at the helm, Vanderbilt football is unlikely to make a bowl game or contend in the SEC. Instead, the name of the game is progress. After a 2-10 season and a second straight year without winning an SEC game, Lea needs to show the program is heading in the right direction to keep up with improved recruiting. The Commodores concluded preseason practice Friday before heading to Hawaii to open their season Aug. 27.Here's where Vanderbilt believes it has improved the most f rom last year after the end of camp: Lea noted a primary area of growth for Mike Wright has been emotionally. Wright is known as a leader with a galvanizing presence - a reason he was named not only the starting quarterback but a captain for 2022. "Playi ng that position is maintaining that voice when you're dealing with your own disappointment, your own frustration, and that's where I want to continue to see growth and maturity," Lea said. "Again, he's not all the way there yet, but I don't judge him fo r that. I think that's part of growth...I think he desires to be great in that role." At 6-foot-4, 190-pounds, Wright's persona stems not so much from his physical stature but from his aura, which comes in handy for a quarterback.. An infectious smile and radiant energy make him recognizable throughout campus. He stepped in as the starter when Ken Seals was injured and looked right at home. Game was at South Carolina and he completed 11-of-21 passes for 206 yards while rushing for another 43. Started five of the last si x games of the season and appeared in 10 of 12.
