Avantae Williams, Transfer, Player News

Another Miami Hurricane is headed into the transfer portal and this time it's a player who once seemed to be on a star trajectory. After falling out of favor and seeing a shrunken role as a sophomore, Avantae Williams is transferring from Miami, he annou nced on Twitter. Williams had a tumultous career with the Hurricanes - including a health issue, a domestic-violence accusation and, ultimately, an impressive freshman season in 2021 - and is now planning to head elsewhere to wrap up his college career. The safety will have three years of eligibility left after a medical issue kept him off the field for the entire 2020 season.Williams is the seventh Miami to announce his intentions to transfer this month and the fourth defensive back. The others so far are running back Thaddius Franklin Jr., defensive lineman Allan Haye and Elijah Roberts, and defensive backs Gilbert Frierson, Jalen Harrell and Keshawn Washington. Williams is also maybe the Hurricanes' highest profile entrant so far. The 6-foot, 198-pound defensive back was Miami's top-ranked addition in the Class of 2020, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. - Miami Herald

In his first comments to reporters since Avantae Williams was reinstated, Miami Hurricanes coach Manny Diaz said the second-year safety will be out for the team's first six games of the season, which starts Saturday against Alabama at Mercedes-Benz Stadi um in Atlanta. "Avantae hasn't practiced, run or done anything physically," Diaz said Monday. "He's just going to work with our strength and conditioning staff for the next two weeks. It'd be unfair to dunk him right into the middle of practices. The guy did miss a training camp. We have to take that into account."The Hurricanes officially reinstated Williams on Sunday after the felony charges that resulted in his dismissal were dropped on Aug. 20. Williams was dismissed from the program on July 22 after he was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated battery against his pregnant ex-girlfriend earlier that week, according to Miami-Dade County's arrest records. Aggravated battery on a pregnant woman is a felony in Florida. A copy of t he arrest affidavit from July stated Williams got into a "verbal dispute" with his ex-girlfriend on July 21 before telling her to leave the apartment they lived in together. - Sun Sentinel

Avantae Williams will be a Miami Hurricane again. Thirty-five days after the University of Miami dismissed Williams from the football program because of allegations of domestic violence against his former girlfriend, and six days after Miami-Dade prosecu tors declined to press charges, Williams' attorney said he was informed that Williams will be reinstated to UM. Williams initially met with UM officials to discuss the situation Wednesday via Zoom. He was expected to arrive back in Miami on Thursday from near his home in DeLand. UM classes began this past Monday. Williams, 20, was rated the nation's No. 1 safety by Rivals.com in the 2020 recruiting class. He sat out his first season in 2020 because of an undisclosed medical issue, but was set to play th is season, which begins Sept. 4 against No. 1 Alabama. - Miami Herald

Avantae Williams is no longer a Miami Hurricane. On the same day University of Miami coach Manny Diaz and his three star players were repping the new and improved Hurricanes at the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff, one of their top young safeti es was arrested and jailed. The Hurricanes announced Thursday evening that Williams "has been dismissed from the football program." UM released a statement earlier Thursday that the second-year freshman Williams, 20, who didn't play last season because o f a medical issue, was arrested by the Miami-Dade Police Department.Court records show he was charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant victim. He was booked into a Miami-Dade jail late Wednesday, and remained there until posting bond Thursday afternoon. According to a police report obtained by the Herald, Williams' arrest stemmed from an argument with his child's mother, who is also 31 weeks pregnant with his baby. The two had been living together in West Kendall, although they are "ex-girlf riend/boyfriend," the report said. The two got into an argument Wednesday over Williams "being involved with another woman," the report said. "When I return from practice you need to be gone," he allegedly told the woman. - Miami Herald
