After Tyler Van Dyke's disappointing season in 2022 that ended with the Hurricanes quarterback missing most of the second half of the season due to injury, rumors swirled that the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year could seek greener pastures elsewhere. That di d not come to pass. Instead, the rising fourth-year signal-caller played an integral role in bringing more players to UM. Cristobal said Van Dyke even cut short a trip home to see his family to participate in a recruiting weekend, flying back from Connec ticut to Florida to pitch the Hurricanes to prospective players. "A lot of guys," Cristobal said, "they would've ran to the hills...Instead, he was instrumental in getting a lot of these guys on board and signing them." Van Dyke finished last season with 1,835 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and a 63.2 completion percentage. He got off to a slow start before getting into a groove against North Carolina and Virginia Tech. However, he suffered an injury against Duke on Oct. 22 and threw only 16 passes the re st of the year.Cristobal said Miami's offensive system under Gattis did not work with Van Dyke and UM's roster last season, especially once injuries began to take their toll on starting players. "Systematically, it just didn't fit," Cristobal said . "Those systems were phenomenal when we were at Alabama and at Oregon. The track record is what it is: They worked and they worked well. But when you're in a roster transition and whatnot, and it doesn't quite fit, you have to keep finding tweaks, and y ou've got to keep finding ways to make things work. And we didn't do a good enough job when the injuries piled up." - Sun Sentinel

Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal would not say late Wednesday morning whether quarterback Tyler Van Dyke is out for Saturday's Virginia game, amid a report that Jake Garcia will start. Cristobal, on a Zoom conference call with the media, said Van D yke "has improved a bunch" and that "the status [for Virginia] is still unknown and we will determine that a little bit later. Jake has practiced really well so we feel confident obviously in the room. We'll have an update by Friday, closer to game time. " A bit later in the call, Cristobal was asked if Van Dyke practiced this week. "Tyler has practiced very little,'' the coach said. "Jake has taken a lot of the reps. Jacurri [Brown] has taken a bunch of reps. Peyton Matocha has taken a good amount of re ps as well. We're preparing everybody, with Jake taking the majority of reps thus far. "We'll see where we are by late Thursday, late Friday." - Miami Herald

Key'Shawn Smith caught a 35-yard flea-flicker touchdown from Tyler Van Dyke, part of a third-quarter burst that lifted No. 15 Miami past Southern Miss 30-7 on Saturday. Smith's scoring grab - the only play of that drive - came 2:14 after Thaddius Frankli n Jr.'s 7-yard touchdown run gave Miami (2-0) a bit of breathing room after the Hurricanes trailed for almost the entire second quarter. Henry Parrish had a 1-yard touchdown run late in the first half for the Hurricanes. Parrish rushed for 102 yards and Franklin added 66 more for Miami, which has started its season with two wins for only the seventh time in the past 18 seasons. Van Dyke completed 19 of 29 passes for 230 yards and the score, plus was intercepted once.Jason Brownlee caught a 32-yar d touchdown pass from Zach Wilcke for Southern Miss (0-2). That capped a six-play, 75-yard drive for the Golden Eagles -- but they managed only 122 yards on their next seven drives, five of which ended in punts, one with an interception in the end zone a nd the other with a fumble. Frank Gore Jr., the son of Miami Hall of Famer Frank Gore, was held largely in check by the Hurricanes' defense in his return to his hometown. Gore Jr. had seven carries for 10 yards, and two catches for 18 more yards. That's after he rushed for 178 yards last week in Southern Miss' opening-game loss to Liberty. Frank Ladson Jr. has been around winners. The former Clemson wide receiver reached the College Football Playoff twice with the Tigers, making it to the national title game as a freshman in 2019. The other players on the Hurricanes can only inquire about what those big games are like. "Some of the guys asked me about it," Ladson said. "They asked what's the biggest game you've ever played in, the loudest game you ever played in?' It's just different. It's a different type of atmosphere when you're in the playoff and you're playing for a championship game. It's different at the end of the game: they bring the stage out, confetti will fall. So it's a different feel." Ladson hopes to help the Hurricanes reach that goal by providing a big, new target for qu arterback Tyler Van Dyke. Ladson sees similarities between his new quarterback and the one who led those Tigers teams to the playoffs: Trevor Lawrence. "Just being a student of the game, being a perfectionist, being a student of the game," Ladson said. " Just wanting the best for everybody and demanding that from everybody around him - come to work every day...Great arm talent, smart decision-maker." - Sun Sentinel

Tyler Van Dyke, from Glastonbury, Connecticut, worked with former NFL stars Peyton and Eli Manning, as well as some of the nation's finest college quarterbacks at the Manning Passing Academy this summer. He said he grew up "a huge Eagles" and "Donovan Mc Nabb fan." "He was a role model for me just watching the games," Van Dyke told reporters at the ACC media days, eliciting a response on Twitter from McNabb, who posted a video of the quarterback. "You just never know who's watching you," McNabb said. "Be a pro at all times and stay on your grind." Known as a workout fanatic since his freshman year in 2020, Van Dyke thrives on pushing his body physically and mentally. He said "probably 75 to 80 percent of the install of new coordinator Josh Gattis' s offense is in," and that he has improved greatly in reading coverages and "understanding what the defense is going to do." This summer has been more organized with player-led 7-on-7s every Tuesday and Thursday and additional opportunities, though still limited, to work with coaches, per new NCAA rules. "Sometimes in games last year reading coverages would get to me and I would kind of go blind out there and not really understand what was going on," Van Dyke said. "There were a few times I saw it reall y well. I'm trying to get to that point where I'm really consistent." - Miami Herald

The Miami Hurricanes hope the final season of Atlantic Coast Conference divisions in 2022 will be their best since they joined the league in 2004 and divisions were created in 2005. The national college football media believes it might be, with one cruci al missing ingredient. The majority of a media contingent of 164 voters forecast the Hurricanes to win the league's Coastal Division and meet the Atlantic Division's Clemson Tigers in the Dec. 3 ACC championship at Bank of America Stadium - with Clemson predicted to emerge victorious for what would be its seventh ACC football title in nine years. Clemson was the favorite to win the conference championship in the poll that was released Tuesday, receiving 103 of the 164 total votes to take the ACC title a nd 111 votes to win the Atlantic Division.UM was the favorite to win the Coastal, with 98 first-place votes. The Canes received eight votes to win the conference championship, third overall behind Clemson and North Carolina State (38). The Tigers posted a 10-3 record last season, but it was Wake Forest that won the Atlantic Division before falling to the Coastal's Pittsburgh in the league championship game. Miami (7-5 overall, 5-3 ACC) finished second in the Coastal last season. The media has Pit t finishing second in the Coastal to UM this season. The Hurricanes, who won national titles in 1983, '87, '89, '91 and 2001, have made it to the ACC title game only once - in 2017 when they went 10-3 and fell to Clemson 38-3 in the ACC title game. - Mia mi Herald

University of Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, tight end Will Mallory and defensive end Jahfari Harvey had just landed in Charlotte and were en route with coach Mario Cristobal to the Westin for the ACC media days, when the three made a pact. "Yeah, we' re coming back here in December,'' they said. "That's the mindset first and foremost,'' Van Dyke, the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, told reporters Thursday at the ACC Football Kickoff. "We're in the Coastal [Division] and getting her e and winning that ACC championship." If the Canes do win the ACC title Dec. 3 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, it would be the first league title for Miami since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004. This will be UM's final opportunity to win the Coastal, since the conference is doing away with divisions beginning next season, when all 14 teams will battle for the top two spots to face each other in the ACC title game.Van Dyke, a third-year sophomore, already this week was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the player of the year at season's end, as well as the Davey O'Brien Award. He played in 10 games last season and started the final nine, completing 202 of 324 passes (62.3 percent) for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns, with six interceptions. Van Dyke, 6-4 and 224 pounds, ended the season with six consecutive games with at least 300 passing yards and at least three touchdown passes, becoming the first Power 5 quarterback quarterback to do so in a sin gle season since LSU's Joe Burrow in 2019, when he won the Heisman Trophy. The painful, exhausting 2022 NFL Draft for the Miami Hurricanes is over, and analysts have immediately turned to 2023, prognosticating the college football players who will go highest when the draft is held April 27-29 in Kansas City. The Hurricanes' lon e player drafted this past weekend, defensive tackle Jonathan Ford, went 13th in the seventh-and-final round to the Green Bay Packers, extending the University of Miami's 48-year draft streak. But the only two players projected to be taken - safety Bubba Bolden and receiver Charleston Rambo-never heard their names called, instead signing as undrafted free agents.Hope and reality don't always align, but two Hurricanes are mentioned repeatedly to be taken in the first round next year. They are quar terback Tyler Van Dyke and the man who will be protecting his blind side, left tackle Zion Nelson. Van Dyke, who will be a third-year sophomore next season, had an extraordinary 2021 season, earning ACC Rookie of the Year and completing 202 of 324 passes (62.3 percent) for 2,931 yards, with six interceptions in 10 games. He ended with at least 300 passing yards and three touchdown passes in each of his last six games, becoming the first Power 5 quarterback to do so in six consecutive games in a single s eason since former LSU Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow did it in 2019. - Miami Herald

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was cuttingly candid in an interview with WQAM last week, particularly about how things have changed since Mario Cristobal took over. What's the biggest difference with the coaching change? "You can tell the di fference, the discipline and intensity that has changed the program so far," Van Dyke said. "There's no more BS going on around here. "Always have to be on time or you're going to face some discipline issues. [Paying attention to] small details will help us on the field. We need that standard and we've needed it for awhile. "With him as the head guy, with all that talent, there no more excuses. We have the best coaching staff in college football. There are no more excuses to be 7-5, 8-4. "We've got to b e better with discipline and details....That's what gets us beat. The biggest thing is player-led accountability. Me and a couple guys are doing that to make sure everybody does the right thing." - Miami Herald

Miami freshman Tyler Van Dyke outdueled Heisman Trophy candidate Kenny Pickett, throwing for 428 yards and three touchdowns as the Hurricanes beat Pickett and No. 17 Pittsburgh 38-34 on Saturday. Van Dyke completed 31 of 41 passes for the three scores an d an interception as Miami (4-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) defeated a ranked opponent for a second straight week. Pickett bolstered his Heisman resume by throwing for a school-record 519 yards and four touchdowns, but he also threw his second and th ird interceptions of the season, both of which led to huge momentum shifts. The first - by Miami's Tyrique Stevenson in the second quarter - led to a Jaylan Knighton 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Hurricanes a 31-17 halftime lead. The second - by freshman safety James Williams - came with 4:07 to play and Pitt driving for a go-ahead touchdown. Pickett threw behind star wide receiver Jordan Addison and Williams made a diving grab at the Miami 4. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Hurrica nes pushed the ball back to the Miami 2. Pitt nearly stuffed Knighton for a safety but the officials ruled Knighton advanced out of the end zone. The call stood upon review and the Hurricanes ran out the clock. Pitt (6-2, 3-1) remains in control of its d estiny in the ACC Coastal Division but any remote shot at crashing the College Football Playoff is long gone. - Miami/AP College Football

Tyler Van Dyke backed up his words. And Miami took a big step toward potentially salvaging its season. Van Dyke passed for 325 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Charleston Rambo, to lead the Hurricanes past No. 18 N.C. State 31-30 on Saturday nig ht - snapping what was a six-game losing streak against Power 5 opponents. The freshman, who started this season backing up the now-injured D'Eriq King, said earlier in the week that he didn't think N.C. State could stop Miami's offense. And after comple ting 25 of 33 passes, he proved himself right. "How about Tyler Van Dyke? I mean, it's unbelievable," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "Third conference game. And that defense is a hell of a defense. I mean, no one moves the ball on them." Correction: No one had.Jaylan Knighton had 166 total yards - 83 rushing, 83 more receiving - and a touchdown catch for Miami (3-4, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). Rambo finished with nine catches for 127 yards and Will Mallory had a touchdown grab for the Hurricane s. Devin Leary threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, plus ran for another for N.C. State. Thayer Thomas had both touchdown receptions for the Wolfpack (5-2, 2-1). "Obviously, we're very emotional, disappointed," N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said. "Gott a give Miami credit. We didn't make the plays we needed to make that we've been making and we helped them at some key moments." Van Dyke's comments were noticed by the Wolfpack, and Diaz said there was a slew of pregame trash talk in response. Didn't mat ter. The kid didn't blink. "I love Tyler at quarterback," Rambo said. - Miami/AP College Football

D'Eriq King was watching from the sideline, and his backups put on a show. Tyler Van Dyke passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start, and Miami tuned up for Atlantic Coast Conference play by racking up a school-record 739 yards o f offense in an easy 69-0 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday. He finished 10-of-11 passing.Van Dyke shared time with Jake Garcia, who completed 11 of 14 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns in his collegiate debut. "There is a good feeling in that locker room," Miami coach Manny Diaz sa id. "There's a good feeling not just because of the victory, not just because of the score, not because of the opponent. It's because of all the things that we emphasized this week in practice, the things we asked them to do, our energy on the sideline.. . we were excited to play today and that means we're on the right path." Miami (2-2) had eight players had either a scoring run or catch and the Hurricanes scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions. The 69 points was the fifth-most in school his tory, and the margin of victory was the third-largest behind only 77-0 and 77-7 wins over Savannah State in 2018 and 2013, respectively. - Miami/AP College Football
