  09/12/22 - QB Donovan SmithrSr/2025, Houston, 6-4, 235 (DS#32 QB) + More +

SEPT 12 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Texas Tech's Donovan Smith threw for a career-high 350 yards and combined for three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in Texas Tech's 33-30 double-overtime thriller over No. 25 Houston, its first win over a ranked opponent since 2019. It was also the Red Raiders' first victory over a ranked non-conference foe since defeating No. 20 Arizona in 1989. Smith found the end zone on a nine-yard rush to give the Red Raiders the game-winning TD. He also set career highs for completions (36) and attempts (58) while rushing for 31 yards on 21 carries, which included a career-long run of 27 yards on Texas Tech's final drive in regulation. That rush helped set up the game-tying field goal from Trey Wolff just before time expired. The victory improved Smith to 3-2 as a starter for a TTU offense that leads the country in passing yards per game (411.5) after two weeks of the season. - Big 12 Football

  09/10/22 - QB Donovan SmithrSr/2025, Houston, 6-4, 235 (DS#32 QB) + More +

Donovan Smith ran 9 yards for a touchdown in the second overtime, lifting Texas Tech to a 33-30 victory over No. 25 Houston on Saturday. A back-and-forth finish ended with the Red Raiders (2-0) beating a ranked nonconference opponent in the regular season for the first time since 1989, a span of 14 games. After Houston's Bubba Baxa opened the second OT with a 20-yard field goal, Smith broke into the open field and ran untouched to the end zone, sending Texas Tech students and fans streaming onto the field. Baxa kicked a go-ahead 35-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining in regulation after Gervarrius Owens returned Smith's second interception to the Texas Tech 21 in the final two minutes. Smith answered by leading the Red Raiders to a tying 47-yarder from Trey Wolff with three seconds to go, keyed by Smith's 27-yard scramble. Wolff replaced Gino Garcia, who missed from 45 earlier in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars (1-1) erased a 17-3 halftime deficit, getting even early in the fourth quarter when Art Green stepped in front of a pass from Smith and returned it 54 yards for a TD. Still, Houston's 12-game regular-season winning streak ended. Houston also trailed by two touchdowns in the second half of another overtime game in last week's opener, rallying from 21-7 down entering the fourth quarter for a 37-35 double-overtime victory over UTSA. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime after backing themselves up. Smith converted on fourth-and-20 with a 21-yard completion to Jerand Bradley. The Red Raiders forced the second OT on Tahj Brooks' 4-yard scoring run. Tune faced second-and-21 to open overtime before a 19-yard completion to Nathaniel Dell. Three plays later, he threw a 15-yard TD pass to Matthew Golden. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

  12/28/22 - QB Donovan SmithrSr/2025, Houston, 6-4, 235 (DS#32 QB) + More +

Donovan Smith threw for 252 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score, and Texas Tech beat Mississippi State 34-7 in the Liberty Bowl on Tuesday night. Tahj Brooks rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown and SaRodorick Thompson ran for 80 yards and a score for the Red Raiders (7-6), who finished with a winning record for the first time since 2015. They were appearing in their first bowl game since 2017. Mississippi State (7-6) fell short in coach Mike Leach's first game against a former program of his. Leach, who went 84-43 at Texas Tech from 2000-09, failed to become the first Bulldogs coach to end each of his first two seasons with a bowl victory. Mississippi State was playing in its 12th straight bowl game. Red Raiders interim coach Sonny Cumbie, a former player at Texas Tech under Leach, ended his five-game run with a 2/3 record. Cumbie, who is departing to become Louisiana Tech's coach, took over for Matt Wells in October.

Leach's prolific offense never could get rolling against the Red Raiders and the resulting lopsided loss dropped the Southeastern Conference to 0-4 in the postseason. The Bulldogs were held scoreless in the second half and finished with 344 yards, 105 below their average. Mississippi State was without three offensive linemen, including All-SEC left tackle Charles Cross, a projected top 10 pick in the NFL draft. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

  11/15/21 - QB Donovan SmithrSr/2025, Houston, 6-4, 235 (DS#32 QB) + More +

NOV 15 BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Donovan Smith, TTU, QB, Fr.,...In his first career start, Smith completed 25-of-32 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns in Tech's win over ISU. He became just the seventh freshman in the Big 12 era to start at quarterback for the Red Raiders. Of those seven freshmen, Smith was the fifth to make his first career start against a Big 12 foe as the Red Raiders are now 4-1 in those games. His performance marked the second-most passing yards by a Red Raider freshman making his starting debut during the Big 12 era as he trailed only Davis Webb's 415 yards and three touchdowns from the 2013 victory over Iowa State. In addition to his success in the passing game, Smith rushed for 50 yards to give him 372 yards of total offense on the day. - Big 12 Football
