  12/02/22 - RB Jeff SimsrSr/2025, Arizona State, 6-3, 215 (DS#46 RB) + More +

Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in transfer portal or planning to join as of Dec. 1 is Georgia Tech's Jeff Sims: Sims was one of the nation's top 20 quarterbacks in the 2020 recruiting class in the On3 Consensus rankings, but has been inconsistent with the Yellow Jackets. He started 10 games as a true freshman on a bad team during the COVID season, and may not truly have been ready to start. Sims started six games in 2021 and the first seven this season before being sidelined by an injury. He is seventh in school history in both passing yards and total offense. Sims has good size (6-4, 219) and is a definite running threat. He suffered at Tech because of the lack of surrounding talent and a lack of cohesion in the offense. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

Georgia Tech has lost two quarterbacks for the rest of the season with former starter Jeff Sims nursing a foot injury and No. 1 backup Zach Pyron out with a broken collarbone, interim coach Brent Key said Tuesday. Sims, the team's starter since 2020, will spend the rest of the season in treatment and will not be a part of team activities, Key said. Sims dressed the last three weeks and was listed as available on an emergency basis but he didn't take a snap when Pyron was injured and had to leave last week's 35-14 home loss to Miami in the fourth quarter.

Sims initially injured his foot in a loss Oct. 20 to Virginia. "He's frustrated he has an injury that's preventing him from being full speed and allowing him to be part of the team," Key said. "Just because on paper you medically can (play), every day you wake and feel a little bit different. The ability for him to go out and be the person he wants to be on the field didn't present itself at the time." Zach Gibson, a transfer from Akron, will start when Georgia Tech (4-6, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) visits No. 13 North Carolina (9-1, 6-0) on Saturday. Taisun Phommachanh, a transfer from Clemson, will serve as the primary backup. Phommachanh, who played in 13 games over three seasons as a backup with Clemson, has not taken a snap this year. Pyron will have surgery on Thursday. - AP College Football

Quarterback Jeff Sims ran for 95 yards and threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with an injury on the first play of overtime and Georgia Tech held on for a 23-20 victory over Duke on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won two straight for the first time since they beat Miami and Virginia in November 2018. A 26-21 win last week at then-No. 24 Pittsburgh snapped a nine-game losing streak against FBS opponents. A week after stopping a 13-game ACC losing streak, Duke (4-2, 1-1) floundered most of the game until Sahmir Hagans' 81-yard punt return for a touchdown down the right sideline pulled the Blue Devils within 20-13 with 5:55 remaining.

The Jackets lost leading receiver Nate McCollum, who had eight catches for 101 yards, to an injury with 5:45 left in the game. They quickly punted, and Hagans ran the ball back 50 yards to the Georgia Tech 44. But a fourth down from the 39 resulted in LaMiles Brooks' pass breakup on a drag route. Georgia Tech's defense had to make one last stand in regulation but couldn't overcome three 15-yard penalties that advanced Duke to the 2, before tight end Nicky Dalmolin hauled in a TD catch to send the game to overtime. The Jackets took a 23-20 lead in overtime on Gavin Stewart's 37-yard field goal. On Duke's lone possession of overtime, an offensive pass interference call against the Devils pushed the ball back to the 34 and Charlie Ham was short on a 52-yard kick to end it. Georgia Tech outgained Duke 407 yards to 272 in total offense in regulation. The Blue Devils entered averaging 35 points per game, fifth-best in the ACC. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

Jeff Sims passed for a touchdown and ran for another, Hassan Hall piled up 157 yards rushing and Georgia Tech made interim head coach Brent Key a winner in his debut, stunning No. 24 Pittsburgh 26-21 on Saturday night. Five days after Key was promoted to replace Geoff Collins - fired four games into his fourth season with the Yellow Jackets - Georgia Tech took advantage of some sloppy play by the defending ACC champions to beat an FBS opponent for the first time in nearly a year. Linebacker Charlie Thomas recovered a fumble and picked off Pitt quarterback Kedon Slovis to set up two of Gavin Edwards' five field goals as the inspired Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-1 ACC) converted three Pitt turnovers into 13 points, including a 21-yard touchdown pass from Sims to E.J. Jenkins with 10:30 to play that gave Georgia Tech a 19-7 lead. The Panthers (3-2, 0-1) drew within five on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Slovis to Jaden Bradley with 1:57 to go but Hall raced 63 yards on the first play of Georgia Tech's ensuring possession and Sims darted in from 18 yards out with 1:25 remaining to seal it.

The victory snapped a nine-game losing streak to FBS opponents by the Yellow Jackets, the last five by a combined score of 210-20, including a 27-10 setback to UCF last weekend that ultimately cost Collins and athletic director Todd Stansbury their jobs. Tasked with trying to make something of his alma mater's season, Key promised the Yellow Jackets would “play the best brand of football we possibly can.” At soggy and cold Acrisure Statdium, that meant relying heavily on a defense that never let Slovis or the Panthers get comfortable until they were too far behind. The USC transfer completed a deceiving 26 of 45 passes for 305 yards with three touchdowns - two in the final 2 minutes - and an interception as Pitt's offense sputtered in the second half without junior running back Israel Abanikanda. The ACC's leading rusher exited late in the first half with an undisclosed injury and his replacement, Vincent Davis, fumbled twice in Pitt territory to set up Georgia Tech scores. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

Geoff Collins is out as Georgia Tech's football coach, fired Monday in the midst of his fourth season after failing to make headway with a brash plan to turn the Yellow Jackets into a national powerhouse through branding and promoting Atlanta's big-city culture. Collins was officially dumped during a meeting of the athletic association board two days after a 27-10 loss to Central Florida left him with a record of 10-28 at Georgia Tech. Brent Key, the assistant head coach under Collins, was appointed interim head coach. He doesn't have much time to settle in: The Yellow Jackets are at No. 24 Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Collins, whose team is 1-3 this season, finished with a winning percentage of just .263 - the lowest of 13 full-time coaches in the school's history. Bill Lewis had been the only Yellow Jackets coach to lose his job during a season. He resigned after a 1-7 start in 1994 when it became clear he would be fired. Collins was the third Football Bowl Subdivision coach to be let go in the opening month of this season, following Scott Frost at Nebraska and Herm Edwards at Arizona State. Georgia Tech also dismissed athletic director Todd Stansbury, who hired Collins and provided steadfast support even as the losses mounted. Frank Neville, chief of staff to university President Ángel Cabrera, will take over as interim AD while the school begins a search this week to fill both positions. Collins is due a buyout of at least $10.5 million, the full amount remaining on the final three years of the seven-year contract that brought him to Georgia Tech from Temple ahead of the 2019 season. - AP College Football

It was clear from his first snap that Georgia Tech's Jeff Sims was no ordinary freshman. The big man with quick feet was too slippery for the Seminoles. Sims delivered sizzling passes with a flick of his right wrist. He seemed unfazed by making his college debut at Florida State. The Yellow Jackets won as two-touchdown underdogs that day in September 2020 largely because Sims made plays where none seemed available. The Jackets had a quarterback who could make their painful transition from the triple-option not last too long. Sims has shown flashes of the same magic since then: big plays, big moments, big victories. Consistency is what's been missing. Maybe it wouldn't be if not for injuries. Sims hurt his shoulder in the opener last season, sat out two games and then returned to play a month of good football before going back on the injury list.

Sims still is the player who can elevate Tech's offense. A great season for him would mean Tech finally breaks through after being stuck on three wins for three consecutive seasons. Sims has played 18 games for Tech. It just seems longer because he made such a strong first impression. Now is the time for Sims' talent, experience and maturity to coalesce. "My mindset has definitely changed," Sims said Saturday at Tech's media day. "I'm an older guy now. I'm not worried about a lot of things I used to worry about. I'm not worried about outside noise and things like that. On the physical side, I've been putting in a lot of work, too." There's a lot of work to do. Tech is replacing pretty much every offensive starter from 2021, including star running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Lots of new players in the lineup isn't necessarily a bad thing for the Jackets. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Quarterback Jeff Sims can continue to improve his accuracy and decision-making, and having a quarterbacks coach in Chris Weinke who doesn't have coordinating duties should help. But, as a two-year returning starter, Sims' spot in the lineup appears secure. That said, having a backup who can challenge him and be a productive contributor if needed is a priority. Sims started all 10 games as a freshman in 2020, but missed five last season because of injury. Tech may need to call on one of Sims' backups as it did Jordan Yates (now at Sam Houston State) a year ago.

Sims is the only returning quarterback from last season's team, with Zach Pyron coming in as a freshman and Zach Gibson (Akron) and Taisun Phommachanh (Clemson) arriving as transfers. Both Pyron and Gibson took part in spring practice, and Phommachanh arrived over the summer. If a backup is needed, it's possible that Weinke and new offensive coordinator Chip Long could make the decision based on the situation. Phommachanh, for instance, is a bigger threat with his legs than Pyron and Gibson. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Adonicas Sanders caught a 36-yard touchdown throw from Jeff Sims with 51 seconds left to help Georgia Tech rally past Duke 31-27 on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) got the ball with 1:42 left and no timeouts at their own 12-yard line. But Sims targeted Sanders for the two big plays on the go-ahead drive, first when he beat Jeremiah Lewis deep down the right side for a 37-yard gain. Then came Sanders catch at the goalline, securing the deep ball despite Lewis committing a pass-interference penalty in a desperate attempt to break up the pass. Those were Sanders’ only catches of the game.

Duke (3-3, 0-2) had one more drive to respond and crossed midfield, but Juanyeh Thomas intercepted an overthrown ball from Gunnar Holmberg over the middle with 15 seconds left to seal this one. Sims threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions for Georgia Tech, which scored the game’s first 14 points but found itself in a tight finish to the final seconds. One of those three scoring throws was a 77-yard pass to Jahmyr Gibbs - who was left completely uncovered coming out of the backfield for an easy catch-and-run on the left side on the Yellow Jackets’ first possession. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

Jeff Sims came off the bench to run for three touchdowns and pass for another, Georgia Tech's defense stifled Sam Howell much of the game and the Yellow Jackets beat a ranked team for the first time in Geoff Collins' three seasons as coach, upsetting No. 21 North Carolina 45-22 Saturday night. Playing for the first time since he was injured in a season-opening loss to Northern Illinois, Sims replaced Jordan Yates late in the second quarter and ran for TDs of 11 and 1 yards that put Georgia Tech in control - the latter set up by his 38-yard scamper.

Sims threw a 27-yard scoring pass to Malachi Carter early in the fourth quarter and finished off the game with a flourish, scoring on a 50-yard run with just over a minute remaining. Sims ran for 128 yards on 10 carries and completed 10 of 13 passes for 112 yards for Georgia Tech (2-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). North Carolina (2-2, 1-2) is shaping up as one of the nation's most disappointing teams after coming into the season ranked in the top 10. Sam Howell was sacked eight times and fumbled twice, leading to 10 points for the the Yellow Jackets in the first half. He also was stuffed on a fourth-down run in his own territory, setting up a short field for another Georgia Tech touchdown drive. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

A stunning season-opening loss to Northern Illinois has third-year Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins forced to defend the state of his rebuilding process. The health of quarterback Jeff Sims could be a key to Collins' hopes of showing progress in 2021. Collins is 6-16 in his third season in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets, who play FCS state rival Kennesaw State on Saturday, have lost six of seven since a 2-2 start to the 2020 season. The latest loss was especially damaging to hopes the 2021 season could provide signs Collins can build a winning team.

Among low points in Collins' three seasons, perhaps only a loss to The Citadel in his 2019 debut season compares with last Saturday's 22-21 loss to Northern Illinois. Georgia Tech was favored by 18 1/2 points. The visit from Kennesaw State was expected to generate momentum for Georgia Tech's Atlantic Coast Conference opener at No. 6 Clemson on Sept. 18. Now, with new questions at quarterback, no one dares to look past Kennesaw State, which will be playing its first game against a Power 5 opponent. Sims' status against Kennesaw State is uncertain after he left the loss to Northern Illinois with an apparent left arm injury. Sims, a right-handed thrower, had his hand on his left elbow as he left the field. He had his left arm in a sling as he stood on the sideline for the second half. - AP College Football

As he enters the season as the expected starter for the second year in a row, Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims said that he can feel a difference from his freshman season when he gets on the field. "I definitely feel the speed of it slowing down," Sims said Monday following the Yellow Jackets' third practice of the preseason. "It's really just processing it faster than slowing it down. But I definitely feel more comfortable out there."

Sims' comments followed remarks he made at the ACC Kickoff media event in Charlotte, N.C., in July, when he spoke of his growing confidence and his ability to manipulate defenses when players competed in seven-on-seven workouts. Coach Geoff Collins has remarked a number of times how much time Sims had spent watching game video to help deepen his understanding of the Tech offense. In 10 starts last season, Sims completed 54.9% of his passes and averaged 188.1 passing yards per game with 13 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. "I definitely approach the game in a different way," Sims said Monday. "I feel like it's a great thing for me, just taking it one day at a time and getting better each day, stacking days. Just going out there knowing that I've just got to go through my reads and just slow the game down in my head and stay calm." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

With 2020 leading receiver Jalen Camp in training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Jackets' receiver corps will have to find trustworthy options for quarterback Jeff Sims. With so many starters returning, the task of finding a successor for Camp could be one of the primary missions of the preseason. Malachi Carter (20 catches in 2020) and Adonicas Sanders (17 catches) are the two most experienced returnees, and transfer slot receiver Kyric McGowan (Northwestern) looks like a strong candidate for playing time and a large role in the offense. After that, talented younger receivers such as PeJe Harris and Marquez Ezzard, among many others, will push for opportunities. It could also be a breakout year for the tight-end group, led by Dylan Deveney and Dylan Leonard. "I kind of felt bad last year because they didn't get as much love, but our tight ends are definitely going to be involved in the offense this year," Sims said. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

It was just the first day of spring practice, but Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins nevertheless liked what he saw from quarterback Jeff Sims in Tuesday's practice. While players were not in pads, Sims earned Collins' approval in running the Yellow Jackets offense. "All of the things that a true freshman quarterback (Sims) had to do last year, just his comfort level and his confidence in being able to direct the offense - to move it, knowing where to go with the football, knowing where to go with the run game - just tremendous improvements in that area as well," Collins said.

As a freshman who started every game last season, Sims had highs and lows, showing a playmaking flair with both his arm and feet (13 passing touchdowns, six rushing touchdowns, 25 runs of 10-plus yards) but also throwing 13 interceptions in 257 attempts. Sims has shown a commitment to improving with the aid of offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude, according to Collins. "One of my favorite things about Jeff is he's so humble," Collins said. "(He) has a tremendous amount of desire to get better in every single phase, and he goes through game after game with coach Patenaude." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Jeff Sims threw three touchdown passes and ran for 108 yards, setting career highs, and Georgia Tech beat turnover-plagued Duke 56-33 on Saturday night as each team returned from long layoffs. Georgia Tech (3-5, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) ended a three-game losing streak. Freshman Jahmyr Gibbs had touchdown runs of 61 and 26 yards in the first half before leaving with an apparent hamstring injury. Thanks to Sims and Jordan Mason, who ran for 105 yards, Georgia Tech had 377 yards rushing even with Gibbs missing the second half. Chase Brice threw two scoring passes for Duke (2-7, 1-7), but the Blue Devils had five turnovers, including four lost fumbles. Duke committed turnovers on its first three possessions of the second half.

Georgia Tech led 28-26 at halftime before Sims threw 24-yard scoring passes to Jalen Camp and Adonicas Sanders in the third quarter. Sims had a 12-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Carter in the first quarter. Each team was returning from long layoffs caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Duke was playing for the first time since a 56-24 loss to North Carolina on Nov. 7. Georgia Tech had not played since a 31-13 loss to No. 2 Notre Dame on Oct. 31. Georgia Tech dominated the first quarter but freshman Nate McCollum fumbled while backing up near the Yellow Jackets 5 to field a punt, and Shaka Heyward recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

Georgia Tech's offense is making big strides in its second year under coordinator Dave Patenaude. The Yellow Jackets, coming off a 46-27 win over Louisville, have gone over 400 yards of total offense in the first four games, when playing all FBS opponents, for the first time since 1999. Tech is averaging 453 yards per game, but has been slowed by 12 turnovers, though it had none against Louisville after committing five in each of the previous two games.   Jeff Sims threw a go-ahead 19-yard scoring pass to Jahmyr Gibbs midway through the fourth quarter and Georgia Tech rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to beat Louisville 46-27 on Friday night. Louisville running backs lost three fumbles while Georgia Tech did not commit a turnover. Javian Hawkins ran for 155 yards for the Cardinals but his fumble in the fourth quarter was costly. Jordan Domineck's recovery near midfield set up Sims' scoring pass to Gibbs, who vaulted defensive back Isaiah Hayes at the goal line to give the Yellow Jackets a 32-27 lead.

Georgia Tech (2-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak. Sims, a freshman, passed for 249 yards with two touchdowns, including a 34-yard scoring pass to Malachi Carter to extend the lead with less than three minutes remaining. Dontae Smith added a 12-yard scoring run in the final minute. Louisville (1-3, 0-3) suffered its third straight loss despite a strong effort by quarterback Malik Cunningham, who passed for 229 yards with two touchdowns and ran for two scores. - AP College Football

In the midst of the debate about how college athletes should be compensated for use of their name, image and likeness, Baratunde Cola has a distinctly qualified voice to speak into the matter. One, the Georgia Tech mechanical-engineering professor is the institute's faculty athletics representative, charged with providing oversight to the athletic department and looking out for the well-being of its athletes. Two, he is a former college football player, having played fullback for Vanderbilt. Three, as it pertains to his proposal, he has significant experience with establishing a business and also a non-profit organization. "I'm always thinking about the student-athlete and ways that change can be enabling to the mission, and that's where I came from with this," Cola told the AJC.

His idea for the NCAA as it considers how athletes can be compensated for their name, image and likeness (NIL) is this: Athletes can create non-profit organizations that endorsement money goes into, and then they can pay themselves a portion of revenue and use the remaining funds for charity or to enhance their educations. "The message I'm trying to get across is this is something that I think the student-athletes will love," Cola said. "Frankly, I think it's something they will embrace if it's articulated to them well." A quick background on NIL: In April, the NCAA voted to support changes for athletes to be compensated by third parties (i.e., not the schools themselves) for endorsements, appearances, camps and other like opportunities. Expected to go into effect at the start of the 2021-22 academic year, it followed decades of such benefits being impermissible by NCAA rule. - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

True freshman Jeff Sims, who was once a Florida State commitment, threw for 277 yards and a touchdown as Georgia Tech defeated the Seminoles 16-13 in both teams' season opener on Saturday night. Sims completed 24 of 35 passes and had two costly interceptions but the Jacksonville, Florida, native also ran for 64 yards and helped guide Georgia Tech to the season-opening win. Jordan Mason also ran 14 times for 55 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown run.

The Seminoles used defense and special teams to stay in the game. Cornerback Asante Samuel had two interceptions and two pass break-ups for Florida State. Marvin Wilson blocked a pair of field-goal attempts, while Janarius Robinson blocked an extra-point attempt. James Blackman completed 23 of 43 passes for 198 yards but he was largely ineffective after the Seminoles scored a touchdown and a field goal on their first two drives. Blackman connected with Keyshawn Helton for a 3-yard touchdown on Florida State's opening drive. - AP College/Georgia Tech Football
