R.J. Moten, Florida, Player News
|
R.J. Moten went from an afterthought as a true freshman to definite rotation player, if not starter, in a matter of months. He impressed the staff so much last spring and fall, he earned his first career start in the Wolverines' season opener last Septem ber against Western Michigan. It was his first of five starts at safety, backing up Hill, who took on an all-econmpassing, rover-type role that called for him lining up every which way. With Hill often tasked with defending an opponent's top receiver, it allowed Moten to get his feet wet and learn how to play at a high level on a weekly basis.Listed at 6 feet and 221 pounds, Moten doesn't come across as intimidating - but he has knack for finding the football and making plays. In 14 starts last s eason, the Delran, N.J., native racked up 34 tackles (27 of them solo), contributed an interception and had four pass breakups. "Last year, I was a little down there (on the totem pole)," Moten acknowledged this spring. "But this year, without them, it's my turn to step up and be that Dax or Brad that they were last year." Moten and Rod Moore, who played as a true freshman last year, are the frontrunners to start at safety for Michigan this fall. And while their experience level might not be that of the ir predecessors, the coaching staff liked what the saw last season. - Ann Arbor News
