Nate Jones, a dynamic running back who did not practice during the University of New Mexico's spring football drills, has entered the transfer portal, he announced on Twitter Friday night. Jones, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound freshman, was second on the team la st season with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries. Gonzales never specified why Jones was absent for the spring. Jones also would not comment on the reason. Gonzales only would say on Saturday that Jones did not meet "our expectations," j ust as he said in March. Jones showed explosiveness and great potential when he ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in a 39-33 loss at Hawaii on Nov. 7, which was his debut. He had sat out the week prior because he had been in close contact wi th a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 and was near the end of a 14-day quarantine. - Albuquerque Journal

There's a young face, rather a talented running back, missing from University of New Mexico spring football thus far. Nate Jones, an explosive runner who was second on the team last season with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries, is out a t this time. UNM coach Danny Gonzales would not comment specifically on the reason for Jones being away from practices. "If you don't take care of yourself on and off the field, it doesn't matter; if you don't meet our expectations, you're not out here," Gonzales said after Wednesday's practice. "So, right now that's where he's at: he's not meeting our expectations." Jones, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound four-star recruit rated by ESPN, had a remarkable debut on Nov. 7 when he ran for 96 yards and a touchdown o n 13 carries in a 39-33 loss at Hawaii. He had sat out the week prior because he had been in close contact with a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 and was near the end of a 14-day quarantine. - Albuquerque Journal
