  08/31/24 - QB Hudson CardrSr/2025, Purdue, 6-2, 210 (DS#21 QB) + More +

Hudson Card connected on 24 of 25 passes, including his final 17 in a row, for 273 yards and four touchdowns in leading Purdue to a 49-0 romp over Indiana State in Saturday's season opener for both teams. Card threw for 168 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Boilermakers to a 21-0 halftime lead. Card threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Max Klare in the first quarter and a pair of 8-yard TD passes to Jaron Tibbs and De'Nylon Morrissette in the second quarter.

Purdue expanded the lead with a pair of TDs in the third quarter, a 6-yard run by Reggie Love III and a 31-yard pass from Card to Leland Smith. The Boilermakers expanded the lead to 42-0 on Elijah Jackson's 69-yard touchdown run in the first five minutes of the fourth. A blocked punt led to Purdue's final score, a 4-yard TD run by Jaheim Merriweather. Devin Mockobee was the Boilermakers' leading rusher with 89 yards on 11 carries. The closest Indiana State came to scoring was a 45-yard missed field goal at the end of the first half. - AP College Football

Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in, or planning to be to enter the transfer portal as of Dec. 1 is Texas' Hudson Card: Card started early in 2021 season as a redshirt freshman, then lost his job to Casey Thompson. Quinn Ewers beat him out this season, but Card did start three games when Ewers was injured. Card has the ability to be a starter – though not a star – at the Power 5 level. He has some running ability that didn't come to the fore at Texas. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

Texas' No. 18 ranking in the first USA Today coaches poll wasn't a surprise but the first-place vote definitely raised eyebrows. "It wasn't me," said Steve Sarkisian, who doesn't have a vote. Sarkisian is more motivated by the fourth-place vote in the Big 12 media poll. "We've got a lot of work to do," he said. He reiterated that after a less-than perfect full practice Tuesday, when the passing game seems a bit out of sync. Why? It's not solely up to quarterbacks Hudson Card, Quinn Ewers and Maalik Murphy. And it's not totally dependent on receivers Xavier Worthy, Isaiah Neyor, Agiye Hall and Jordan Whittington. "I think it's in concert together," Sarkisian said. "One is you have to recognize (defensive) coverage. We really push and strive our guys to get them to understand football, know whether it's man coverage or zone coverage. Is it two-deep coverage? So, If the receivers recognize and understand the defense and the quarterbacks react in kind, Sarkisian's offense will produce. - Austin American Statesman

  04/21/22 - QB Hudson CardrSr/2025, Purdue, 6-2, 210 (DS#21 QB) + More +

Texas quarterback Hudson Card hopes he's the Longhorns' once and future starter. He beat out Casey Thompson last August but ceded the job in September. Now he's battling Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers for the starting spot. You can count Hudson Card among those who have liked what they've seen from Quinn Ewers. It should be noted that Card isn't a fan or member of the media. He is a third-year quarterback who isn't about to sell himself short. Both Card and Ewers, a touted transfer from Ohio State, are competing to be the Longhorns' starter. "He can make all the throws, and I believe I can too," Card told reporters last week.

This is the second straight offseason in which Card has competed to be Texas' starting quarterback. As a redshirt freshman, he beat out Casey Thompson last August and started the season opener. But he was unable to hold onto the job. Thompson struggled at times as well. In the end, Thompson started 10 games. Card was a two-time starter who also received significant playing time at Iowa State and West Virginia. The Longhorns went 5-7. Toward the end of the season, head coach Steve Sarkisian said, "We have to open that (starting quarterback) job up...We're going to tear this thing all the way down, and we're going to start back at square one come winter conditioning and then into spring ball." - Austin American Statesman

  09/01/21 - QB Hudson CardrSr/2025, Purdue, 6-2, 210 (DS#21 QB) + More +

As was reported over the weekend, redshirt freshman Hudson Card was announced as the starter for Satuday's season opener. Junior Casey Thompson will play. And then the Horns will look at what both did in the game. Why Card? "Hudson's a very talented young man, he's got a great work ethic and he really tries to operate the way we want to operate in," Sarkisian said. "Just as I told Hudson and Casey, it's really not a knock on Casey. ... It was a tough call, but I think in general, you try to make the best decision for the program at that time. "Again, Casey's going to play in this game. We'll reevaluate after one game. Neither guy's ever started a game in their career, so we'll look at it after one week." Sarkisian isn't too dynamic up there on the podium. But that's OK. As long as what he's saying up there is honest and insightful, a truthful quote is better than a great headline.

Example: Sark, who has plenty of experience molding, coaching and calling plays for successful quarterbacks, explained the thinking behind his decision. "The quarterback position is the most important position in sports - I always say that and I believe that. But also, it's one position of 22 starters on our team on offense and defense," he said. "Everybody has a role in our organization, and ultimately on game day, you have a responsibility to do your job, and the quarterback is no different. And what we ask of him to do ultimately is going to be things that we believe are putting him in the best position to have success, whoever that guy is on the field, and then they've got a responsibility to do their job. And generally speaking, the one that does his job the most consistently gives us the best chance to have success. I think both guys understand that." - Austin American Statesman

The decision appears to be in. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian will name Hudson Card as the starting quarterback for the season opener against No. 23 Louisiana on Sept. 4. Horns247 first reported the decision on Saturday. A UT spokesman could not confirm, and Sarkisian could not be reached. Sarkisian is rolling the dice, to be sure. It will be the redshirt freshman's first start and Card's first real game experience. Card would be replacing four-year starter Sam Ehlinger, who threw for 11,436 yards and 94 touchdowns. Ehlinger is now battling for the backup job with the Indianapolis Colts.

So what does this decision mean for junior Casey Thompson? It was thought the veteran who threw four touchdown passes in last season's Alamo Bowl would win the starting job. Thompson carried himself like the starter throughout the offseason, holding extra film sessions with receivers as they learned a new offense. Thompson has completed 20 of 29 passes for 309 yards and six touchdowns in seven career games with the Longhorns. Typically, if a veteran quarterback can't beat out a younger player, coaches lean toward the younger player. Sarkisian has stressed throughout August that both players have performed well, both going through various ups and downs. - Austin American Statesman
