Zavier Betts, Nebraska, Player News

Nebraska is in talks with former standout receiver Zavier Betts about a return to the football team. The possibility of an NU comeback - perhaps even likelihood - was confirmed by two sources with knowledge of the situation. Momentum picked up considerab ly since Betts entered the transfer portal Jan. 3, when a source said the Bellevue West graduate was not on NU's radar at that time. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Betts sat out the 2022 season after leaving the Huskers in March. That after flashing elite speed and playmaking ability during his two-year stint in Lincoln that spanned 18 games, 32 catches and 417 receiving yards. He was NU's second-leading receiver in 2021 with 20 grabs for 286 yards while adding three carries for 109 yards and a touchdown . Betts' sudden departure from NU was not related to discipline for any on-field or off-field issues, sources said in the spring, but more because of football burnout. Then-coach Scott Frost declined to get into specifics, repeatedly saying Betts is was not a member of the team at the time. - Lincoln Journal Star

Zavier Betts certainly made quite a splash in a win against Penn State when he took a fly sweep 45 yards for a touchdown. The freshman wide receiver from Bellevue West, though, has something else working for him through limited action in three games this fall: When the ball gets thrown his way, it turns into positive yards. The numbers are still small, but Betts has been targeted five times so far in his career and he has five catches for 80 yards. The yardage is good for third on the team, trailing onl y sophomore receiver Wan'Dale Robinson and junior tight end Austin Allen, both of whom have been targeted far more frequently. Betts is a big target, literally, at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, and he's given the quarterbacks safe, easy throws underneath so f ar, besides his star turn against PSU. - Lincoln Journal Star
