 Jalen Berger, Transfer, Player News

  09/10/22 - RB Jalen BergerrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-0, 215 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Jalen Berger ran for 107 yards and three touchdowns and Michigan State's defense forced four fumbles Saturday to help the 14th ranked Spartans to a 52-0 victory over Akron. It was the largest margin of victory for Michigan State (2-0) since beating Eastern Michigan by 59 points in 2014. "Our focus was better, our intensity throughout was better," Michigan State coach Mel Tucker said. "There was a lot of good things for us to build upon with our team in all three phases. And we have some things to clean up if we expect to go on the road and get anything done." Kendell Brooks, filling in for injured starting safety Xavier Henderson, forced the ball out twice in the first quarter.

He has forced three fumbles in the Spartans' first two games. "KB, he's getting better," Tucker said. "We have confidence in him to go in the game and get the job done and make plays and be physical and knock the ball off people. I think as he gains more experience he's going to continue to get better. That's good when guys can go in, execute and make plays." On Akron's opening drive, the senior safety knocked the ball loose from tight end TJ Banks and linebacker Cal Haladay picked up the ball and ran 22 yards to the Michigan State 41. Six plays later, Jarek Broussard scored on a 1-yard run. Haladay later forced a fumble in the second half when he sacked backup quarterback Jeff Undercuffler. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Mel Tucker has his Michigan State football team trending upward. The Spartans went 11-2 and won the Peach Bowl over Pittsburgh last season after going 2-5 in Tucker's debut season. Tucker and his coaching staff will be asking a former University of Wisconsin running back to be a key contributor on offense this season as they try to replace Kenneth Walker III, last season's Doak Walker Award and Big Ten running back of the year winner.

Jalen Berger, a four-star recruit in the Badgers' 2020 class, transferred to Michigan State after he was dismissed from UW's team in October. He's competing with another transfer, Jarek Broussard, for the Spartans' starting role. "He's a very talented young man," Tucker said about Berger. "He really bought in right away to our culture and what we're about. He's really started to bond with teammates, he's really opened up. "I'm glad we got him." Tucker said one of Berger's best traits is his versatility, capable of being a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Berger was UW's leading rusher during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but he then fell on the depth chart entering the 2021 season. - Wisconsin State Journal

Poised for a 2022 standout season: RB Jalen Berger, junior. The Wisconsin transfer had to like what he saw when Kenneth Walker III went from Wake Forest to Michigan State and became a star. Berger had 389 yards rushing and three touchdowns in two seasons with the Badgers. - AP College Football

  10/11/21 - RB Jalen BergerrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-0, 215 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Wisconsin has dismissed running back Jalen Berger from its football program one year after he led the team in rushing. Badgers coach Paul Chryst announced the move in a statement Sunday without specifying a reason for the dismissal. Berger didn't play Saturday in Wisconsin's 24-0 victory at Illinois. Berger, who is from Newark, New Jersey, rushed for a team-high 301 yards as a freshman last season despite missing three of Wisconsin's seven games due to injury. But his playing time had been sporadic this year as he slipped down the depth chart. He didn't play in a season-opening 16-10 loss to Penn State while Clemson transfer Chez Mellusi and Isaac Guerendo got the bulk of the carries. Chryst said two days later that Berger had a “good approach,” adding, “just because he didn't play doesn't mean he's doing something wrong.” Berger followed up the Penn State game by rushing 15 times for 62 yards and a touchdown in a 34-7 victory over Eastern Michigan, but he totaled nine carries in Wisconsin's three games since. He had one carry for 8 yards in a 41-13 loss to No. 14 Notre Dame and had eight rushing attempts for 18 yards in a 38-17 loss to No. 8 Michigan. Wisconsin ran 61 times for 391 yards without Berger in the backfield Saturday, as Mellusi gained 145 yards on 21 carries and freshman Braelon Allen rushed for 131 yards on 18 attempts. - AP College Football
