Petras, in his third sea son as Iowa's starter, was replaced by Alex Padilla in the second half of last Saturday's 54-10 loss at Ohio State. The two were listed as co-No. 1s on this week's depth chart, but Petras got the start. Stevens had field goals of 29 and 24 yards in the first half, then added a 54-yarder in the third quarter. His 25-yarder in the fourth quarter made it 26-7. The first major preseason top-25 college football poll was released Monday. And Iowa found itself on the outside looking in. Despite finishing inside the top 25 in the final rankings of 2021 for the fourth straight year (the longest such streak under coa ch Kirk Ferentz), the Hawkeyes were unranked in the first USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll of the 2022 season. However, they received the most votes of teams not in the top 25. Within the Big Ten, Iowa was picked to finish second in the Big Ten West be hind Wisconsin (which checked in at No. 20) during Big Ten media days. The Hawkeyes return an impressive collection of talent on defense but questions about their offense and special teams unit loom entering fall. Outside of Iowa, four Big Ten teams made the initial poll: Ohio State (No. 3), Michigan (No. 6), Michigan State (No. 14) and Wisconsin. Of the ranked teams, Iowa will play all but Michigan State this season. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras took some Iowa fans by surprise Tuesday night. A video showed Petras launching a pass with ease for roughly 70 or 75 yards while he was at the Manning Passing Academy. "My goodness," one fan tweeted as it circulated around social media. By Thursday evening, it had almost 72,000 views on Twitter. But the person who recorded the video wasn't surprised. "The biggest thing that people don't realize, I think, in Iowa is how well he throws the football and how strong his arm is ," said Tony Racioppi, who was on the staff at the Manning camp.Racioppi also has been Petras' private quarterback coach, working with him on many of the tweaks that could make a big difference for the Hawkeyes' offense. Not unlike other Power Fiv e quarterbacks, there were some adjustments needed to his mechanics when Petras visited Racioppi shortly after the 2021 season. Offseason priorities in 2022 have included "cleaning up his throwing sequence," adjusting his footwork, staying balanced and m aneuvering around the pocket. "When my fundamentals are correct, I don't miss," Petras said in the spring. - The Gazette

Spencer Petras will be the starting quarterback when No. 15 Iowa plays second-ranked Michigan in the Big Ten championship game on Saturday night. Petras was listed first on the depth chart released at the start of the week, and coach Kirk Ferentz made it official Tuesday. Petras started every game last year and the first nine games this season. He missed two full games with an injured right (throwing) shoulder before replacing Alex Padilla after halftime of last week's 28-21 win at Nebraska. "The way I see it, I got hurt, Alex stepped in and did a really good job," Petras said. "I just think at this time of year, it's not as much of a competition. That takes place in fall camp. It's more who can help the team win the best that week. When I was hurt, th at was certainly Alex. It seems right now that it's me." Ferentz said it was a "gut feeling" that prompted him to put Petras in the game with Iowa trailing the Cornhuskers 14-6 at half last Friday. "I thought he did a good job," Ferentz said. "And he's d one a lot of good things over two years. We haven't forgotten about that at all." Petras was 7 of 13 for 102 yards, had the game-winning 2-yard touchdown dive in the fourth quarter and had a critical third-down completion for a first down on the previous possession when Iowa tied the game on a field goal. "It's definitely a lot of fun to get back out there," Petras said. "No one's goal is to be on the bench. So yeah, it felt good to be back out there." - AP College Football

Iowa managed just 156 total yards in its loss at Wisconsin, the Hawkeyes' fewest since they were held to 66 by the Badgers in 2017 and tied for fourth fewest since 2000. The Hawkeyes' combined 427 yards in their last two games are their fewest in back-to -back games since Wisconsin and Purdue held them to 324 in 2017. Iowa's 291.5 yards per game rank last in the Big Ten and 124th out of 130 FBS teams. - AP College Football

Spencer Petras threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Nico Ragaini to complete No. 3 Iowa's comeback from a two-touchdown deficit, No. 4 Penn State's offense did next to nothing after quarterback Sean Clifford was knocked out of the game and the Hawkeyes held on for a bruising 23-20 victory Saturday. The Hawkeyes (6-0, 3-0) took control of the Big Ten West with their 12th straight win and thrust themselves into the College Football Playoff conversation. Penn State (5-1, 2-1) lost for the first time in 10 gam es and headed back to Happy Valley with a list of injuries that could make its path through the rest of the season difficult. When Petras took a knee in victory formation to end the game, students and other fans poured out of their end zone seats t o celebrate. Bodies were packed together the entire width of the field from the south end zone to the 10-yard line on the other end. "It's a pretty special place when the lights go on and the sun goes down," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. The Hawkeyes' gr inding offense isn't built to play from behind, but it managed to come back in the biggest game at Kinnick Stadium since then-No. 1 Iowa beat then-No. 2 Michigan in 1985. Iowa won the field-position battle thanks to the work of punter Tory Taylor, who re peatedly pinned Penn State deep in its own end after Clifford went out of the game in the second quarter. - Iowa/AP College Football

Spencer Petras threw for three touchdowns and ran for two and No. 5 Iowa took advantage of seven Maryland turnovers in a 51-14 victory Friday night. The Hawkeyes (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) intercepted five of Taulia Tagovailoa's passes, and they outscored the Te rrapins 31-0 in the second quarter as Maryland completely unraveled. The Terps (4-1, 1-1) never recovered after losing standout receiver Dontay Demus to an apparent leg injury on a kickoff return early in the second.Iowa beat Iowa State earlier th is season thanks to a plus-four turnover margin on a day the Hawkeyes were badly outgained. The matchup with Maryland was an even more extreme version of that. The Terrapins turned the ball over five times in the first half and four times in the second q uarter. Tagovailoa had thrown only one interception all season — while leading the Big Ten in yards passing — but he was picked off on the Terrapins' second possession Friday in a sign of things to come. That turnover led to a field goal that opened the scoring, but Maryland responded sharply, driving 69 yards in eight plays and taking the lead on a 9-yard scoring pass from Tagovailoa to Chigoziem Okonkwo. - Iowa/AP College Football

Iowa made it through September undefeated with the remainder of the Big Ten schedule looming. But it wasn't easy for the No. 5 Hawkeyes to get to this point. They opened the season with wins against ranked teams Indiana and Iowa State. A home win over Ke nt State followed. Then came Saturday's game against Colorado State, and it turned out to be the biggest challenge so far for the Hawkeyes. Spencer Petras threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns as Iowa needed a second-half comeback to win 24-14.Th e Hawkeyes (4-0), who trailed at halftime for the first time this season, won their 10th consecutive game, the program's longest streak since winning 12 games to open the 2015 season. Iowa also has a 15-game nonconference winning streak, the longest curr ent streak in the nation. "I think our guys were trying today, and we had practiced well," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "But it just wasn't clicking for us." The Hawkeyes were pushed by the Rams (1-3), who led 14-7 at halftime. "We certainly got stresse d, which is going to help us," Ferentz said. Iowa rallied with touchdowns on back-to-back possessions that took a combined four plays in the third quarter. - Iowa/AP College Football

When junior quarterback Spencer Petras addressed the media this past spring, he said he didn't care what the fans thought, he's going to get better. "No offense to the fans, but I could (not) care less about what they have to say about our performance," Petras said in April. "I'm focused on improving and having a great spring." Like any young quarterback, he's under a microscope, but this year he has more time to prepare for his second season as the leader of Iowa's offense. "I will say his timing is be tter, his leadership is better, accuracy is better," junior wide receiver Tyrone Tracy said Tuesday. "Last year he kind of was timid, he really didn't command the field, but I feel like this year, he's definitely gaining the respect of his teammates. He' s one of the hardest workers, so I feel like that's another way he's going to gain a lot of respect."Tracy added Petras has been passing to him three to four times a week during the past three weeks of summer conditioning, and as the new leader of the wide receiving corps has focused his energy on strengthening that chemistry off the field. Part of that, senior wide receiver Nico Ragaini adds, is taking advantage of the communication they didn't have last offseason. "Sometimes routes don't look t he way he wants them to look and we talk about it," Ragaini said. "It helps just knowing what each other wants and how to get the ball." - The Gazette

A private coach who is working with Spencer Petras over the next week on the East Coast thinks Iowa's presumed starting quarterback is poised to take a big step forward this season for the Hawkeyes. "I see big things coming for him," Tony Racioppi said T hursday. Racioppi is in his eighth year as a quarterback guru at the TEST Football Academy in Martinsville, New Jersey - not far from the campus at Rutgers. A former Division III passing star at Rowan College, Racioppi also is a primary counselor at the famous Manning Passing Academy every summer and said he's had 25 of his quarterbacks sign in the NFL.One of those quarterbacks is three-year Iowa starter Nate Stanley, who Racioppi worked with ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft. Stanley's connection to R acioppi led to Petras' trip out East. Another half-dozen or so FBS quarterbacks are also being trained by Racioppi this week, as spring practices have wrapped up nationwide. And now hungry signal callers like Petras are soaking up supplemental training. In an interview with the Des Moines Register, Racioppi said he wanted to make clear that Petras' hiring him shouldn't be seen as a knock on the Iowa coaching staff. In fact, Racioppi said he and Iowa quarterbacks coach Ken O'Keefe are in regular contact. Racioppi also coaches a Class of 2023 quarterback, Marco Lainez, that Iowa has offered. "(Petras) is trying to find ways to make himself better," Racioppi said. "Coach O'Keefe lets me know what stuff he wants him to get better at, and that's what we'll do." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Spencer Petras has completed eight games as Iowa's starting quarterback, and it's still difficult to get a read on his ceiling. We do know that the Hawkeyes have won six of the eight games. We can say that Petras outplayed his counterparts in three of th em (Michigan State, Illinois and Wisconsin). But it's also true that Petras has yet to put together a complete game. He sometimes started strong and struggled late (particularly against Northwestern and Minnesota). The past two games, he was terrible ear ly but eventually found a rhythm. After the Week 2 loss to the Wildcats, which ended up deciding the Big Ten West title, Petras wasn't asked to do as much. And, within the framework of the offense, he avoided crippling mistakes, with only two inter ceptions and a pair of fumbles during Iowa's six-game winning streak. Petras has completed 140 of 245 passes (57.1%) for 1,569 yards and nine touchdowns. That's a 119 efficiency rating that puts him in the bottom half of Big Ten quarterbacks. It's also w hy you can expect an open competition at the quarterback spot next spring, with Alex Padilla and Deuce Hogan in the mix, and perhaps a transfer if the Hawkeyes really don't feel they have the answer at the most important position on the current roster. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Spencer Petras was part of Iowa football history Saturday, even though he kept downplaying his contribution. The Hawkeye quarterback had a modest statistical line - 18 completions in 28 pass attempts for 186 yards. He nearly threw a touchdown, but tight end Sam LaPorta was ruled down a foot shy of the end zone. He nearly threw an interception, but Penn State's Jaquan Brister couldn't hold on to a pass that was underthrown. What Petras did have was a 41-21 victory over the Nittany Lions, the first by a Hawkeye team in seven meetings. And he had the honor of being the quarterback who handed longtime Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz his 100th victory in Big Ten Conference play. "All week, we've been saying how much respect we have for this program. They're a great program, historic program," Petras said of Penn State, which fell to 0-5 for the first time. "This is special. No player on this team had ever beaten Penn State, and they're a good football team. It was hard all game and a great team win." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Spencer Petras completed 18 of 28 passes for 186 yards and ran for a touchdown to lead Iowa over Penn State 41-21 on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Mekhi Sargent and Tyler Goodson combined for 179 rushing yards and three touchdown for the Hawkeyes (3-2, 3-2 Big Ten), who won their third straight and snapped a six-game losing streak to Penn State (0-5, 0-5). Iowa led 31-7 midway through the third quarter before Sean Clifford replaced Will Levis at quarterback for Penn State. Clifford completed a pair of tou chdown passes for 96 yards in a 3:54 span that cut Iowa's lead to 10 with just over a quarter left.Levis went 13 of 16 for 106 yards, added 34 rushing yards and fumbled twice. Clifford was 13 of 22 with 174 yards and two interceptions for the Nitt any Lions, who fell to 0-5 for the first time in their 134-year history. A handful of chunk plays on Iowa's opening drive set up a 40-yard field goal from Keith Duncan that opened the scoring. Penn State took its first lead since the final minutes of its season opener when Keyvone Lee scored from 6 yards out on his team's next possession. Upon further review, Spencer Petras didn't really want to talk Tuesday about his debut as Iowa's starting quarterback. The sophomore spoke of the "need to be more consistent." "I did some good things," Petras said of his performance in the Hawkeyes' 24-2 0 loss at Purdue on Saturday. "I did some things that I wish I could do better, wish I could go back and change." And then Petras was on to Northwestern, saying his attention has shifted to Iowa's opponent in its home opener at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (ESPN). Petras had a bumpy beginning against Purdue, admitting later to having some nerves to work through. He completed only one of his first six pass attempts. But when he got into a rhythm in the second quarter, Iowa put up 17 points, including a 1-yard touc hdown run by Petras for the team's first points of the season. Petras completed 13 of 15 passes in that stretch. He finished 22-for-39 for 265 yards, the most by a Hawkeye quarterback in his first start since Jon Beutjer racked up 380 yards in 2000. - Io wa City Press-Citizen

Spencer Petras is QB1 for the Iowa Hawkeyes now, and, at least in his initial meeting with the media Tuesday, he's carrying himself accordingly. Petras was firm in his belief in the Iowa offense and in his ability to make plays, not excuses. He spoke wit h authority, knowing that there is no room for the timid under center in a college football game. But, mostly, Petras reiterated what is obvious for any first-year starter at quarterback: Nothing will be known about whether he is up to the challenge unti l Oct. 24, when the Hawkeyes open a delayed, abbreviated Big Ten Conference season at Purdue. "I'm extremely lucky. I feel really grateful just to be in the same room as a lot of these guys. It's an honor to go out and play with them," Petras said of a H awkeye offense that is skilled and experienced at every position except the one that matters most."It's my job to make sure this doesn't go to waste. We have a great team and a lot of talented guys. It's up to all of us. But it's up to me to execu te this offense well." Petras has the size (6-foot-5, 231 pounds), the high school accolades (50 touchdown passes against only two interceptions as a senior at Marin Catholic in northern California), and the trust of Iowa's coaching staff after he beat o ut the older Peyton Mansell to be Nate Stanley's backup last season. But the redshirt sophomore doesn't have the exposure to meaningful game action after completing 6-of-10 passes in mop-up duty a year ago. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

If you were building an NFL team, your top two positional priorities would be quarterback and defensive end. Unfortunately, those are (in my mind) the two biggest areas of uncertainty for the 2020 Hawkeyes. Spencer Petras is the least-experienced startin g QB in the Big Ten West, and there is no replacing A.J. Epenesa's dominance as an edge rusher. If those positions are average or worse, Iowa will have a tough time going .500. But there's a lot of internal hope that Petras, now in his third year on camp us, is the real deal. The red-headed California QB who broke Jared Goff's high school records couldn't have asked for a better situation. He'll be surrounded by an experienced offensive line and the best group of receivers of the Kirk Ferentz era. If Pet ras is an instant hit and Parker's defense can be a top-25 national unit (as it has been in six of the last seven years) … this team can consistently score 30-plus points and rule the Big Ten West for the first time since 2015. - Iowa City Press-Citize n
